bad whiskeys like jim or jack i mix with coke.
mix good ones would be a crime :)
i like lagavulin for scotch bullitt for burboun
yeah i like whiskey and drink it mostly pure, but i enjoy and don't drink it fast.
the idea of richard paterson to mix it with a shot cold water is good or 1 little piece of ice is ok too.
i like how he is talking to the whisky, before drinking it. lol
in last time i bought jim beam, grant's, ballantine's, tullamore dew and johnnie walker red label.
so just standart whisky, no single malts. :p
Month ago friend brought bottle of Paddy's (dunno which) from his vacation in Ireland.
I was really surprised with quality. Not that expensive too. In same price rank as jack.

Famous Grouse is my staple. Can't afford to buy single malts too often unfortunately.
When my Gran passed away, she had like half a dozen minature bottles of whiskey in one of her cupboards, some of them were like 30-40 years old, I just gave them away to mates cuz Whisky gives me the boke...

this week Caol Ila 12... Unfortunately these guys still filter their f@#!ing whisky... it's not that bad... but the color is too "old-fashion"... too bright... and the taste it's too much on the vinegar side... anyone tried the Moch Caol Ila?

philies reviews of special gins #1:
Professor Cornelius Ampleforth's Old Tom Bathtub Gin
last week i emptied this little bottle of very fine gin by famous prof. ampleforth, who runs a small distillery somewhere in england. the name is not a name, but kinda a description of the gin.
old tom gin is a sort of gin that is sweeter than the common london dry gin.
The name Old Tom Gin purportedly came from wooden plaques shaped like a black cat (an "Old Tom") mounted on the outside wall of some pubs above a public walkway in 18th century England. Under the cat's paw sign was a slot to put money in and a lead tube. From the tube would come a shot of gin, poured by the bartender inside the pub. (from wikipedia)
bathtub gin means, that it's homemade under amateur conditions (like filling your bathtub with alcohol and throw some spices in, then fill into bottles after a few weeks).
the bottle looks awesome, wrapped in paper, wax top, nice graphics with walls of text explaining the old tom story.
the gin itself is light yellow, smells like lots of stuff. it has a complex and strong juniper and coriander taste followed by a sweet taste of cinnamon. you don't taste the 42 % alcohol, it's pretty smooth.
i didn't try it with tonic water, would have been a waste.
btw: it won worlds best compound gin award 2014.
definitely not the last ampleforth gin i'll try.
I have blended these two whisky, it turned out a fantastic mix
they are very good anyways, but together they exalt each other, it's amazing.
a classic ;)
I'm a fan of pretty much all kinds of booze, except for stuff that tastes strongly of anise / black licorice. *puke*
I used to drink a lot of liquor, but these days I primarily just stick to beer. It just depends on my budget. I don't have a good-paying job anymore, so I haven't bought myself a bottle in some time.
I'm a single malt scotch fan above anything else; however, I really LOVE this stuff: http://www.chartreuse.cz/images/chartreuse-1920.jpg
Both varieties are incredible, but I prefer the darker of the two. The flavor is very complex, and at 55% ABV is does pack a punch. Best enjoyed slowly with lots of ice. It does have a little bit of an anise / black licorice flavor, but it's not overpowering at all. It's a bit pricey here in the states (roughly the same amount as a decent bottle of scotch), but it's worth it.
Also, fun fact: the color 'chartreuse' is actually named after this liquor. :)
philies reviews of special gins #2:
Star of Bombay
as i'm at my last glass of "star of bombay", it's time for another review. so let me rant a bit about "bombay" gins.
"bombay sapphire" has managed to be available kinda everywhere around the globe, you know the light blue bottle from bars (the gin itself is colorless, of course):
that one is ok, if you want to drink it with tonic water.
if you go somewhere, it will often be the best gin you can get.
(now that doesn't mean it's really good though)
of course the gin is not from bombay, but from london. it's supposed to have an original recipe from 1761, but this gin as it is now is available since 1987. on the cover you can see a pic of queen victoria, and below the star of bombay, a 182-carat sapphire from sri lanka (as you can see, here is nothing as it's supposed to be).
the label refers to india being under the rule of the british crown from 1850 - 1950.
since 1998 bombay gins belong to bacardi (which is imo neither a sign of quality nor a company to support).
there's a "special editon" of this gin, which is called Bombay Sapphire East:
it's basically the same with a bit stronger taste of pepper and lemongrass.
but actually i wanted to write about the "star of bombay" (the gin, not the sapphire xD):
it's supposed to be the bombay gin you can drink neat.
well...
it is really better than the standard bombay gin and tastes a bit more complex (they say they've given the botanicals more time to lay down their flavour).
nevertheless it has a strong taste of industrial alcohol :/
greets from bacardi.
for a price of 40 € there are way better gins around.
won't buy again.
cheers
Good old mother's ruin
hate bombay sapphire, good review philie
Gordon's ftw!

