dS / Mapmaking guide for Darts
October 29, 2015, 11:42 AM
Introduction

Welcome to the dS guide for making a good Darts map :)

The first maps to be made had some issues that we've managed to avoid over the years with practise and experience in creating maps, we want to share this knowledge to help players create better maps.

Basics on making a map for Darts

Usually we try and stick to standard map sizes which you can find here

Any size is fine, just remember that huge maps can have a long loading time for people with slow connections.

We now have "Multimaps" which are maps with more than 1 throw:

Super Mario Darts World (18in1)
Sonic the Hedgehog - Green Hill Zone (3in1)
Sonic the Hedgehog - Scrap Brain Zone (3in1)
Sonic the Hedgehog - Star Light Zone (3in1)
Sonic the Hedgehog - Labyrinth (3in1)
Sonic the Hedgehog - Spring Yard Zone (3in1)
Sonic the Hedgehog - Special Zone (3in1)
Sonic the Hedgehog - Marble Zone (3in1)
The Legend of Zelda (3in1)
Shiny World (18in1)

Guidelines & competitive requirements

Maps must have a Start platform within reach to the area you connect rope to.

It must be obvious where you connect rope to and where you bounce from, if for any reason it isn't, make sure you add a "how to" in the map description when you publish it.

If the map has any unique rules, make sure to add them to the map description when you publish, if you think it's complicated, you can always add a .GIF animation. Also, you could always write the rules in the map itself.

Make sure the distance between the spikes separating scores on any target is enough to prevent worms rolling from 1 score to another:

Bad example

^^ You can test your map before publishing it to make sure this doesn't happen.

Good example

^^ You can test your map before publishing it to make sure this does happen.

The point system on each map must be carefully thought out so it's fair for everyone and so players can do the math quickly & easily.

The target platform must be carefully designed to eliminate any luck possible:

A bad example:

A good example:

It isn't required but it helps to have anti-plop barriers on start platforms(APB for short):

Tried & tested swings

Examples of reliable swings that can be used:

The Classic:

The Pixel:

The Bank:

The 1st Bounce:

The Transfer:

The Arch:

The Ride:

The Rattle:

The Swoosh:

The Pump:

Advice, tricks & tips

Target measurement technique:

Try using the following pattern to help make perfect target cups:

^^ There is a single pixel in the middle, with 1 pixel width gap either side, then followed by rows of 5 pixel width adding up to 20 rows each side.

Using this method you can make each target cup exactly the same distance from each other.

Try not to use sprites/images with transparent image that has way too many colours in it, the best maps tend to have the least amount of colours!

If you are copying/pasting images from the internet, make sure to clean around the edges, sometimes you are left with messy pixels around the images which looks horrible on some of the WA backgrounds.

Try not to make start platforms which force players to jump from to connect rope, it can be frustrating and only makes things more complicated.

Try to make sure players have the freedom to stretch the rope out to it's maximum length when throwing their worm, it gives them a better choice of throwing style.

When exporting maps make sure to export as ".PNG", make sure you decrease the colours to a maximum of 113 for WA, the backgrounds in WA look best with 64 colours or less.

When using "Decrease Color Depth" in Paint Shop Pro, I personally use the following settings:

Good programs to use

Paint Shop Pro
Photoshop

IF YOU HAVE ANY GOOD SUGGESTIONS OR IDEAS PLEASE SEND A PM TO "KOMITO" OR "HURZ" AND WE WILL CONSIDER ADDING THEM TO THIS GUIDE - THANKS!

General discussion / Anyone have TonY RR Tilesets?
October 11, 2015, 12:24 PM
Does anyone remember the RR Tilesets(Sprites) that TonY made for people to create their own RR maps?

I lost my copies of them, I need them for some maps I have planned.

RR Tileset Cyan

RR Tileset Blue

RR Tileset Tan

If anyone has even one of these, would be greatly appreciated!

You can find the general rules of Darts here.

You must treat other players with respect, no mocking/insulting other players or you will be banned.

How dS Playoff Tournaments work:

Each week the dS community will host a Darts Tournament in #RopersHeaven.

The top 8 players of each Tournament will receive points for their finishing positions which will be saved in our dSPT Standings thread.

The results of each Tournament will be posted in our dSPT Results thread.

After 12 weeks(1 Season) the top 4 players in the dSPT Standings will enter into our Playoffs for a chance to win some awesome custom prizes!

Each Tournament will be hosted on a Saturday with Signups starting around 6pm GMT.

We hope to have as many players as possible but we will always start with 4+ players even if it means having to do a manual Tournament.

Seeing as the prizes for each Season are different and unique we will announce what the prizes are as soon as they have been decided / ordered.

The prize value each Season will be worth around £75 - £100, possibly more.

dS Playoff Tournaments - Playoffs:

At the end of the Season, the top 4 players will enter the Playoffs.

1st Vs 4th / 2nd Vs 3rd.

Semi Finals will be played Bo9 / Final and Bronze will be played Bo11.

There will be a 3 week deadline for each stage, more time will only be given in tragic circumstances, for example, bereavement.

There will be no waiting for people on holiday / having exams etc, it's your responsibility to know you have time to commit to this event.

And remember - You gotta be in it, to win it!

2nd - Komito & Hurz / 620 / Download game
3rd - MarianRV & spleen17 / 590 / Download game

Download "Chrono Darts" map here.

Download Darts scheme here.

Challenge rules & guidelines:

Any 2 players can team up to get the highest score with 16 worms total(8 worms each).

Any 2 players who team up will play online together, gather their best score & submit it.

You can team up & submit records with various players, e.g., "A"+"B" can submit together / "A"+"C" can submit together / "B"+"C+ can submit together.

You can teleport your worms back to the start and begin again at any point, as long as you throw 16 worms consecutively.

You will not receive extra points if you finish in multiple positions, you will only score the points of your highest position.

You may however receive multiple medals as long as you achieved them with different players.

Reply to this thread and attach the game with your team record.

The team who gets the most points in the end of the challenge will be #1.

This challenge will expire on Saturday 5th September 2015 between 8am & 8pm, and the next challenge will begin.

General rules & guidelines for Darts:

Don't forget to enable Racing Stuff before playing the challenge. Type /rs in game lobby to enable it.

Teleport all worms on the start platform.

Activate low gravity by selecting it from the weapons menu or by pressing the console key (under escape button).

Select rope by selecting it from the weapons menu or by pressing F8.

Use the arrow keys to maneuvre the rope and build momentum, then release the worm and fly with drill towards the darts board by pressing enter.

After each throw, add up your score within the game chat by using the "/me" function, e.g., "/me 20"

The score of a drilled worm still counts.

To the victor, the spoils!

Special rules for the map:

Place worms at the top of the Epoch (spaceship).

Attach rope to Nu (blue thing).

Fly over Magus' castle (the castle).

Throw does not count if you touch the castle.

If you get 400 points you defeat Lavos and save the world. Otherwise all of humanity is doomed. Gl + Hf.

Here's an example GIF:

Score - 550
Approval - Waiting*

*A dS admin will modify the post from "Approval - Waiting" to "Approval - Approved" once successfully checked.

If the replays score is different from the score wrote down by the submitting players, a dS admin will correct it automatically.

If there are any other problems with the replay, a dS admin will contact the submitting players through a PM on TuS.

If a player throws a perfect game, but the total score for the team fails to beat any record, they can still submit their score to get the "Perfect Game" points and medal, an example:

Name - Triad
Score - Perfect Game
Approval - Waiting
