Title: worms WMD
Post by: Ricky on October 07, 2024, 04:20 AM
Why did Worms WMD not become very likeable by our Worms community. It is pretty good?

For me, I don't like the game as much because I can't rope there as I would here on WA, and I can't choose big maps too. Plus as far as I know the game doesn't receive any updates.

Though I am sure it is a nice game overall. I did own it for under 2 hours on launch day and refunded it. Perhaps I didn't give it enough chance.

I would like to think that most fans of WA, their perspective of WMD is not favorable. But outside of this bubble, most people don't mind WMD and like it. If you look to the steamcharts, WMD outperforms WA on activity.

WA

That thread you linked, I feel embarrassed by it for some reason. There's a lot of cynicism in it. I think one of these people that promoted the game got chastised too, Jonno I believe. At least in private.

I really don't recommend reading this thread unless if you are WA historian or have great thirst for past events.

Most of that thread is normal internet forum stuff tbh.

I got a few laughs reading that.

We were right in the end though, WMD is a dire shadow of WA, nobody in their right mind would consider it a spiritual successor, it surprises me that WMD has a more active player base than WA, but then again the schemes they play are way more aimed at casuals and noobs rather than top tier players we have here on WA. The only thing I can think of as a pro that WA doesn't have is automated matchmaking, but what's the point when it doesn't have the customization or schemes that we enjoy so much here.

I remember watching a BnG Tournament on Twitch like 3 or 4 years ago and being majorly disappointed at how nooby it looked, even when it was the best players in the world on WMD competing apparently. The maps were just, bad, mostly flat, no proper hides etc and they had ridiculous weapons.

Not to mention during a lot of my streams on CWA we had a few regulars who played WMD even complaining about the bugs there that still haven't been fixed.

If WA didn't exist, it would be a great game, but because WA exists, it's a mediocre game at best.

steamcharts isnt a great metric of overall activity, wmd released when steam was king, whereas many people have non steam versions.  ive never played wa through steam.

does wmd even have a disc version?

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a cartridge version of WMD on switch, otherwise I wouldn't count on it

Yes I am sure it was fun back then and it is fun to read now for you.

Of course WMD is in the shadow of WA. I don't think I claimed otherwise.

I wouldn't count on the nonsteam user making up most of the activity on WA, Including Idle snoopers. If I personally were to provide an rough estimate of active nonsteamers user PLAYING WA I would have to say no more than 50 people, and that's generous. This alone is not enough to top WMD. (I am not saying WMD is the better game) Perhaps it is just the better game for newbies and casuals.

There are some things to dislike about Worms WMD like the accessible buildings and vehicles but other than that it is a nice little game with new and different captivating art and design than before Worms games. We could have been given a lot more which would have made this game parrallely good to WA and WWP but if it was meant to be like this then what can we do :-[

I honestly think that the accessible building was a neat Idea. Why do you think otherwise?

I feel it is a distraction to what is a beautiful game and i feel that it is also poorly implemented if you think of even having them. And you tell me why do you think it is a good idea?
Sorry Kradie am typing this on a phone. Missed adding your name to quote.

Quote from: Kradie on October 08, 2024, 03:36 AMOf course WMD is in the shadow of WA. I don't think I claimed otherwise.

Nobody said you did, I was speaking out in general.

Just to add, I've been playing some WMD recently over the past week, it's such a frustrating game.

sock and I tried some "Big RR" even though it's kind of like regular RR with very slightly bigger tunnels... I mean it's alright at best if WA didn't exist but absolute rubbish compared to WA.

There's no camera control that we're used to in WA, this is a big problem. sock also complained that you HAVE to use WASD for roping and arrows don't work. So you need to remap the keys somehow. Though I did find there's an option to use modern controls or classic controls, if you use classic controls then you will use the arrows.

Teleporting into the game is so slow and frustrating compared to WA, the way the worm faces seems to just be that it faces the middle of the map you cannot choose which way your worm is facing. It honestly takes 2/3 times longer to teleport in and it feels like that's due to either incompetent programmers or an incompetent decision to make teleporting take so f**king long!

Even if you select "no fall damage" your worm still loses it's turn based on fall damage, it's the most annoying thing about trying to rope. It doesn't make sense at all!

It's a whole charade you must go through to play your own custom maps in the game, first you've got to make them as normal, the size limit is "8192x4096" you can't have anything bigger than this. Once you've made your map you've got to also download the WMD Editor as a "Tool" in Steam, then once you have that open you have to import the map there, then publish it on the Steam Workshop.

It's a complete and utter f**king farce and a pointless waste of time compared to previous iterations of the franchise where you can just load maps straight from the game.

Honestly, the only good thing about WMD at this point is the visuals, the gameplay, the physics and features are all so much worse than WA it's mentally painful to think there are people out there who prefer it to WA...

Then you have the people who made WMD, they didn't make WMD for it to be a good game with good choices and decisions, they made it as painful and torturous as possible to play for ANYONE who is used to W2/WA/WWP. Especially with all the great features we have in WA.

And that's just me playing it for a few days for a few hours... And already it's doing my head in.

I'm really sad about the low demand for WA, for me it's the best of all, recently I've been playing a bit of Worms WMD and I noticed that there are more players than WA but it will never reach the feet of WA.
