As far as I know, physiologically your reaction cannot be faster than 140 ms! Considering that it takes around 10-30 ms to press the mouse button, it sums up to 170 ms, which seems legit. So definitely those top guys were cheating somehow, or they accustomed to the average time until green light shows up. And false start is not punished, no penalty for "Too soon" click which makes it even eaiser to cheat (that would be some kind of an anticipation test, not reaction test!) :P
TIP: try to pressure down the button a little bit before clicking and make the finger more stiff, this will give you some boost in time about 10-30 ms

alright, so
i did the test on samsung ue40eh6037 which have response time of 2ms, and mouse called a4tech x5-70 with 16,7ms response, my length of path of the nerve impulse from the brain to the finger is 1,4m, the av.speed of the nerve fibers is 65m/sec, so it takes 2,15ms + ~25ms to press the buttom
dont forget that im also in two meters away from the TV, and the speed of light is 299792458 m/s, which takes it 6,76^-7ms to get to my eyes
overall it gives me 35,850000676ms of time to get thing done, but it still doesnt explain why the f@#! i have such a bad reaction

5 years later, did this test again, my times have improved. Since I stopped playing W:A for the most part and shifted more towards FPS games. Did 3x the reaction test and achieved:
167ms (average of 5 tries)
154ms (average of 5 tries)
168ms (average of 5 tries)
See you in 2025, gonna be interesting when my reaction time declines, I am 34 years now.

Anything below 100ms is inhuman anyway (according to science), I had a couple of "prediction" clicks as well which I disregarded and started the test again. If your average is like 200 and you get one out of 20 with 50ms it's very likely a prediction click/miss-click.
"The fastest possible conscious human reactions are around 0.15 s, but most are around 0.2 s. Unconscious, or reflex, actions are much faster, around 0.08 s because the signal doesn't have to go via the brain. Reflex actions occur in response to danger, for example moving your hand away from something hot or blinking when something moves quickly towards your eyes."

Also disproves all these studies that claim as we age reaction time gets slower, they always claim 25years is peak reaction time, it's bullshit. Reaction time can be trained. It's like a muscle. Sure when you get too old even a body builder will lose muscle mass, but it's not like you can't train your body to be quick or strong, even as old f@#!. Some is genetics, rest is training. Gaming is excellent reacting time training.
As we grow older most just spend less and less time on their body performance, lots don't care anymore. Just work, f@#! and sleep. Always hated the thought of just living and not striving to perform good (physically/mentally). I wanna be a 70yo that outplays a 16yo in roping/FPS game. XD

Not that big, these numbers are worst case scenario, aka: The screen refreshed just before green light appears and you have to wait x ms to actually see the light.
60Hz monitor: 16.67ms
144Hz monitor: 6.94ms
240Hz monitor: 4.17ms
360Hz monitor: 2.78ms
So worst case is 14ms later if you compare 60hz with 360hz screen. Most people use 144hz screens, so that shrinks the difference even further, it's just 10ms worse than a 60hz screen.
My times are on 60hz.
What static experienced is the mouse polling rate. If it's an old mouse you have to set it manually in a registry file, most old mouse do support 1000hz polling tho. New mouse like latest logitech have the option in their settings. Mine is set to 1000hz.

I have 2 friends on Discord and both of them did like 120-130 (screenshot below), one is asian (so I'm not surprised xD), but I wouldn't call another dude an exceptional player. All I know is both of them have much more expensive setup than mine, but I don't think I can reach 130 anyways, although sometimes I click at 150-160.

I just tried it for a minute or so and my average was about 235 ms, but I'm also left-handed and my mouse is a piece of shit. It could probably be a bit lower but I don't care. I don't play any quick twitch types of games. I'm also using a 1080p TV as a computer monitor.

I am 38yo old now, still lightning fast reaction time. Even had a couple 160ish and one 150ish in, but average is 170.
Will do this every couple years until I am dead or this site dies. To see my progress over the years.

I used a 60hz screen for the test, which can add up to 16ms of reaction time since the screen refreshes only 60 times per second. I did the test on a 144hz screen and got consistent 160ms there. screen refresh-rate matters A LOT in reaction time tests. So, use the highest possible Hz screen you can find! :D
Edit: I actually posted the technical stuff years ago:
60Hz monitor: 16.67ms
144Hz monitor: 6.94ms
240Hz monitor: 4.17ms
360Hz monitor: 2.78ms
Basically, if you did the test on 60Hz you can simply remove ~10ms from your result on average. And maybe another 1-2ms from the mouse signal if you have a crappy one since they also have a polling rate (similar to Hz). Mine has 1000Hz polling, so it should be near 0ms. (but not 0)

It's surprising it makes such a difference, maybe my roping would get faster if I played on an actually high refresh rate monitor? Although my playing usually suffers when I switch from my 20 year old clunker

im guessing the actuation of a mouse vs whatever the latency of a touchpad on iPhone is made the difference, monitor is probably not that much, 10-15 ms maybe as referenced by Anubis earlier in this thread

CRT screens are actually performing extremely well in terms of refresh-rates and input lag especially for lower resolutions. So if you "upgraded" to a modern LCD it would probably feel worse. When I switched from my old CRT to a high quality EIZO TFT screen back in 2010 roping felt significant worse, but since at the time I already lost interest in W:A it didn't matter that much to me. Vintage doesn't always mean worse/outdated, most often it means more durable and reliable.
Some random facts:
- They break sample and hold blur by having a blanking period between each frame. This improves motion clarity. Black frame insertion and backlight strobing are technologies that try to do this effect in other ways on LCD and OLED displays.
- They have near instant response times like OLED does.
- Due to the way the phosphors work can have a pleasing effect on the image quality at the expense of some sharpness. So old low res games look pretty great on CRTs.
If I were to take W:A/Roping serious again I would buy me a 100$ IBM Model M (and the Wooting for testing) from ebay and an old high quality CRT screen. :)

Seriously though, I've got both monitors hooked up, the monitor on left is maximum 60hz(It's a 4K DELL), my main one is 165hz, my secondary PC has a 240hz monitor but I couldn't be bothered testing that.
Yeah, I'd go insane after 10 minutes mate let alone 8 hours LOL.
It doesn't surprise me that well known physical scheme players are generally faster. I am however very surprised TheWalrus was so slow, that's BS, he's a damn fast roper when he wants to be so not sure how that happened!

On my 144hz montor im 200ms, in the grand scheme of things that really isn't much different for roping imo. Most of roping to me is anticipatory anyways, reaction time is probably features more prominently in RTS or FPS.

But when roping every single button press is a reaction to the previous button press with the constant effort of adapting to whatever map you're playing on.
I'd say it's more powerful in roping than FPS because it happens more in roping. As in more times per second/minute.
Of course it depends what level you're playing at, S tier players at anything where reactions are priority are going to take advantage of being faster than everyone else.
