Title: Do you like your country?
Post by: Twyrfher on May 17, 2014, 02:59 AM
Do you like your country? and why.

Take the question as you want, whatever point of view is ok. The question could be kinda ambiguous but that's ok, answer as you want.

I miss my country, I left 4 years ago.
The things I miss most are the reasons why I like it, I think :)

- Food and COFFEE. It seems rhetorical, and it is. THe first three years, I was trying to force my self to not complain about coffee, because I hate every italian abroad who complain about coffee... but... now, I miss that f@#!ing BAR, with that f@#!ing STAND UP Coffee, so tasty and strong. And every time I go home and I take the highway, where there is the best coffee ever, I am about to cry when I take those 3 sips.
Btw, I will buy soon a professional Espresso Machine, I cannot have a life without a good coffee.

- I come from Tuscany, it has different kind of landscapes every some kilometers, so wild, it remembers me that I am a beast and where I belong.

- Cities. Cities in Italy have old histories, arts, you can smell this, you can see this, you can touch this, you can live this.
This is a thing that I have not found everywhere out of my country. Well, I don't like living in the city, but when I go there (every morning ehehe), I wish I could breath those smells.

- Politic... auhuah Joking, I will neither come back to vote :)

Ano, did you ever try the nespresso coffee? I love the ristretto ones, all black. I dont like every coffee either but nespresso never dissapointed me.

Worst coffee I had in the states and in asia. Australian one wasnt good too. Best I had in Italy and... Switzerland  :)

On topic, I love my country and its a big privilege to live here. But this might be obvious when speaking about switzerland. Here everything is just perfect and people need to go off-border to realize this from time to time.

 Here everything is just perfect

It is for the middle and upper class isn't it?. It's still one of the biggest "cosmopolite" countries with  big discrimination issues even as far as xenophobia in some cases supported by political instances.

as for spain, we're f@#!ed... a divided country since the civil war, bunch of racists, language ignorants and an economy on the level of Greece.
As for the positive things... we still have one of the best public transports in the world... we have the best restaurants in the world... and our 4 star hotels are 5 stars in other countries at the cost of 3 stars, but this is to the benefit of tourists... . The weather and the people are also pretty good for Europe.

There's stuff to like, and stuff not to like. It's kinda like asking whether you like food.. or games hosted in anythinggoes :O

If I had to choose any country to live in... it would be Norway, Iceland or Switzerland.

Those countries seem to have the largest % of civilized people  ;D

I work in Switzerland actually, I have the Nespresso machine at work auhauha But... it's a machine, it has not a warm heart. The secret of the espresso is in the beans and how they are ground and then the proper machine that gives you the right water pressure and temperature... It's a mix of 4 things.
Nespresso, and similar, is not bad.. but... nothing compare to a proper machine.

By the way, I live between France and Switzerland and I have to say that coffee in Switzerland is much much better than in France (where there is the best bread of the world). And when I am there I always take long coffee, I mean, your coffee.

PS: And I like my region, Tuscany, because tonight has given me this as gift... and ... f@#!... that was really awesome... nothing else to add about this wine. :

I love the USA, maybe for a different reason than most people do.  I love the athletics, we have the biggest and most accessible pro sports leagues in the world, and the best athletes.  Can't imagine living in a place where I can't catch a wide variety of sports played at the highest levels.

The only possible exception being UK/Euro football, I know I would get into it if I lived over there.

Well the government here was (and is?) always shit here. They f@#!ed up this country as much as they could. They are stealing as much money as they can while they are laughing in the TV. So the payment is low usually and there are not much possibility to find a good job, unless in the capital (Budapest). Making a company is also hard, coz taxes are damn high.

People here are usually not satisfied and are jealous. And the other bad thing is gipsys, who are a big brake for the evolution, they are living from our taxes.

