Title: Dj Max Trilogy
Post by: Cueshark on April 13, 2012, 12:48 AM
Hi Guys,

So I've been totally getting back into Dj Max for the last month.  Hence me not being active on the worms side of things.  I'll be back soon I think and mix between both games like I used to before the old Dj Max free server went down and Dj Max was seemingly lost forever.

I used to play Dj Max when it was a free game in 2006.  Then the server went down and I had no choice but to quit.

Dj Max Portable was released on the PSP.  This was a great replacement although nothing replaced the keyboard for precision of timing those notes and nailing those complicated sequences.

When Dj Max Trilogy came out on the pc it included songs from the original pc version and also the portable PSP versions.  This makes the song list absolutely incredible; 127 songs to play and unlock as you go.

Missions test you on your ability to string combos or maintain accuracy during a song and there are tonnes of unlockables including avatars, different notes and skins all of which help you build your fever bar quicker, increase your strength or raise your tech level which means it's easier to hit notes at 100%.

Each song you are given a rating at the end for your performance.

Ratings include a general % figure for your overall accuracy and also a letter rating which peaks at SSS.  You'll need to build up your fever bar by hitting 100% on enough notes to fill it up, then when you activate it you will get x2 for each note hit, fill it up again before it runs out and you can go to x3, then x4 and finally x5.  At each multiplier the speed of the notes will increase.

Notes falling quickly has the advantage of showing the patterns more clearly which can help you play the song by feel.

Overall this game is in my opinion one of the best games ever created.  It requires your feel for music, your gaming reflexes and timing, it rewards you with great new songs, and bonuses to make the experience very satisfying.

The other great thing about this game is the almost magical way in which you develop as a player.  At first you will start with a 4 key set.  Your first game on an easy song will require a deliberate and conscious communication from your brain to your fingers, a process which at first takes several seconds.

After some time you will no longer need your brain to think about the key positions.  It will all happen immediately and natural, it will be like reading music; the visual of the note chart.  Then you are IN THE ZONE.

This game is immersive, you find yourself buried deep within the music, obviously each button press is a note, a drum beat, a sustained string.  You are the song.

Songs are rated in difficulty from level 1 all the way to ridiculously hard level like 16s and 17s.

There are also 4 key, 5, 6, 7 and 8 key modes which are all awesome in their own way.  The depth and scope for this game is just awesome.

All I can say is developing a skill for this game is an almost zen like and spiritual experience.

Here's a video I made recently to demonstrate this game.
This is a level 10 song so I guess somewhere near the middle for difficulty.

I'll most likely add a couple of different songs to this thread over time if people are interested in the game.

See ya soon when I start playing worms a bit more and Dj Max a bit less :P

Pm me anyone who wants hooked up with Dj Max Trilogy.

I used to play this, someone from Worms linked me to it and a couple used to play the PC version.

I think you used to play this already when we were still in sCa, John. It's a sweet game, I liked it for quite a while, though it was frustrating at times. :D

What do you mean you can't play Ropa?

Recently added a new video of a harder song.  This game has one bad ass difficulty curve.  I will be coming back to worms soon.  Starting to miss it slightly :P

Doesn't seem better or harder than most Guitar Hero songs on Expert. Can you play it with the Guitar Hero controller?
Title: Re: Dj Max Trilogy
Post by: Desetroyah on May 02, 2012, 01:52 PM
its much much harder than expert songs on GH DiF.

I can say I could finish (not too well but still) Through Fire and Flames in GH3 and DJMax is a whole new level!

No wishy-washy, mediocrity reign, this game is long, it has a long long way from start to being "ok", it has a steep difficulty curve etc etc

I got it from a source that shan't-be-named *wink wink* and I'm now reaching the 7key pieces slowly.

Simply put: this game kicks your ass to Siberia and lets you limp back home on foot.
Title: Re: Dj Max Trilogy
Post by: Anubis on May 02, 2012, 02:13 PM
Actually I meant Amazing Difficulty not Expert, I play Frets on Fire which has an additional level.
Title: Re: Dj Max Trilogy
Post by: Cueshark on May 02, 2012, 05:56 PM
This is a game that would suit you Kai.  The top levels are seriously insane and I've encountered places where my tap speed lets me down.

