I don't really think there's much to congratulate about a birthday, the person just reached a milestone in getting older. ^^ #my2cents

Well, these days it isn't as significant, but it used to be considered a huge accomplishment considering how young people used to die before better living and medicine and cures for stuff etc.

It's pretty much just tradition, and a good excuse to get drunk