But this country is also interesting. We have a very long and varied history. We don't really know where we are coming from, some scientists think that we are UFOs. :D We have nice medieval cities, castles and we have a lot of mineral water. Our language is one of the most ancient one, which is kinda hard to learn.

But the most interesting thing that I like in this country that despite of it is f@#!ed up by politicians (even politicians out of this country) and jews, we still are everywhere: we have / had very nice sport results (football, handball, fencing, wrestling, kayak, canoe, pentathlon, swimming...), and we discovered some things too, had scientist such as János Neumann, etc..

Same goes to Romania + the gypsy part  ;d

Positive things would be the beautiful relief (amazing landscapes),nice art/historical stuff, hot chicks, cheep booze and good music.
Although the countries economy is getting worse and worse, people are still pretty relaxed and they know how to enjoy life.

+ People know how to f@#!ing party xD

i like the place where i grew up and lived kinda all my life. the place where i have my family and friends around. i tried moving away once. that might work for some people, but not for me. i'm pretty rooted to my home.
but that has nothing to do with my homeland. if i grew up and lived somewhere else that would be just the same (shitty conditions for life excluded).
i don't give a shit about germany tbh.

Yes, New Zealand is good. No extreme winters. It's mostly safe and corruption is low. Some racism, but not much. Mostly people from lots of different cultures all speak the same language and get along fine. Lots of forward-thinking people and atheists. There's not too many people, so I don't have to compete too hard to get concert tickets for example.

Bad thing is the low wages compared to other western countries. And the bastard politicians and stupid people (but that's the same everywhere :P).

@KiSH :  I know a lot of the problems of your country man, I'm working at an ONG that are making some work there, campaings against social problems like kids under 12 years old doing heavy works with more than 50 hours per week for... 3 US Dollars per week, etc. Bangladesh (Dhaka) has some serious, serious problems, it's very sad.

I like Chile personally because I live very good here, I had education, money, good family, etc, we have a lot of beautiful landscapes from the north to south, a lot of beaches, mountains, etc. You can take an idea by viewing the TaG's space on tus.

Besides that, imho we don't have too much problems COMPARED with other sudamerican countries, or latin countries (here we have to count Central America, bl Fenice, and Mexico.). Of course we are still a 3rd world country, a lot of poverty, low rates of unemployement tho, but that's falacious cos a lot of the jobs here has bad payments, lot of hours per week, bad conditions, etc, but at least there are a way to win some money...

Politicians are crap of course, but imho aren't that crap as other places. The rates of corruption are low according to those suspicious international studies xD but I've been related to some politics here in mi city (and some friends aswell) so I can speak from here, and it's like I said.

A big problem of Chile is the natural centralism that we have due our special geography, we are too long, too much long, and thin as f@#!. So the cities here are way far from each other, for example, I'm at 500Km far from the capital (Santiago), that's 5 hours at car (6 ar bus) and that's very near... Imagine other cities where are like 1000, 1500 or 2000 far away from Santiago, and sadly a lot of things like job, cultural events, concerts, business, etc, are mainly focused and made there.

We have "flaites" (aka reN`s... j/k (not)), but that's a latin american problem, so there's no need to complaint about it. You don't have to mess with them if you don't want, but day by day it seems they are taking a lot of terrain xD but well.

Overall I like Chile, people are very special, our humor it's very weird yet direct (and harsh), we are always speaking with jokes and double-sense, we have a lot slangs, too much, we could be talking with 99% of pure slangs and other latin american countries won't understand a shit about what are we talking about (except Argentina and maybe Perú, they know some part of them)

I definitely like Oregon, and I would tentatively say I like the US, but it's also true there are some places in the south that I'd find outright oppressive to live in, due to racism, homophobia, gun nuttery (11,000+ gun homicides per year, kind of disturbing), prejudice against atheists, etc. Obamacare (thanks Obama) is at least making this a little less of a backwards shithole in terms of healthcare, and I feel like we're going to get some respectable minimum wage laws passed eventually, though for now we're lagging way behind other first world countries. We're at least pushing the bar in some areas like marijuana legalization and gay marriage. Our national politics are controlled by legalized bribery, but I suppose the government functions alright at the local level. In terms of people, there's definitely too much stupidity, nationalism, religious fervor, and radical right-wing ideology, though where I live these aren't nearly as prevalent.

