Title: ** Sony Game Reviews **
Post by: TheKomodo on April 14, 2011, 12:17 PM
Anyone who loves PS3, please feel free to write your own PS3 game reviews in this thread, please, keep the language clean if possible and try to give an unbiased and fair review.

I will add a review when I buy a game lol, I just got mine today and don't get paid until tomorrow, I think the 1st games I am going to buy will be Gran Turismo 5 and Little BIG Planet 1+2.

Thanks to HHC for the idea :)

These are the games I have:
Quote
2010 Fifa World Cup SA
Assassin's Creed II
Battlefield Company
Call of Duty 3
CMR Dirt 2
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
ModNation Racers
Pes 2008
Racedriver Grid
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction
Sonic's ultimate Genesis collection
Street Fighter IV
Uncharted: Drake's fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

I haven't bought any in a while though. I hope to purchase NHL '11 soon, but it's still 65 euro and by the time it drops to say 30 euro I'm afraid the stores have run out, gonna be a gamble  :-[

My fav games of the above:
Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty (short game, but it's nicer than the 1st episode), Racedriver Grid (just lay back and do a race, it's nice) and the Fifa official WC game (though I really miss the option to randomize the quali-groups).

I haven't really gotten into BF and CoD yet, played it like 3 times  :( And the Metal gear game is still untouched, even though it was one of the first I bought.. I really need to play more  :D

If you want more detailed info/review on a game I'd be glad to supply.

edit: GT5 is definitely on my get-one-day-list  :D

GTA IV (as you all may know...)

Red Dead Redemption

Gran Turismo 5

Worms - Anyway I deleted it... worthless compared to W:A!
(I think I still got a share so you could download it for free, guys)

Barely play RDR n GT5 cuz of GTA... although they're both awesome games I'd recommend you all

I played Among Thieves first and when I played Drake's Fortune I found it tediously repetitive. It's just a bunch of sequences with a whole bunch of enemies coming at you. Among Thieves is waaay more interesting, a very very good game. Im looking forward to the next part, though this desert theme seems a little less compelling than Southern Asia and Tibet.

Lol I was hoping to read some reviews not just what games we all have, cuz now I am jealous you got all these games, and HHC don't even play all his lol, and I got none  :'(
Title: Re: ** PS3 Game Reviews - By W:A Gamers **

You just need 2 or 3 games to keep you busy for a whole while Komo. Buy a new one when you finish one, that's my advice.

If I were you I'd really get Among Thieves though. It's an adventure game with shooting, puzzles and movement-challenges. All backed up with a great storyline, beautiful landscapes and captivating eastern mysticism.

The only bad thing of the game is that you want more of it once you've finished the campaign  8)

Only puzzle game like that I like is Zelda, apart from that, I like games you get straight into the action, FPS, Racing, or cool games like LBP :)

I was the same mate but, this isn't about a pad Vs mouse/kb war, it's about the game lol.

I do prefer M+KB but, this isn't hard to get used to at all, play it solid for a month and you'll get great at it.

Leroy it's true though, i've been following it on official blogs and official PS press release and other stuff for the last 8-9 days.

PSN got hacked, they took it down so they could protect it as much as possible, and upgrade their servers.

But the more I read about this hacker group, and stuff about Sony, the more I actually agree with what the hackers are doing.

I spent 9 solid hours following link by link stuff about this group Anonymous, and although most of what they do just seems egotistical, I actually respect some of the stuff they have done, they have SOME sense.

Although they have a war with Sony, I am dissapointed they are putting out somewhat claim to what went down, although not 100% admitting blame, they DO have a part to play in all this crap.

Hack Sony staff all they want, but when they start messing up other peoples enjoyment that's f@#!ed up, I bought my PS3 specifically in time to play it on my holiday with my mate IRL who is #2 officially on CoD:BO, I got 2 days worth, then got a massive "FU" when I tried to join again.

I am not worried that much however cuz I have a PC lol, but I can understand alot of these PSN addicts frustration because that would be like me going without internet altogether for 2 weeks...

