Other worms games / Some questions about map files, colors etc

Hello everyone, thanks for maintaining this great website. I have some questions in regard to making custom maps in worms armageddon (PC, playing in windows 10).
I'm playing the steam version, downgraded to 3.7.2.1.

This guide http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=382345353 says you can add up to 64 colors. Back in highschool, I remember being able to make maps with 256 colors, but then again I was playing worms world party then, maybe I am mistaken or WWP had a better quality of maps? Please elucidate me about that.

Moreover, I found some great looking maps while searching this website. For instance, this one right here: https://www.tus-wa.com/maps/map-15503/

This looks to great to be 64 colors only. Is it really? Or is there some kind of bypass to that rule?
Basically I am a bit confused by the rules people say have to be followed in order for the game to accept an image as a map.

1) What type of image file types are acceptable to the game?
2) What are the limitations in regard to colors when I save on the aforementioned images?
3) How do I know where to make those limits apply? For example, back in 2003 I would open up a big image that used to be a map, so that I would have the correct resolution. Then I'd make my map and save as '256 color' setting on windows paint.
Since I'm using GIMP now too(more options), what kind of way is there to know what to save so that the game will accept it? Apart from it being divisible by 8, I'm asking more in terms of image quality.