We're becoming much more of a service sector economy, so I don't know, job prospects aren't that amazing. Of course, it's a great country if you want to pursue an entertainment-related career, which is kind of what I'm trying to do in Portland with my music: http://ghosttoycastle.bandcamp.com/. We kind of mold ourselves to the places we're born in though, I think most people tend to like where they live, partly because they can't imagine living anywhere else.

Do I like my country? I think yes. There are my friends, my family, all people i care about and it makes place good for me. It's placed in central europe so climate is moderate. It's usually around 30 degrees at summer and -5 at winter. We have a lot of space to life, there is no overpopulation.  The problem is current political class and way of polish economy. For me it looks like this: Almost all parties want only to control economy or people. There is almost no option that you can vote for party that leave average people a free choice. They want to "help" you to life better, even if you don't want to. They brag, that current year they approve more laws than year before. And seems like no one in media come up with idea that it means only more control on every part of our life every year and it only gets faster and faster. I'm not gonna talk here about EU, all knows what's their politics. I'm very happy that we are not so rich country like our neighbours, because we still have low state benefit so foreigners don't come here to lay on their asses and take free money(we can go to other contry and do it easily). Actually i'm studiying math in insurances and financials and the situation on work market isn't so good. I don't know if I find good job in my proffesion. Polish goverment strongly helps polish people to be one of cheapest workers in europe. Now about people. A lot of people here complaint about their financial sytuation in life. Almost no one of them see that 84% of adults drinks alcohol and only 16% are sober, over 1/3 smokes ciggarets and many young people take drugs. So when couple make their first children, suddenly they detects that they don't have money and they are very suprised. Most of them don't see corelation between wealth and money which they(and also their parents) spend on cigarets, drugs, alcohol for example for 7 years(This kind of products also don't help to develop their career, health) and they start to accuse everything except themselves.

I've heard Poland is a complete shithole from Polish people that live over in the United States now.  They told me stories of it being polluted to shit and acid rain falling from the sky and how the cities are all very dirty.  Seems from this thread the eastern europeans are not all that happy about their home these days.

There's lots of money to be made here and everything's cheap, relatively. But oh well- most people that emigrate have no education and no skills to get a well-paid job in Poland. That's why they prefer to clean toilets abroad and feel like they're earning big bucks compared to what they would make here. Miserable f@#!s. Of course they complain. The stuff about cities being polluted and dirty is just ridiculous, guess that's how they're trying to remember it to feel better or something. Maybe a couple of industrial cities on south would be an exception, but it's nothing beyond the Europe's norm.

There's lots of money to be made here and everything's cheap, relatively.

Not sure where you live. Cheap for who? Even tourists complain about prices in here. And average polak has to work like nuts for a shitty pay compared to western eu, unless you have like xx years of experience and a decent job, then you will be paid like the bottom of what western people get from day 1. Good luck traveling around the 1st world countries while working here, cant say that about western people. You know whats significantly cheaper in here? Potatoes. Then theres health care, revenue and other national things like this at the level of potato. Potato country. But yeah, if your needs are not next level, you can live here thats no problem.

To sum up: Average pay for a polak just after uni 450-600 € in poland; 4x that in the west. Prices are similar.

Cant say a bad word about the dirt, Poland is much cleaner than some of the G7 countries in EU.

