I'm in the beta but can't play until like June because I'm moving to a different city and don't have internet now. D:

I'm gonna be really active starting June though, I wanna have a proper team and play tournaments etc. I'm regularly playing DotA vs AI too to hone my lasthitting skills. xD

Well it depends, you need some luck if you dont have connections or dont want to simply buy it from someone. They are giving away a lot of the keys weekly, though.

Why do people play LoL when they got a DotA 2 beta key is something I don't get into my head. :P

This weekend is TERA Open Beta, me and my friend are gonna play it. Anyone wanna jump in?
Husk, I am in MoP Beta if you wanna play some Instances on the EU Beta server.
Ropa, I am sure you got access to D3, let's play 1 play-through to the skeleton king before beta closes in 2 weeks.
Guild Wars 2 Beta is next weekend, but also Risen 2 release day which my mate pre-ordered. :)

On-Topic: I would be interested in a dota2 key, I liked Heroes of Newerth but LoL sucks because of the panda media booster. :P

Only MSN, tell me if you want me to add you, Have got dark and ropa, that's it. xD

Pando Media Booster is only in their website so you can resume the download if it fails. You can get LoL from a torrent and you won't see Pando anywhere.

I can get you a dota2 key I think, but only if you play.

What about a play-through in D3 Beta? :P
What you mean if I play, is there a preset value of hours I have to play to be eligible? :D
No sense in getting used to LoL when Dota2 is on the way, it's like getting used to Path of Exile if D3 is around the corner. And the gameplay I know from HoN which is known to be more elite than LoL anyway. ^^

My d3 key is rented to some dude for fg

You can't compare Path of Exile and D3 to LoL and Dota2. LoL and Dota2 will actually compete face to face for the same market, whilst Path of Exile sucks like Titan Quest. Riot is very good at selling. Very good and very dirty. Dota guys don't have the same business ferocity of Riotgames who are basically the most promising gaming company of this decade (based on growth rate)

Damnit, get it back. :( But you will get D3? Nevermind it's a rhetorical question. :D

I tried playing LoL, in fact before I tried HoN I wanted to play LoL several times, even before they released the panda media booster. It seems like whenever I tried to play their game either the server was down for maintenance, or later on the panda media booster gave me some trouble. So yeah, I am pretty much done with trying to play LoL. Btw, I am not the only one that had difficulties to play LoL, on totally different machines and ISP.
Then I head over to HoN, never had any major downtime, at least not when I wanted to play. Dota2 is in beta already and I already have HoN experience and don't think LoL can offer anything new other than different heroes and the domination mode which doesn't really interest me.

Title: Re: dota2
Post by: Abnaxus on July 23, 2012, 09:40 AM
Lol, how can you say so ?!

Dota heroes and items are so much better.
They really deserve their name of "heroes" in Dota, not in LoL.
All heroes are goddamn cheated, so that's balanced.

And Dota is for pro gamer, you're not allowed to do mistakes.
The only bad point of Dota is that last hits are goddamn hard to do (depending on heroes for sure, but still).

Yeah, last hitting is hard when you start with boots.  :-*

Being an experienced and semi-decent lol player (~1600elo s2) and a total dota2 newb (roughly 30 games so far), I find the depth of it and a meta that is not set in stone strongly appealing. What I dislike so far is the matchmaking system and the overwhelming russian community, but it's still in the beta afterall.
Title: Re: dota2
Post by: Aerox on July 23, 2012, 10:48 AM

Conclude once again please

What does a specific event have to do with anything? LoL is the most streamed game ever, visit any big streamer websites and check their stats. Simple as.

And I'll conclude again: after playing both games a lot, I prefer LoL. LoL isn't limited by a stupid set of rules that only exist because warcraft 3 was such a limited game, Dota goes out of their way to maintain those limitations, LoL doesn't care and thus the game is more polished in every single way.

The Dota Matchmaking is perfect, the thing is, since it's a Beta and there are few players, you rarely find games.
At least they do something about trolls/leavers, not like LoL.

And what limits are you talking about Ropa ? Give examples please.

And btw, LoL attracted every guys, not only players.
I saw people calling others "no-life" playing LoL. I mean, some people started playing computer games when they found LoL.
Plus Riot sucks: all they want is money. They don't care about player experience.

LoL is avaible for everyone and easier. DotA is not released yet and (afaik) it wont be officialy released this year. Theres still a lot to implement. So number of players (that is also streams/watchers) is no argument at this moment. + more or less what Abnaxus said

And I'll conclude again: after playing both games a lot, I prefer LoL. What set of rules? If you mean all those "hidden" rules that arent visible on first look, then yes, at this moment its up to players to dig playdota.com / whatever to learn deeper mechanics. As for limited things by WC3 engine, im not sure which ones, non stackable orb-effects? Its all balance, even if it was a wc3 limit, Blizzard did it for the good reason. If theres some more please tell me, i cant remember anything that makes no sense. + you didnt play dota2 alot

Yeah but, DOTA "clones" you think would at least copy the core mechanics that actually made the game what it was.  This is just my opinion, props for trying to add different mechanics but it did not grab my attention at all.

Less than 2 months left for The International 2014 (http://www.dota2.com/international/announcement/) to kick in.

Tickets for live event at Key Arena in Seattle were sold out in under 10min.
Prizepool tracker: http://dota2.cyborgmatt.com/prizetracker/international2014
Looks like it speeded up again. With this tempo and still so much time until the event, soon it will be bigger than UEFA Euro League and most likely the FedEx Cup. Quite possible to beat even The World Series and Superbowl as Compedium started to fund prize pool just 19 days ago, raising it by over 6,000,000 as of today. The hype.

Easily the tournament with the biggest prize pool ever. I'm so hyped for this shit. :D Especially after my trip to ESL One 10 days ago, to Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt, home stadium of Eintracht Frankfurt. It was huge (12.500+ attendees per day) and a lot of fun. Got to meet ChuaN, Dendi and some more. Will definitely visit again if there will be a second edition in Frankfurt.

I wish e-sports was in a point where this was a fair comparison. It isn't.

Dishing out 6 millions to the winner might seem like a lot of money. It's a lot of money. But it's nothing in comparison to what the Super bowl or any major golf tournament nets its participants.

For one, they're under TV rights, earning these "teams", something in the ranges of 10 to 200 millions a year just for being there.

Title: Re: dota2
Post by: lacoste on July 08, 2014, 01:50 PM
Dont forget where esports was 5 years ago, Volvo and Riot did incredible job pushing it forward. TV, however, each and every year is less and less attractive, but that doesnt mean broadcasting channels arent interested in it (Sweden, Korea, China, recently Germany with ESL One). Also the main thing is old fart's mentality; new generation will see esports in a different light, as most of them are/were gamers just like us. Its still very risky to be a pro player today, but it will change. On the other hand, conventional sports have this advantage of being "immortal", while games die within a couple of years; ARTS games (DotA/Dota 2, as of right now) and CS/CS:GO, though, have proven having long lives and keep getting more and more popular, but without a good developer with vision and will to constantly improve, doing things right, games will sadly keep dying and get replaced by new titles.