Sears Cutting Edge Gin
i'm in the mood for more (gin) so here we are. i just got me a bottle of this young (2013) new school gin:
the edgy bottle with the minimalistic design looks really stylish somehow.
though i gotta say its transparency is getting on my nerves, cause gins are in the first row on my bar and you can see the bottles in the 2nd row..
the gin is from paderborn, germany. you maybe know the famous bum-beer:
nowadays if you wanna get a grip on the gin market, your gin has to have something special and unique. the thing here is the "cutting edge" (tm): the botanicals used for the gin are cut with very strong and sharp knifes which is supposed to have a positive effect on the essential oils responsible for the flavour of the gin.
aha. well.. ok, if you think so.
the gin tastes very strong, mostly of juniper a bit of lemon and maybe some pepper. also the alcohol taste is very strong, but not to an annoying extent.
drinking neat is not recommended though.
but it tastes really nice when you drink it with some good tonic water. way better, for example, than bombay sapphire with tonic water. btw these gins are at the same price level.
btw tonic water. my favorite is this one:
sears says, you gotta drink it with goldberg tonic water:
the reason for that is that sears and goldberg both belong to mbg international premium brands.
goldberg tonic water is really good though.
enough of that now, time for a drink.
cheers.
That Sears gin looks like a bottle of aftershave.

Mombasa Club Colonel's Reserve
...but first some words to the standard mombasa club gin
(http://www.jashopping.de/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Mombasa-Club-Gin1.jpg)
this is one of my favorites to drink with tonic water. imo it tastes exactly like gin should taste. nothing fancy or exceptional, just gin.
the name refers to a private social club in mombasa during englands colonial time in kenya. the gin was made there and given to workers. the quinine in tonic water is supposed to have a prophylactic effect on malaria. nice excuse btw to drink all day.
with that original receipt from 1888 mombasa club gin is nowadays produced in england in small batches of 500 liters. you can see that also on the bottle, each has an individual bottle-number printed on it.
about 27 € is not really cheap for a gin, but it's worth it.
now to the colonels reserve
(http://casadeltequila.ch/images/gin-mombasa-club-london-dry-colonels-reserve.jpg)
this one is a limited edition of the standard mombasa club.
both are london dry gins. which does not mean they are from london, "london dry gin" is a set of rules for the gin production, for example no artificial colours and no sugar.
the bottle says "a special limited edition that honours and pays homage to those distinguished british officials who led the victorian empire at the end of the 19th century to its most glorious period".
well, whatever.
anyway, this gin is f@#!ing awesome!
it has everything a good gin should have, the taste is very balanced and smooth but also very complex.
drink it neat. not chilled, no ice, no tonic water, would be a waste.
42 € is pretty expensive for a gin, but it's (again) worth it. 5 stars out of 5.
cheers!

Bavarka
(https://www.rumundco.de/media/image/product/5031/lg/bavarka-bavarin-gin-46-07l.jpg)
my gin for today is a gin made not far from me (2 and a half hours by car). it comes from a distillery from hausham, a bavarian alp-village. the nearly 100 year old distellery lantenhammer produces several different spirits and liquors all using local herbs. as ground-distillate for their gin they use their own vodka.
you can still taste it afterwards, the gin tastes a bit vodka-ish. you also have a clean taste of all the herbs used. if i got to imagine, what a bavarian mountain spirit would taste, it would be exactly like this gin.
with 46% it is pretty strong. and with 38 € it is also pretty expensive, but worth a try.
a bonus is the awesome looking green bottle, definitely an eyecatcher on your bar.
btw, on the front you can see a picture of hausham.
the gin is best neat at room-temperature or slightly chilled.
mixing it with tonic water is not recommended but has a nice side-effect: cause of anise in the gin, the tonic water turns a bit "milky".
cheers!

welcome back to the topic for the real alCos ;)
today:
Colombian Aged Gin Treasure
(https://img.thewhiskyexchange.com/540/gin_dic1.jpg)
my wife brought me this one from prague. it's a gin made "with pride" (the bottle says so) by the colombian (wow) rum distillery dictador. the special twist with this gin is, they let the gin age half a year in used rum barrels and throw some lemons to it. normally you don't let gin age at all.
the result is a yellow liquid tasting a bit like mixing gin, rum and lemon liquor.
well, it's.. let's say different. the taste is a bit too strong imo (though it has "only" 43%).
when you mix it with tonic water it gets really interesting, cause the lemon touch gives the whole thing a refreshing taste.
the german price of around 34 € is ok. if you like gin, this is definitely worth a try.
a plus is the awesome and evil looking big black bottle.
ok, now i got no gin at home, which i have not already written about in here.
gonna buy some new stuff tomorrow ;D
cheers!

Ginself
(http://www.vinosycervezas.es/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/ginself.png)
i tried this gin from valencia today at a friend of mine. the special thing here is, that they use local grown oranges and mandarines.
its taste is pretty smooth with lots of orange and some nutty aftertaste (there are also tigernuts in there). it kinda tastes a bit like if you would mix gin with cointreau.
tbh, i don't like orange stuff very much :/ but if you do, this gin is for sure pretty nice.
when you mix it with tonic water, throw an orange slice to it ;)