Title: Re: Do you like your country?
Post by: KinslayeR on May 20, 2014, 01:09 PM
so.. if we talk about poland..  and moneys..  Before I worked as painter room, paver, and other shit building jobs.. I got payd 2.2 euro per hour job with no employed, I did not enjoy that job, coz we worked 12-15 hours per day, even if there was rain, so i had to wake up in 5.00 and was in home 20:00. Everyday, even saturday.. There was no life, just stupid job with stupid ppl and with no employ.. So i changed job.. now I work in game saloon (amusement arcade??), here I am emplyed but I got minimum payd = 1 euro per hour.  Work in building was more payd but with no life and no enjoy and no employ so i prefer that job..
Anyway..  my job now = 250 euro per month.     Last week I took my gf on concert...     2 tickets = 150 euro, some beers, food , pizza and others = 40 euro. Benzin= 50 euro in 2 sides.  1 day in hotel = 50 euro, taxi =  20 euro   other things: 30 euro

Wait..  Did this weekend cost me more than 1 month job? :O God.. bless the poland..

BTW: what if I want live in my own house, and have nice car and child.. Poland is a nice country, but only for tourists..

I totally dont agreee with u Van, even if u sayd "relatively".  Maybe u are student yet and u have reach parents, but when u start ur own life u will see differences.. Even "relatively" good payd polish job is less than minimum in country like norwegia or australia. U can ask, wtf am i still doing here, just go away to norwegia or finland, but here i have family and girlfriend, there i dont even know language and what quarantee to have job there? And maybe I am patriot ? LOL, still bigger patriot than ppl who work in other country, they forget their family language, and then they come back with millions euros, buy everything in polish shops and they say they are patriots xd  patriots, who cleaned up yankee's toilets ;]

You're lucky to have a 1€/h job? FYI in Cracov McDonalds pays 2.5 times as much.

If I were to estimate earnings of my closest friends it would be around 600-700euro not counting benefits, straight after uni. (that's in IT field) I know it's shit compared to some of the western countries, but you can't compare wages without comparing the cost of living. You're ignoring the concept of price relativity for items like rent, internet, food and other commodities which are hella cheaper here.
I don't know where you're getting the 450€ from because you can make around 400€ in a regular office job without a diploma. Well, maybe slightly less than that.

Again, it's silly to even state everything in euros.
Title: Re: Do you like your country?
Post by: Twyrfher on May 20, 2014, 03:15 PM
:o hmm, here in Chile you have this costs:

Minimun salary by goverment: 273 Euros monthly for 45 hours per week. Typical jobs for that payment are for example the guy/girl who weights the cheese, ham or stuff in the supermarket, or to attend a small grocery shop, maybe like a painter of small houses, working at call centers, security guard in a small bar, and all the small works on supermarkets or big retail stores.

1 Gallon of gas = 4,42 Euros.
1 Kg of bread (highly consumed here, maybe the base of every chilean family daily diet) = 1 Euro.
A bus ticket for a travel of 500Km (-.- xD) = 13 Euros.
An airplane ticket for the same distance = 65 Euros.
A ticket for a movie on cinema = 4.5 Euros.
1 small beer on a mid expensive bar = 3,25 Euros
1 large pizza at Dominos (pepperoni special) = 13 Euros
A Toyota Yaris 2014 mechanical gearbox = 10.270 Euros

Some other salaries (aprox of course... it varies depending the enterprise, CV, luck, contacts, etc):

Mechanical Engineer at first year: 1000 Euros
At 5 years: 3250 Euros
Teaching at University with master degree: between 1400-2340 Euros depending the quality and prestige of the Univ.
Medical Doctor with 5 years of experience, working at public hospital (bad services): 2000 euros
And at private clinic: 4000 or more.
A junior webmaster: 500 Euros.
Senior webmaster or IT developer with lastes technologies, certificated: 1000 Euros if you are employed, and maybe 2000-2500 if you have your own business.
A maid house: 300-500 Euros (poor-medium family or rich family

BUT Education!!!!?????