But whatever, at least in the longrun, PSN will come out stronger with better security, and I am f@#!ing glad I didn't put credit card details etc on there like some people did.

I received an official email from Sony about what went down, I am sure you would have received it also? If not get in touch and I will share with you the details in there.

and stole all database.
well, this is what I was refering to :)
It's not certainly like all the database was stolen, some accounts have been compromised.
I've cancelled my cc, better safe than sorry ;) I'll only use pre-paid credit cards for net purchases if i'll have to...

I think so too, PSN will become stronger. XboxLive went offline for 3 weeks about 2 years ago and they built a better and stronger network.

Apart from this I wasn't too worried neither cause I enjoyed the easter a lot, but hell it's been more than a week and of course I miss some online gaming, hehe

I haven't got COD:BO yet but I'll order it once PSN comes back. Lots of friends got it aswell. Lol your mate is #2 overall or what? o0 well I never had a COD game but I'll own you anyway ;D I aim better with the analog joysticks, like a mouse on PC :P

I also received that e-mail, all 77million accounts did!

Lol I was like #1 Sniper on BF2 - Dragon Valley map, I was that good I beat hackers with aimbot cuz I stayed in crouch, popped up shot and back down within 0.5s cuz I had their aim already for the popup.

If I had a mouse and keyboard I'd f@#!ing own BO, my mate even said he was impressed how good I was never playing PS3 before coming on and going 18-31 against one of the best players in the world.

But, imo I suck, cuz I lost lol, yet, I done good enough, and had such a f@#!ing laugh on the headset I got hooked, I don't plan on getting addicted like BnG on WA, I just love the fun there with my mate :)

That's how it all started for me, I didn't plan either on getting addicted like W:A but finally ended up switching game :/ I barely played ps3 when I first bought it, took me like 6 months until I started playing less W:A, and finally became inactive :( I know you won't :P but it's always a good laugh, even more if you got a headset.

nice chatting with you, night mate :)

lol  :)

Anyway, I gave Baja a go:

First impression: pretty decent.
The graphics are rather disappointing (CMR3-ish). The steering is quite hard. With all the little bumps and the pre-made tracks on the road your car seems willing to go its own way. You're spending most effort trying to keep your car in control. Frustrating sometimes, it does add a little excitement to the race. On the straights the cars don't go equally hard, but the car happening to be in the best track can make the most speed and overtake others. Hence cars are changing positions all the time, which is pretty fun.

What bugs me the most is probably that you can't push away other cars. In a game like this a little bickering to keep your position adds to the fun, but instead, in Baja the cars tend to get stuck into eachother and it's pretty hard to get out of it again, in the meantime you're losing speed. So yeah.. it's probably better to stay out of touch with other drivers and drive safely (which is a shame IMO).

Another downside is the lack of music or environment sounds. You hear your own engine (and that of other cars nearby), but that's it.. Combined with an environment that is almost solely desert and there's times you feel 'under-stimulated'. It's certainly not like the Baja-events in Dirt2, where the cars seem bigger, the noise louder and the action tighter.

Nevertheless, what speaks for this game is the easy set-up. You can race for fun (or do hill climbs or time trials) or play in a career with a very straight-forward system (leagues of 3 or more races mostly). Simple, but it works for me. What this game really comes down to is simple, straight-forward racing. With wide tracks (you can take shortcuts too, as long as you dont leave the track for too long a time) combined with the easiness with which you overtake other drivers who take the wrong line(s), the races are close, challenging and fun.

6.8/10 ?

for a real review read: http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/driving/bajaedgeofcontrol/review.html  :)

Yeah.. it mentions the PS3 graphics looking sloppy compared to the XBox.. This is very true. YT-vid is from XBox too.

I've played it with my brothers avirex. Was fun yeah, though a little frustrating at time :) (OMFG YOU JUMPED ON MY HEAD SO I CULDNT JUMP SDFFSDF).