I played frets of fire too and I played many other music\bemani games.  This is definitely the most skill intensive and satisfying to play.

Deset summed it up nicely and amusingly.  Glad you're having fun.

You unlocked 7 key already.  You must have been playing it a lot!  You got any SSS ratings yet?
Title: Re: Dj Max Trilogy
Post by: Anubis on May 02, 2012, 06:36 PM
I played it few years ago and the worst part of it is the music, I don't play stupid pop or rock songs on Frets on Fire. ^^
If I can't enjoy the music there is little sense to play a music-based game.

Ah true.  I really like the music, there are dozens of songs that I could literally never tire of.

In this version there are 127 songs covering all genres.  There are some very heavy songs but not many.

Maybe only 5% of the songs in Dj Max would appeal to you.....freak lol.

Deset summed it up nicely and amusingly.  Glad you're having fun.

You unlocked 7 key already.  You must have been playing it a lot!  You got any SSS ratings yet?

hola, I'm inactive from worms atm as well heh.

Yeh, I unlocked 8-key pieces but still working on my 6-key to make it good. Up to lvl 12 6-key is fine (rating C-A) but there are the 4-key pieces that kick your ass sometimes :P

This mostly because I am not yet used to the 4x speed in all pieces, its simply impossible for me to follow that and afterwards expect a 5x MULTIPLIER which increases the speed further during the song.

So far I got SSS in 20-or-so songs, mostly 4-key ones, some 5-key and 6-key ones. Seriously though, the Missions are damn cruel! I've done some lvl 15 but there are some lvl 4-7 that I cant do :P

Conclusion: no non-robotic life form can really complain about lack of challenge with this game heh. Also, some songs are indeed too koreo-japanesy for me. Some ridiculous duck songs for example :P I like some latin-type and metal though.

PS: Mr John sir, I got a few q's though. I am still running the game in Korean, which is fine (some amusing English to be found for sure), but it simply says nothing about the equipment and their stats (auto, tech, def, fever etc) and all I do is think, "more expensive = better" and thats about it! Kinda annoying so could you please post somethings about these mofos?  Everything I've learned about the game is by trial and error (took me a while to realise there are more than one streak multiplier levels and let alone how these things seem to vanish for no reason :P) but I feel these stats could make a huge difference since some new Notes, Equipment and Characters have given me a whole new level of precision now. Thanks ya :)

PS2: I saw in your video some "chords" you were hitting and I'm pretty sure you're tapping differently than me in the 5-key setup, e.g. you use both hands for the middle button. Either that, or you have much more  independent movement with your fingers than I do :) Bottom line, I use my right hand to press the middle button and naturally I think this reduces my speed with the remaining 2 fingers when tough combos etc are needed and I just wanna see how you do it since you're at least a few notches more advanced than me heh

PS3: you're keeping me off worms atm  :P

Title: Re: Dj Max Trilogy
Post by: Cueshark on May 14, 2012, 05:17 PM
Did you get the Dj Max Launcher that was in the folder I sent you?

With that you can change the game to English as well as change the resolution and turn off vertical sync although I'm sure that's off anyway because worms requires it.

Because I have a keylock keyboard my 5 key set up is E D (space) G H.  So the left hand side is in a kinda vertical line and the right hand side is a horizontal one.  I use W for the fever button for 5 key.  I haven't found anything else which I'm really comfortable with.  The original Dj Max never had the fever bar so it was all a bit weird at first.   I like having the space bar as the centre note for both 5 and 7 key.  For 4 key I use ED GH with space as my fever.  On 7 key I use SDF (space) JKL with X as my fever button but that is really annoying me as I get keylock conflicts.  8 key also produces these conflicts so I think I need a new keyboard!

There is no ingame explanation for the various stat increases offered by the various gears and notes etc.