That's expensive as fUUCk here compared with the salaries. Some examples:
- Computer Engineer (6 years of total study): 1 year costs 3250 Euros (lower cost on a poor/bad University), 4200 on a classic or more prestigious University.
- Medicine (7 years): 1 year at 3900 to 10.000 Euros depending the University.
- Architecture (6 years): a little bit less than Medicine.
- High School could be public (free) or private. Private schools are between: 200 Euros per month to 800 Euros per month (that's what my brother pays for each of his 3 sons)

Every family has to cost the education of their sons, you can ask some "credits" to banks or govement (they only act as an intermediary between you and the bank) and then you could pay only the 5% to 50% monthly depending how poor you can accredit it, or what social problems could you have (unemployed parents for example, dead parents, etc), then, when you starts to work, the goverments (or private banks) starts to charge you automatically that asked credit  till the debt is finished. Imagine... the main salary in Chile has to be between 390 or 900 Euros per month, that's the range of payments what most families have.

Here: if you have some money, you can make some money; if you are poor, u are doomed to be poor and also all your sons.

but rich people in poland and chile are as rich as rich people in western europe and they have np paying the same prices those countries do for things such as concerts and high education

that's the main issue, otherwise those things wouldn't have a market at those prices

we pay the same por Domino's pizza here, and I'd say beer is probably cheaper  :-X

those who can't speak spanish: mcdonalds has taken big mac out of their menus and signs in all argentina mc donalds to try and stop people from ordering. they can still order it though. the reason is that like many things in argentina they have a fixed price (goverment imposed, mcdonalds can't do pish) that is frozen and doesn't "get on with times" making a big mac menu not profitable for mcdonalds.

not sure if that has changed since then, though

Where are you buying at Twy? I pay less than 3 euros for a pint of heineken in a more than decent pub in the middle of Las Condes -one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Chile- and 11 euros for a large pizza, with a 1.5 L coke and appetizzer at Dominos pizza too. I guess you live in Antofagasta  :D.
I worked in a call centre for a short period of time for 900€ gross.

Education is damn expensive while the teachers salary is a joke, though everyone can afford it getting a loan.
I disagree with your statement about poors. A lot of my friends were raised in middle-low class families and now are engineers, lawyers, etc.

Regarding eastern europe countries, I liked them way more than others like Italy and Belgium for example! Maybe because they look poor  :D But it is clear they are lagging behind in Europe and even comparing them with southamerican countries like Chile or Argentina.

Well yeah, I live in Concepción, it's pretty expensive in some stuffs compared to Santiago. Some months ago I had some beers in some pubs at El Golf and they weren't too expensive as some popular bars here in Concepción... lol yes @ Antofagasta. Anyway, my usual bar is the cheapest of the area, 1 Liter of "Escudo" (a cheap beer) cost 2 Euros, it's almost impossible to find any cheaper here, but a little bottle of Corona cost what I said here, maybe a little more in some more exclusive pubs.

900 Euros for a call center? wow, that's a lot man, that's 3 times the minimun salary of Chile. Anyway I was putting just some examples only, I've rejected some callcenters job for the payment that I said. Mi mother was an University teacher (with License grade), her best salary at her last year was like 600 Euros ... :/

About poverty, my idea was that with "some money you can make some money", not that only rich people could be become rich aswell. And I said "money" in a manner to say "education" actually, cos as u said, I know a lot of families too with education but without money, and their childrens could study with loan from the bank.

900 for a call center is a lot indeed. They make 600-800 here in a CC. (600 is minimun salary for a full-time job here in Spain)

As for the current topic: My brother-in-law is working in a call center for an insurance company and earns like 1,600-1,800 € per month (after taxes) depending on his shifts. It's considered slightly above average salary here, quite saddening that the same work is worth much less in other countries..