But yeah, GTFO of this thread  >:(

Btw I like the Tombraider series. The graphics and general atmosphere are a little less than in uncharted.. and the shooting is rather simple/dull (and all enemies look a like???). Anyway, the puzzles are a real challenge (they were too easy in uncharted imo) and it's quite nice to have an explorer game that isn't all about shooting, but nevertheless never ceases to capture your breath. The traps are quite monstrous.  ???

Tekken I still need to give a go.

Gran Turismo 5 - So far:

I literally just got this game it came through the door less than 20 minutes ago xD

I finished my game of Mortal Kombat (yes I bought that yesterday also, i'll make another review for this, well into it :)), and immediately loaded GT5, as always I watch the intro movies, this was freeking me out, it's like, a factory and basically like a S-F video of how cars are made, but the bloody piano music was freekin me out big time, not to mention I didn't know wtf I was lookin at upon first glance...

But after 2-3 minutes of what sounded like a blind kid playing "whack-a-mole" on a babysized piano, it totally changed, a short movie of different scenery with cars racing around, graphics were really pleasant to take in, with a pretty well placed song in the background and now it's made me even more excited to play the damn thing xD

Gonna play it now, i'll get back xD

I edited my CoD review by mistake, and pasted all this there lol, dratz xD

Destruction Derby was such an awesome game.  I'd forgotten about that.

I bet it looks REALLY shit now though.  That usually happens playing old games.  You remember them to be much prettier than they actually are.

Have fun though :)

Hmm... I have a pretty nice collection of Ps1 games. I didn't think you could use them on the PS3 though, I'll have to check that out.

You probably won't be able to save games though (?).

Or.. you ordered them from the PS3 store? If that's the case, have you ever tried original discs?

edit: Destruction Derby rocks indeed. 40 cars lined up in a circle ready to drive to one single point in the center.. it doesn't get much better than that  :D

This game has had ALOT of bad reviews, I expected bad reviews anyway, any game that takes 15 years to produce, will have an impossible amount of hype to live up to, so i've picked out a few nice "actual normal person/player" comments which were replies to "bad reviews":

Quote
I honestly think people went into this game with the complete wrong mindset. This isn't your Son's game... this is your Dad's game. Given some upgrading and freshness would of been great I flat out honestly never expected this game to be anything different than Duke Nukem 3D. If you were a true fan and kept up with it's progression, you would know that they largely kept what had already been created from previous production. Is the game goofy? Yes. Is the game less "action packed? Yes... but it's part of a classic. Think of it as that third sequel to that really weird Sci-fi movie you loved as a child.. the first was great.. the second was okay.. but you still went to see the third knowing very well it might suck.. simply because you didn't want to miss out on the story. This is what DNF is.

Quote
Typical of todays intellectually superior writers to pick on small things and ignoring the actual game. Pissing, picking up poop, and slapping alien created wall boobs are just EXTRAS, they doesn't add anything to the game at all other then activating some useless achievement points. If you don't like these extras, just ignore them and concentrate on the main game. The main game is a complete different beast all together - varying scenarios/maps each different from each other as a desert, dam, strip bar, a burger joint, Las Vegas, underground Duke cave, a kitchen, a Casino, an alien infested hive, Ghost town, Ocean depth, A giant machine whose revolving parts Duke must use to solve a puzzle and move forward etc. Such varied level design is definitely NOT seen in ANY modern FPS games. And add to that different level of pacing for the game involving solving environmental puzzles, slow and easy fight sequences, and then there is tough and intense combat situation, not to mention giant boss battles. The best thing with such huge variety of different levels and different pacing, and different combat scenarios, the game doesn't get boring. What more you want DNF kicks ass. I played the entire game myself to form my opinion - unlike some journalist who does it as a part of his job and desperately tries to show he has grown up beyond 12 by nitpicking on game extras missing the actual game completely! Shame!

Quote
I went into this game as if playing an old school game and came out happy. I been looking through reviews and have been dissapointed in that people seem to want a new age unique game, this is a very stupid idea to have for a sequel. Sequels are to repeat the concepts that worked the first time around, which Duke Nukem does.
I think too many reviewers these days are like food critics. If it is a simple steak they simply are not very interested... food does not have to have lovely garnish placed conveniently around it to be special, sometimes it is just a steak.

