Any1 has VR?
« on: January 05, 2017, 12:04 PM »
I see a lot of games on steam are being released that are VR.

Does anyone have experience with them? Own a VR-headset, or whatever it is that you need?
Considering to buy one?

Asking cause many of these games have interesting concepts that you don't see in 2D.
Wanna know if it's something worth checking into/getting.

I recommend to wait at least for Q4 2017 when vr market will grow fat, currently there is oculus and vive, both quite overpriced, once other big competitors release their headsets prices will drop and vive will release htc vive2 to save position in the market. The only thing worth buying in vr world  in case you already have ps4 currently is PS VR which is pretty cheap (399$ comparing to $600 oculus and $800 vive), as bonus you can connect ps vr headset to your PC (it'll emulate work of oculus)
Why not oculus or vive?
1. There is not much soft except some demos, you gotta wait as big devs only beginning to optimize their games for vr, as currently happening with asseto corsa or fallout4
2. Setting up vive vr room is pain in the ass. And oculus didnt even have that stuff with tracking in 360 or controllers (they just put xbox controller) like vive , until they released oculus touch (shit you have to buy in addition to your oculus rift, to get simillar expirience that you get from vive directly out of the box, which makes overall price even higher and setup even harder comparing to vive
3. price. 800$. We're not talking about shit like google cardboard now, which isnt really a "virtual reality" thing, it just lets you watch stuff in 360 degrees without tracking

talking about porn, the situation here is the same. people made some 360 porn videos, but you don't need a vive or oculus to watch it, 2$ google cardboard (or better alternative) is enough. Sure, It'll be the next level of porn comparing to experience you get from monitor, but its far away from real VR too. Future of VR porn - games, as they're the only thing that can use benefits of tracking, thing that makes VR so believable. That's it, "Summer Lesson" is currently the game with biggest sales on Playstation VR. What this game is.. is just dating simulator with anime girls in it

Yeah, unless money is not a big issue for you, I recommend to wait. VR, VR capable hardware will get cheaper and will have better library of games as time passes. While PSVR is cheap, I don't think it would be a that good investment considering limited hardware of PS4.

I am excited to see how VR will be. Get a wheels and pedals, put your headset and bam! You're racing in Le Mans. You don't have time or money to cruise the world? VR. What I wondering is what kind of motion platforms they'll make.

As much as I'm excited to experience VR, I can't help but think that it's gonna be like a new drug. Maybe the greatest one to escape reality. Hopefully there are more benefits than the inevitable side effects.
Due to massive misunderstandings: MonkeyIsland refers to an island not a monkey. I would be a monkey, if my name was IslandMonkey meaning a monkey who is or lives on an island. MonkeyIsland is an island which is related to monkeys. Also there's been a legend around saying MonkeyIsland is a game. So please, think of me as an island or a game.

The main thing that I do not like about VR is the fact that you're essentially alone while you are using VR gear. Even if you are in a room full of people, the moment you put that headset on with surround sound going into your ears, they might as well not even be there. It seems like it would be a lonely experience, at least at this current time. I miss the days of people all hanging out in someone's living room and playing local multiplayer games on a TV, or going head-to-head with someone at an arcade. One of my favorite things about watching television or movies is talking to people who are also watching it, and hearing their reactions... seeing people smile, hearing people laugh, seeing people cringe or jump... VR will never have that to offer. VR is definitely best for those who are alone, those who want to just experience something really immersive. I bet in a few years we will see stories on the internet of people dying from being in some VR world for too long, or people developing or worsening mental disorders.

While I have used VR before and think it is pretty kick ass from a gamer/nerd point of view, I also see it as a possible threat to humanity - quite literally.