I generally like Germany, we have some regions with really nice landscapes, we're beer land (<3 beer) and we have one of the best health care systems in the world. The gap between rich and poor has been increasing steadily over here as well but it's a little bit different to many other countries.. Even if you're unemployed in Germany you get social benefits (taken from taxes) so you can actually pay rent and buy food (Anubis and Peja can tell you more about that :P ). Our economy is pretty strong too, although with all those EU commitments we're giving away a lot of money for economically weaker countries. Additionally, education is pretty much free here. High school is free no matter what, and there's regions where even university doesn't cost you a single cent. So even if you're from a poor family, if you've got the right attitude you can actually get a nice degree and a well paid job afterwards.

What I don't like about Germany is..... Its people. It feels like crime and violence have been picking up drastically over the past couple years (especially among the young folks), to a point where in some places you need to be genuinely scared of walking around alone after sunset. I mean it's okay-ish to get into a fight after an argument but currently there are a lot of cases where people just go around and look for prey, even kicking their victims in the face after they're already on the ground. They don't know when to stop, the sense of honor is slowly fading away.
Germans as a whole are pretty indifferent to each other, they focus on themselves and their family and don't really care what's happening around them. Makes me a bit envious of countries where people are more hospitable and friendly.

I'm happy to have been born in the Netherlands. In general, people have it good here and I'm currently in a good position financially. I'm a bit worried about some of the things going on, more particularly economically - on the one hand, they want people to buy houses, cars, etcetera, but on the other hand, they want to take away job security and all that (a lot of temporary work).
Next to that, they kind of suck at regulating things :) By the time I'm done specialising, there will be 200 unemployed radiologists (very likely that I will be one of them, so I may have to move abroad).

The Dutch are pretty open minded people, too. There's a good reason the difficult topics are discussed and implemented here first in general (like euthanasia, gay marriage etcetera). I love that we don't dub television/movies (except cartoons/series for children), which teaches us foreign languages at an early age already. These are probably the result of being a pretty small country.
There's always the xenophobia, just like in any other country (Geert Wilders and such), but it won't become bad enough to make policies horrible in that respect. Companies do tend to treat foreign workers like shit, though. Can't say I liked hearing about that.

Basically, it's a mixed bag, just like in a lot of other countries. I personally enjoy more of the positive aspects of my country.

900€ gross is like 500.000 CLP net and a bit more, was okay for a bilingual call centre in The Ritz Carlton, definitely the worst job I've ever had tho :(

In Switzerland you got paid very good compare to other countries. But you have to pay a lot more too. Here some prizes:

6 pack redbull 250ml: €5
1 packet of zigs (20 piec.): €6
100 gr. of beef: €6-8
100 gr. of chicken: €3-5

Weird: Beer is cheaper than water!

Samsung TV 55' UHD: €2500
1 litre of fuel: About €1.50
Playstation 4 (one controller, without extras): €400
7 gr. of weed: €80
1 single bigmac: €5.50

A callcenter job brings you about €2.500 up, dep. shifts and region, 100%.

Mechanic job after 4 years study: Min. €3.300. So other compareable jobs.
To rent an appartement (4 rooms): €1000 - €2000 (land / city) per month.

I pay for my appartement (3,5 rooms) €1000 a month. I dont live in the city.

So there are a lot of "working poors" in Switzerland. You just work for your costs. Guess this problem is all around the world.

Are these wages gross or after taxes, etc?
SPW, if these are net wages then you can live wery well I imagine.
E.g. 20 cigarettes here is about £8/10€.
Fuel ~same price.
We use bedrooms as a unit for rent, but my mates in London pay between them (2 people) £1700/2150€.

If your wages are after tax your standard of living is far bettervthan ours

Yea, most of taxes included. You live good when you learnt smth for a better paid job. But if you do just easy work cause everyone could do it, then you dont have much left at the end of the month. But sure, with a good job you have a perfect life in Switzerland. I always say I am twice a lucker when borned. First is life and second the country.