And my personal favourite:
Quote
I don't understand what all the hate is about. This game does not suck, it is a breath of fresh air from all the same repetitive military shooters that are released every month. I've grown tired of military crap after COD being milked like it has and our saving grace is going to be Battlefield? Screw that. DNF is fun, and it's what videogames used to be before people wanted games to be "art".

Now it's time for my review:

* Duke Nukem Forever - By TheKomodo *
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4124/4956987098_a6642d2778_z.jpg)

Duke Nukem is one of my favourite games ever, for the last 15 years, me and my mates have been playing Duke Nukem, our favourites being Duke Nukem: Time to Kill, and Duke Nukem 64, we used to play Multiplayer together for hours and hours on end, even now when my mate comes down to stay the weekend we sit and play Duke Nukem 3D and do a level each.

Duke is the one and only muscle-bound godlike and foul-mouthed, 1-man-army of FPS games, if Chuck Norris tried to roundhouse kick the Duke, the Duke would rip of his head and shit down his neck, whilst calmly puffing a cigar and reading a paper.

For anyone not brainwashed by the present media and bad criticism, Duke Nuke Forever is a classic Duke game, I am only 3 hours into the game, and I am loving it, you are sure to get a laugh from Dukes never-ending 1-liners such as when a EDF Soldier offers Duke some body armor, Duke replies: "Power armors for pussies..." There is also a fun amount of interactive element to the game, from checking yourself out in the mirror, playing slot machines, throwing hoops, to just throwing random things around, some of which will win "Trophies" (PS3 achievements).

Graphics: One of the things I was actually really surprised about, but in a good way, the graphics are not over the top, I personally don't like when one of a games selling points is next-generation graphics, detail and special effects, when it comes to gameplay i'm old fashioned and it's great to be reminded not to care for visual breakthroughs and instead focus on enjoying the game for it's gameplay and fun, it makes me feel like picking up where I left off, instead of thinking like a commercial sheep "Wow, the graphics are so cool!" I am thinking "Hahaha, what's he gonna say next?!" while running around trying to figure things out and tearing alien scum to pieces!

Weapons: I have only tried 5 different types of weapons so far I am already satisfied with the firepower, honestly, it's hilarious and such a rush to send a Pigcop flying backwards into walls/objects with the Shotgun! I can't wait to pick up and test out some new guns. The pipe bombs are deadly! Very effective against a group of Pigcops charging you, also great for tossing at Assault Troopers [Assault Troopers use jetpacks, and teleport around] and exploding in mid-air next to them.

Vehicles: Although I am sure there are plenty more vehicles to use, i've only used the remote control car so far, and it's a pretty nifty little buggar! For me vehicles is one of the neat advancements which previous Nukems didn't have, which adds a little more variety in the game, and of course fun!

Bosses: I'll keep this brief so there are no spoilers, however I will say i've done 2 bosses already, which is satisfying and although fairly straight forward to fight, you still need to stay alert, when you finally kill them "Duke-Style", you should get a laugh out it.

As a true Duke fan, i'm giving this: 8/10 rating, I haven't finished the game, but I have a feeling by the end of it, i'll be changing it to a personal 10.

Good review Komo  :)

I agree fully on your graphics vs gameplay stance. It looks sweet, but you can see each object is there to make the game more fun, rather than just there to fancy things up.
I'm not too sure if this is a game for me though. A rambo guy shooting monsters.. that's a little too Arnie for me  :D I might buy it once it hits platinum though, those are always worth the (few) $$.