Tech is the one you really wanna go for though because it increases your accuracy so you get more 100% notes.  I have a +5 tech gear, a +3 tech note and a +3 tech character which means I can mistime slightly but still be given 100% max on a note.

The fever bar fills up when you get 100% max notes and when it reaches the top you can activate x2,3,4 and 5.  As soon as you activate fever the bar will slowly disappear so you must fill it up quickly or else it will disappear and you'll have to start again.  Missing a single note during a fever will pretty much f@#! up your chance of keeping it going.  Getting some 90% and 80% notes will make the fever bar reduce quicker but you should still be able fill it up in time.

Getting +fever on your stats will help you fill the fever bar up quicker which gives you more room for error.

Getting 5x fever is essential for score based missions.  You really do get a massive score for keeping x5 for the majority of the song.

+auto means that you can completely miss a note but instead of losing your combo, you will just be given 1% for the note you missed and the combo will continue.  Get +8 auto means you can miss 8 notes during a song before the notes will count as actual misses and stop your combo.

Spec on your gear is just the size of the energy bar.

Defub is how much your gear's energy bar will replenish itself.

------------

Choosing the speed of the song is a tough one.  Obviously the notes start falling faster once you get up to x4 x5 so you might wanna start off a bit slower to accomodate for the speed increase.

You can also use F3 and F4 in game to speed up and slow down the notes.  You know when the very first note falls down to start your fever.  I use this to test the speed and then quickly press F3 or F4 so get the speed how I want it.

You can't change the speed using the F keys whilst you're in a fever but you can at any other time.

Hope this helps.  Any favorite songs so far?

Any songs that you unlock will appear in Stage mode.  Then once you play them in stage mode they will appear in free mode.

Any more questions then let me know man.

Oh and I've uploaded the whole unlock list for Dj Max Trilogy.  It is a great resource for finding out how to unlock all the songs.  And you're right about the missions.  Some of the low level ones are really evil and some of the harder ones are passable.

Now I've got tonnes of gears and stuff I can choose different gear for different missions.  Like ones which require combos I might wanna put on a gear with +auto.  Ones for score I might wanna do fever/tech.  It's quite cool to mix and match.

Here is the link to the unlock list.

aha, thanks for that list, although its not like I wouldn't keep on playing to see how many and what songs can be unlocked heh.

About your key setup: its f@#!ed xd its amazing you set such disparate key setup and so different from 4 to 5 to 6 etc.

I'm still trying to get better at the 6key setup and have neglected 7 and 8key atm.

Yeah, fair enough.  8 key took me quite a while to get the hang of.  Was pretty hard at first.

But now I'm as good as this guy.....NOT!

I played something like this before, but it's really boring for me compared to the original footpad DDR.

I know the stereotype that Koreans are just insane at computer games, but, you wanna know the really weird freaky thing about it?

American geeks - Fat useless ugly bastards.

British geeks - A mix of fat useless ugly bastards, and skinny average looking but annoying and boring spectacle wearing mother f@#!ers.

Korean geeks - Good looking, got the windswept jet black hair and the beautiful girls by their sides, they are f@#!ing heroes.

Where the hell did the rest of the world go, I shoulda been Korean :(

Sometimes life rocks xd

I started playing 4-key songs and I realised I could go up to 6x speed in many songs and 5x speed in most of them! then some gold discs started happening and yeh, you guessed it, I managed to use that speed for 6-key songs for the most part :D

Sad greek geek says: f@#! Yeah.

Post by: Cueshark on June 12, 2012, 12:36 PM
Ok, that's pretty damn impressive.  Level 7 gold disc!

Overtime your brain becomes able to translate larger groups of notes into finger presses.  Now you're able to speed up the notes you will be able to cope with more complicated patterns.  Keep it going man.

This game is an evolution.

*edit* Just busted out some good 6 key games.