What DarkOne said really.. I like living in Norway, I'm very greatfull for being born here. It's a nice and beautiful country with a peacefull, open-minded and democratic society. What I like most is equality for all, no matter religion, sex, sexual orientation and so on. Education is free, even college, and health care is free. You make a lot of money living here, I think only Switzerland can compare, but it's also sooooo damn expencive. Being a student, it's not very good. I have to work a lot beside my study to survive (but who doesn't). Tobacco and alcohol is the most expencive I think. Government want to prevent youth from start smoking obviously, and alcohol in general is highly expencive to reduce alcoholism in families. I get that.. SPW you say 1 pack of sigarettes is expencive 6 euros? I laughed, here it cost 12 euros. 1 beer in pub is 10 euros easily, a drink 15 euros. Shop stop selling beer at 8 PM, wine and vodka is sold in seperate stores closing at 5 PM. All clubs close around 2-2.30 AM!

What I dislike about my country.. well I think its how lazy and greedy people are. Norwegian youth is lazy, they don't want to do any hard work, they don't want to work in certain jobs (like in a grocery shop). The work we don't want to do ourselves, we let people from other european countries take care of. I have an example of my own: as a summer job I work in a low-paid job as production worker producing salmon and trout. 95% of the people working there are from Lithuania or Latvia. My friends used to work there as well, but they rather do something not so physical, hard work with long days now. A normal day in this job you make 160 euros, yet this kind of job is not interesting for Norwegians. What I have learned, working eight summers straight there, is that people from eastern europe have balls, unlike Norwegians :D

I don't think you can complaint about people going abroad to make a better life Kinslayer.. I have seen many people come here, work for a couple of years, buying a new house in their homecountry, and then going back. You gotta do what you gotta do you know...

That doesn't sound fun! That happens even in the city?

In the UK there is this London bubble.
London has their own wages/costs/transport/lifestyle and you either love it or hate it.
You could get really far if you live there but the costs are massive.

Most my mates moved from Cardiff to London (or stayed in Cardiff) but I moved to the rural (towns) for quality of life - it is a trade off.

I thought Finland is the most paternalistic society when it comes to alcohol/cigarette policy. Apparently not.. :D

In pubs you may have to pay 6-7 euros  for a basic lager (0,5l), 8-10 euros for a drink. Beer is much cheaper in shops so people drink at home and go only to night club drunk. Pubs can't even offer "happy hour" prices anymore. Night clubs close at 4 AM but there has been debate about closing them earlier.

Shops stop selling beer at 9 PM and don't sell until 9 AM. All drinks with more than 4,7% alcohol is sold in separate stores owned by the state (monopoly). Now there has been debate about selling only 3,5% beer in shops. Cigarettes cost ~6 euros and are hidden under cashdecks so you have to know which cigarette you want.

Whenever government needs money, they raise alcohol/cigarette taxes because it's easy to justify as alcohol policy. Now we see people bringing their beer from Estonia with vans... :D Thanks to EU, government can't do much although they try. You can bring alcohol only for your "own use" and some other silly restrictions.

Good posts lads.
I haven’t had the motivation/inspiration enough yet to make a proper post about the place I live. But check out this article. Andalusia (south Spain) has just been chosen as the best place to live in by an English journal. Also, check out the World's top 20 places in the aforementioned article. Worth a read...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/internationalproperty/10710665/Worlds-top-20-places-for-the-good-life.html

I love my city , Sevilla - which is Andalusia’s capital. I’ve lived outside for some time so I could really appreciate even more the way of living here.
Looks like most of us are satisfied with our places. I do miss one thing though, northern countries seem to be more balanced when it comes to being open-minded, religion or equality amongst other cultures, as Crazy said about Norway above.
Also, regarding DarkOne’s post - I’m kind of jealous of those who had the opportunity of watching non dubbed tv/movies. I do believe that being able to speak English at a decent level can bring in a lot more opportunities, especially nowadays.