I've got my PS1 collection here now btw.. 42 games in total (was quite a weight to carry for my bike  :D)

First game I gave a re-try was Destruction Derby 2. It's like Cueshark says.. at first glance the graphics look incredibly shitty (compared to what you're used to). But once your eyes have started to adjust to it it's perfectly fine. Gameplay-wise I don't know if there's a game on PS3 that compares to it.
When I was younger I really enjoyed just crashing the crap out of cars in the points race mode, but now I really enjoy the stock car races the most. It's always a challenge getting through the first 2 corners without getting caught up in the incredible havoc of crashing cars. Not to mention the 'Learner Driver'-yellow car that drives around the road like an Asian person who's had 10 beers.. He's a bitch to overtake when you're lapping him.  ???

All in all, I've really enjoyed myself playing it again. The carnage is simply too awesome.. it compensates by far for the heavy pixelized terrain.

Also nice to use the x and [] buttons for acceleration and brakes again, it's much less of a strain on the hands & shoulder.  :)

WRC - World Rally Championship
(http://sony.gamewereld.nl/Image.ashx?p=Shop%5cProducts%5c80068%5cwrc_fia_world_rally_championship_ps3-80068.jpg&w=115)

First impression:

I completed the first 2 challenges of the 'learn to drive' feature. And I have to say.. it was a challenge!

In many ways this game reminds me of the good old CMR2. The environment and surface of the tracks feel rather flat, as compared to the new generation Dirt games (and CMR4 for example). The background is the same as in CMR2: there's space at the sides of the track with some trees and stones on it, but further away there's a wall of trees you can't see through (or race through). This isn't much of a problem, you still feel you're driving in a real landscape, but yeah.. it's still 2d-ish like the old PS-games.
The surface of the road is a different matter. With Dirt (and recently Baja), I got used to roads being bumpy, with carved in tracks that push you in a certain direction and puddles of mud & water that grind you down.. In this game the road is just flat.. you can't feel the gravel, there's no inefficiences, there's no tracks, no nothing. It's like driving on asphalt with the colour of sand  ???
This doesn't really help getting you into rally mode, although it does give you quite a comfortable ride through lush fields and tree-infested hillsides (it's soothing  ;)).

The driving is another issue. It took me over 10 times to complete each of these two challenges. I had a lot of problem with understeer, oversteer... basically it was very sensitive. In my beloved CMR2 I remember pushing myself through corners, holding down the direction key to the point where I thought it was gonna break.. giving it all I had to set a faster time. In this game it feels like I'm driving on ice (even on the asphalt surface which is supposed to give a lot of grip).
The challenges were just 4 or 5 corners, but heck, even when I did beat the time I still didn't manage to stay on track the whole way. It is indeed like driving on ice.. you have to go real slow, hitting the brake and adjusting your path even in the midst of corners to keep you from spinning out. Quite a challenge (and not suitable for children who have no patience).
On the long run though, I guess this may not be a bad thing. I've always liked games with rather difficult steering. It's frustrating at first, but it keeps you challenged for a far longer time.

The biggest frustration so far is the teeny tiny letters in the menu. This game obviously was made for big-ass monitors like Komito's.. I wear glasses, but even I had to squeek my eyes to make out what it said. I don't see an option in the game either to make it look bigger.

All in all, I can see myself having fun with this game. However, it's far from a classic and definitely not comparable with the CMR Dirt series. 6.5/10.

Edit: just did challenge 3. Driving through a snowy landscape. Hmm. There's piles of snow at the sides of the road, but the strange thing is that when you hit them the car makes the same sound as it does when hitting a rock.. and what's worse, it does equal damage!! What the hell were they thinking? Snow as dense as stone?? The road's already narrow enough, 3 bumps against the sides and your car is ready for the African market  :'(
Oddly enough the grip is equally good as the asphalt track of last challenge  :-[

This game deserves a 5/10 at best. It looks pretty good and the official cars are sweet to race with, but things like the above.. that's just facepalm-worthy  :(

One giant continuous formation of rocks? That's a pretty bad idea to lay next to a road, even the swedes aren't that dumb.
The damage/impact is just the same for every object you hit. Whether it's a 'wall' of snow, rocks & brick walls or iron traffic barriers.  :-[

edit: sorry komito, accidently edited your post (lol). Gotta get used to this new button being there  :-[ I fixed the original post  ;)

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped one of one games I sucked at that I enjoyed a lot on. It's rather hard to find games that you suck at while enjoying at the same time. Worms Armageddon happens to be another one of those games. Great thing about this game is that this game offers huge replayability due to various modes and secrets in the game. (Score for this should be least 8.5/10) IT'S A HUGE PITY ANOTHER DEVELOPER TOOK CHARGE OF THIS FRANCHISE AND MADE MEDIOCORE GAMES!!!

