Title: Me covering a song
Post by: ShyGuy on January 04, 2012, 10:59 PM

My first real shot at covering a song... I like to think I did a good job considering I had a cold and was awake for over 24 hours before I started the project.

All vocals and mixing done by me, except for the instruments, which are by Fair to Midland

I don't like the music, isn't really my style, but the vocals are nice man, you have a great voice, I would personally use different effects with your voice.

Did you use any Autotune with your voice? If you didn't, man, you are good, very good, even if you did, you still have an amazing voice.

Would you be interested in doing some vocals and collaborating on a song with me?

I gave you a like :)

I did not use any autotune and I think I would enjoy working on a collaboration.  Thanks a lot!

I am very inexperienced with making vocal effects and stuff, I had to settle with what I could manage.  I hope to learn more about it tho.  The actual project sounded better before youtube compressed it I guess? you can hear more things a lot clearer.  Hopefully next project I will not have a cold and the overall quality of my voice will just sound purer

One of my specialities in music production is vocal effects, I really love playing around with vocals trying to push and squeeze everything out them :)

Do you use MSN at all? It's really the only chat program I have available at the moment, although if we are going to be serious about this, looks like you enjoy singing as passionately as I enjoy music production, then we should get skype or something where we can throw ideas back and forward and I can play you some live sounds so we can brainstorm live.

I can see only one potential problem, and that would be "Musical Differences" but seeing as I do enjoy most genres of music of all cultures and weird underground stuff and you seem like you enjoy a wide variety of music too I think we might come up with something, obviously it'll have to be limited to our abilities, but every new project has it's own unique learning curve.

I look forward to working with you :)

I was on break from university and staying at my parents home.  It's the only place I feel comfortable singing at because I hate if other random people can hear me while trying stuff.  I go back to uni tomorrow and I had wanted to record it but I had a cold for the last third of my break so I had to do it now or never

I am pretty sure you can do a lot better than this when the circumstances are better. Your vocals sounded weak, unbalanced and off at many parts, but I can definitely hear the potential in your voice.

At some parts, I could hear that you didn't let your voice loose, you didn't let it go, you didn't create the proper space for it, thus not making it able to unfold and have it break loose, you know what I mean? Like sometimes, it feels that you didn't even open your mouth or blow your vocal cords strong enough for your voice to expand.

These are all technical things in singing that you must always follow - although listening to this, I believe I don't really have to explain these to you ;) -, expecially on a record and especially, when covering a song, since that is the field where everyone who listened to the song on the radio gets to be a critic and for some, the original is always better.

I am really looking forward for another record, AMAZE ME! :)

thank you for the words!

Ray, i actually don't know what you mean. I have no vocal training, i don't know much about singing.. it is just something i do while driving.  it sounds like you know a bit about vocal training ;).

I agree though, when I listen to it i hear some parts that make me cringe a little.  It was hard to even talk very clear that day, but somehow I managed to push my vocals as hard as i could just so the cold wasn't so apparent, and obviously that affected the quality of my voice in a way that wasn't optimal :)

I covered another song with my friend about a year ago when i first tried singing. I didn't have a cold so i think my voice sounds better in that song than this, but it was also near the beginning of my hobby, so it is very pitchy in some spots. I will upload it and you can tell me what you think and how I can improve :)

I did this with my friend.  I'm the first vocals you hear, then you should be able to determine when I'm singing.  I hadn't listened to it for a long time, I think i sound pretty bad :)

I am fairly surprised that you had no vocal trainings, sounds like you got quite a talent then! Well I can tell you tips and things through a forum, but that can never make a fraction of the improvement you can achieve with a (good) teacher.

Singing is all about feelings, both in a technical and an emotional way, you have to feel things in your nose, in your mouth, in your throat, hell even your pants when I really think about it! :D And also, singing is performing, it is an art, it is a very powerful "tool" for expressing feelings and sending messages.

When you are singing, you are singing for a crowd, you want yourself heard. When you sing like I said you did on that record:

At some parts, I could hear that you didn't let your voice loose, you didn't let it go, you didn't create the proper space for it, thus not making it able to unfold and have it break loose, you know what I mean? Like sometimes, it feels that you didn't even open your mouth or blow your vocal cords strong enough for your voice to expand.

That part, your message is not received, the audience will not hear it, they will hear someone with no sound! It's like when you play the trumphet, you blow the damn thing, not just whistle in it, right? Same thing with singing, you have to make your message, your expression heard, it is very important, otherwise, you will feel the crowd turning away from you, which makes you nervous, lose your confidence and that affects your singing instantly.

On a more technical term, it is a general fact that sound needs space to properly expand. That doesn't mean that you can't sing opera in your basement... :) That means, that you have to create space in your mouth so that it expands and reaches out, grabs the listener by the balls and gives off a message of "damn, who's that guy?", that sends shiver down people's spines, that makes them listen! You have to practise a lot. Don't be shy, because you will start singing softly -> above mentioned happens. And if you keep practising softly, you will never have the feelings.

Basically, you have to open your mouth, big, like when you yawn! Just yawn, and note the feelings you have in your mouth. That is the feeling you have to get when you sing, you have to learn how to control those muscles and practise the feelings. Sing powerfully, send the message, look me in the eye and say: listen to me asshole, I'm a f@#!ing singer alright?!?

Ahh... singing is just so f@#!ing great man...

You kidding me? That's a lot better than the one you posted! From the moment you started I knew I was going to enjoy the next 4 minutes, I knew I was going to listen to it again, that is exactly what I'm talking about, that is how you do it! It is very emotional and it reaches out, it is great.

You have some problems with two things: one is the higher sounds, the other is the long sounds, when you like keep the sound coming, don't know how you say it. But that's something only a vocal teacher can teach you how to avoid.

Otherwise, great job.

I prefered the first one I think.
But still missing motivation in your voice, you get the same problem as I do. ;(

ShyGuy, don't listen to these people, trust me when I say this, you are a GREAT singer, and being compared to all this pathetic modern technology and "X-Factor" expectations is ridiculous, do what you enjoy doing, people who actually enjoy singing for what it is will know absolute impossible perfection is not needed.

Did you know, not one human alive can hit a note perfectly upon start, trust me when I say this, the singing in 80% + of modern commercial music nowadays is "impossible".

Make your own kind of music, I love your voice, f@#! the critics, although the things Ray says CAN make you a better singer, they are not essential.

Besides, you are better than at least 50% of corporate autotune rubbish I hear these days.
