If yes or if no, why? I'm just curious.

I've voted no, but answering this from the perspective of being "materialistic" not being money orientated and just having hordes of material things.

I don't buy stuff to show off wealth or go crazy for "the latest models/fashion"... I buy things that are useful and that are required for my needs so don't consider myself materialistic at all. I buy cheap clothes(apart from boots, I buy good boots for walking), don't buy jewellery or other luxury goods, don't even have a car and try to walk everywhere that's possible. I haven't even been on a holiday for about 20 years.

I also have a few other bits and bobs that are technically "technology" but that's because I'm a nerd and it's mostly related to gaming, sports or music and those are hobbies I consider intellectual and/or fitness based.

I've spent most of my money on my PC and that's because I do music production, if it wasn't for music I'd probably have a much more basic gaming PC.

I voted no, but I almost voted yes.

Yes because I do like my stuff, for example some clothes or even my temporary lighter. I want to buy a new car for myself someday, a new computer, a new smartphone, a microscope, a new house, etc. I care about these things, and I have emotional feelings with some of the stuff I have.

However, if for some reason a disaster happens in my life, for example, the flood that recently happened in good part of the state Rio Grande do Sul this year: I would accept that I lost a lot of stuff I worked hard for and that I feel emotional bonds for them that now are lost. Life is more important and material things can be acquired again. What matters is family, friends, and health. Material things are important to have quality of life. The basic stuff like a refrigerator, or a shower. The rest is just confort and luxury. WA is luxury.

I would prefer to live in a society that the public and collective transport system works well and is free. I would prefer to live in a society that there are no private properties, only public stuff of decent quality. Only some individual particular things maybe could be temporarily "private", like an area that you can say: hey this is MY bedroom, this is my territory, I need my privacy, because I am a living being and I need my own sanity.

yes, bcos material things surround me wherever I am. and if I can choose my surrounding, I prefer to see and experience gooder things around me. it makes me happier and boosts my confidence when I know I have good-looking reliable things in use

i voted no, material things provide quick dopamine hit then it fades.  they never make you happy long term.  I like nice shit, but its way low on my list of things that matter to me.  I could lose all of it tomorrow and it wouldn't devastate me because I put low emphasis on it.

Just finished building a new PC.. 1100€ about to spend and not even in need of a new rig. I think my gtx 1070ti was pretty sufficient for handling W:A. Even with vsyncs off  :D

Hope this dopamine, Walrus was talking about, will last a tad bit longer than just a "hit".

ik poll is over, but i keep coming back to this thread, so here goes my answer. i'd vote yes, but it's more complicated.

if it's something i don't have, it's either a combination of either not being able to use them, or not being useful to me, or i likely don't have it yet and i'd like to, or I don't know if that exists. however, the definition of something being "useful" to me is a bit broad. if your intent was talking about buying props for the sole sake of them being props and holding some monetary value X years from now, then im afraid you're barking up the wrong class.

i have a humble glass cabinet in my room that's full of trophies, plushies, wastelands of old keyboards, there's even 1 lego set in there, to commemorate some meaningful event i've been through, to remind myself of my achievements. thing is, i chose myself which of these items are there. these things hold more sentimental value to me, than monetary value. does that count as "material things"? not sure.

otherwise, of physical things, i guess there's a computer, which is something i use every day, but im not sure if that counts as something "materialistic". you mean something you can flex with on social media because it's "f@#! you" levels of expensive?

Charles, I wouldn't count that stuff as materialistic.

If materialistic means we own "stuff" then everyone in the world is materialistic lol.

I've always known materialistic to be the definition for people who value the price and luxury of owning objectively expensive material posessions over meaningful and useful posessions.

Like people who buy expensive jewellery, expensive clothes, ornaments, vehicles, houses, etc... People who have excess like 3-4 or more cars, multiple sets of golf clubs, trainers that they never wear etc... |The kinds of things that tell other people "I have lots of money, look what I can buy".

I'd guess most of the people here who voted yes probably aren't really materialistic in the end.

I voted no and here is why.

I don't care for expensive brands and luxury Items because it means nothing to me. What matters are my interests and where my passion lies. I could happily buy myself an expensive gaming computer or high end OLED TV but not out of Immediate necessity but because of intrinsic value. I personally do not like to show off these things but I wouldn't mind to share what I have to someone I know.

I personally don't care if someone owns expensive homes, rides luxury cars, and wear flashy clothes. Why? Because it means nothing to me. Materials are things promoted through society, ads, and media. It is all a mental thing Imo. It is also toxic and promotes the idea of Inequality.

It's the content of the character that matters at the end of the day, and how well you are able to control yourself. Sadly in Norway, a lot of kids age 12+ gets latest/expensive iPhones and Samsung phones in order to fit in.