I made a new YouTube account so I can separate Dj Max videos from my Worms stuff.  I have quite a few subscribers on the basis of the worms stuff so don't want them unsubscribing which they would if I put too many Dj Max videos up there :)

Although Google should have been more clear when I signed up for an account.  I needed to change my name to Mr D J Max in order to be able to see Dj Max as my username.  Must have clicked something wrong :)

When you practice the more difficult 6 7 and 8 key modes, going back to 4 key is really fun and easy which means you can take on the more difficult 4 key songs (and let me tell you some are f@#!ing hard).

I started off my new Dj Max YouTube channel with 4 MX songs.  MX and SC (super crazy) songs are the hardest type with multiple key presses in quick succession.  Rather like FR :P

Enjoy :)

Anyone who wants to get involved give me a shout :)

Leaving my pc on and I can actually minimise Dj Max and play worms fine.

So as long as we don't have a powercut I should get the unlock in several days time.

Youtube support playlists, people who have different shows and stuff usually make for each other playlist. On playlist mode after end of video it will automatically run the next video from playlist (more chance people will check all vids about same thing as result)

@ Masta
you can save playlist, so it will show up only new vids from it, I know what talking about cuz u2b sup3rPr0st4r in future remember? XD

My subscribers who added me because of my worms vids will see my Dj Max vids which I don't want.  I would rather keep them separate so the worms fans just get worms vids.

Otherwise they may unsubcribe thinking I have moved over to Dj Max.

That was my reasoning anyway.

Nice man.  What keys do you use for 7 key and for the fever as well?

;O

Now you'll be ready to go for the 8 key soon.

I went back to Dj Max after my million combo and my 6 key ability had gotten a little better.  Should hopefully be able to start doing some of the mega hard songs soon.  :) )
Title: Re: Dj Max Trilogy
Post by: Desetroyah on July 11, 2012, 10:41 AM
well, I use Shift+A+S+D for the left hand and J+K+L+/ for the right. I felt that pinkies should be lower than the rest of the fingers so that I minimise movement and feel comfy on the kb.

For 7key I use A+S+D for the left and the rest 4 J+K+L+/ for the right hand.

I always have fever on space bar so I hit it with the thumb which is naturally at around that height on the kb considering the other keys and my finger size :)

I'll keep on going with 7-key till I'm comfy as much as possible and then slowly start 8-key. Admittedly, I'm still not great with SC or even MX songs, even on 4-key. I think that's mostly a matter of speed still. I've increased the speed I use a lot but I still feel its inadequate when dealing with so many notes cramped in such a small space.

I have literally only touched 7-key but I tried a little of 6-key challenges last night and passed the -1 with only +1 auto and I only realised when I did it lol! (ofc I replayed songs along the way but after 30mins I was done :P)

I think before I try 6-key or less, I'll move to 8-key. It is time :D

Yeah cool.  It's tough at first.  You got the guide I sent you.   Nice one on passing those missions man.  Tough ones.

Nice score on Red Deset.  Is that 7 key or 5?

Here's a video of me playing Knowledge System 5Key on MX level.  Sorry about the low quality.  I was using my phone's front camera so I could adjust it properly.  Didn't realise it was only 480 res :<

Thought it would be interesting for people to see how crazy this game is when you're actually there :P

Another live vid but in 1080p this time.

Totally smashed my previous score on this song with a SSS rating :-)

You still playing 6 key Deset?

Ah, very good job buddy!

I just went on Dj Max as soon as I saw this post just to play it once quickly as a response heh.

I'm actually into 9-11 lvl 7key songs now so my 6-key sky-rocketed and will soon have some n stuff to show!

Atm I'm not really practicing individual songs so that I do them SSS, I play each song once and I'm constantly going through songs for variety purposes heh.

Btw, this song is extremely fun to play and the AA rating you can see was actually done yesterday whereupon I nearly shat my pants seeing how I can do this song all of a sudden so well (for me) :P

YOU HAVENT SEEN THE LAST OF ME, SIR. xd

Nice.  Yeah I find that practicing with more keys really helps play the lesser key modes.

I just hate using the fever key in 7 key.  It always key locks and f@#!s up my combo.  With 6 key there is no issues....also with 8 key.  5 and 7 key is hard for me just for that reason with the fever button :(

Look forward to seeing some screenies.