I think The Wrath of Cortex is the best single player from the franchise, and best multiplayer are CTR and Bash, CTR because the timetrial mode required mastering every track, and Bash with so many cool modes you compete in. I rly like the concept of Bash that you don't need to play split screen when in multiplayer as all the players are in the same screen =D

Trailer for CTR

Here is a review of Bash

I played CTR, bash, bandicoot 1,2 and 3 and crash bandicoot titans (in ps2)

Crash bash is the best game if u play with multitap or 2 players, the 1 player mode is a bit boring

CTR is really nice in 1 player mode or multiplayer mode, new characters and new tracks to unlock, the classic crash bosses and a battle mode a bit boring too

And Crash bandicoot 3 is much better than 1 and 2, I really love escape of a dino or get a ride in a tiger... also if complete the game is easy for you, the game have other ending if u get your stats at 105% (collecting all gems, colour gems, crystals and time trial levels)

We could upload our records in CTR time trial... and also upload a video dancing like the guy on the crash bash review :)

Yeah Komo, I have that game too, nice  :)

The drifting tends to become a strain though. I mean, in some maps you can drift almost continuously.. bad for the shoulder  ;) it is cool to do though.

I'm playing Uncharted 3 atm. No revolutionary changes compared to Uncharted 2, but a whole new 'campaign' which is really all you need  :)
I was afraid at first it was only desert-theme, but well, I'm pretty far in the game and I haven't seen a real desert yet  :o Been in Europe, as well as in the Near East, but there too the landscapes are varied.
The fighting sequences kinda bore me, but the puzzles are great  :)

There aren't any puzzle in Uncharted... I mean, there are, but it's very easy.
Nothing to burst your head on a wall (The Longest Journey !). <.<

Anyway, Uncharted 2 & 3 platinium-ed. xP

For the moment, I'm on Dark Souls !
One of the best RPG I ever played: quite hard, a fun multiplayer (care to play alive ! Invasion on the way !) and a nice world.
The best thing of this game is for sure his difficulty, it's rare nowadays to find a game not finished in 3 hours (even if this one can be after finishing it once, but for sure not the first time !).
There are plenty of hidden secrets, some pretty unfoundable.
If you are a RPG player, I recommend you this game, it rocks !

If you don't want to get Spoiled, don't watch the trailer !

PS: This isn't a Sony game. xD

Recommended: MotoGP series.

I have tons of games that involve racing in cars (GT, Grid, F1, etc.), but this is the first game I've ever bought that involves motorcycles. Well, it's actually the first three games I buy in this genre, as I got this (for 30 euro):

It's a shame I never bought a game like this before as the racing kicks total ass. I've only done MotoGP13 so far, but I'm loving it!
It's got quite a few +'s compared to regular racing games, which makes it a shame motorcycle racing gets so little attention (outside maybe Spain?) from the gamer community. It certainly deserves it. I find the racing to be much more interesting than in any other game i've played.
This is cause of the fact the bikes are smaller (more room for overtaking+plenty of vehicles on track), but also cause there's different race mechanics involved (you slide through corners and after the corner's done you gotta lean over to the other side to prepare in time for the next turn). Not to mention the fact you got this huge beast of horsepower inbetween your legs that makes the racing even more intense.
It's just so much fun trying to slide through corners in a perfect trajectory so you can get out of it holding the gas peddle to FULL GAS and ROOAAARRRR on to the next straight line.  8)

There's also a nice FLOW you get into, just doing your laps  :)

So ae, if you're a race fan, but like me, never tried bike racing, give it a go  :)
