Hello, I am having some bad screen lag issues. It happens offline and online. I have windows 7 and using Nvidia Geforce GT540M whatever that means. I use a fantastic gaming laptop but for some reason i get these screen lags that will almost always insure that I will f@#! up on the rope, f@#! up a jump, or f@#! up powering a weapon... they come in waves and then will stop for a while and then come back. I tried setting WA to high priority but that didn't work. Who can help this poor man?
pff, sucks man.
I had problems (almost permanent screen lags) when I installed PX and its modules for some reason. it was as if every few frames there were some missing, like seeing the film roll in a black and white movie :P The minute I deleted PX this went away.
Probably not what you are looking for huh?
I don't use PX so no
hm try connect with darkz, he also suffered on screenlags on a gaming laptop.
darkz, please connect with me
two people have suggested fiddling with the in game tweaks in the options menu but i dont even know what those options mean... who can tell me which options i can use for best performance?
Shy, I had the same issue and KRD helped me fix it.
1. Go to Control Panel
2. Go to NVIDIA Control Panel
3. Click the tab that says "Manage 3D Settings"
4. Click "Program Settings"
5. Select WA.exe from the list (if it's not there, click "Add")
6. Scroll down the bottom list until there's "Vertical Sync", set it to "off"
Lags should be fixed, it worked for me with a comparable notebook. The only problem which I still encounter is that my FPS drop to ~10 whenever a skunk's poison is released. But I can live with that. xD
ok i did that and im going to try it. Sounds like you know what you're talking about and i put much faith into your words
it seems to have worked! I do not have skunk lag tho but i played a 6 minute game and everything was extremely smooth. very much thank you from ShyGuy!
i have this problem too, got huge lags on my laptop with win7.
ill try it, hope that it will be well
disabling vertical sync can make the irritating texture flickerings when playing on a big map. this doesn't happen everywhere, but it can.
also, VSync can be turned off in PX.
Thanks for the information StepS, but I know perfectly well that ShyGuy wouldn't care about possible flickering on big maps as long as the screenlags are gone. And disabling VSync is the only possibility to get rid of them. The only one I know of, at least.
yep, I don't play on big maps usually. Thanks again , Darkz. Eat many cake and have a great day!
sad to say that I played a few more games and the lags are actually still there :( any other ideas? anything else I can do to the nvidia settings to make it run better?
maybe install a different driver version? I've heard people having success with different drivers ;/ sucky solution, but just maybe it will work
different driver version of what? I suck with computers, gotta be really specific

tried this, didn't work. Am now trying to see if an image as opposed to the disc will work for game play
I can't seem to make an image of my disc... says I have a bad block at 80% or something... don't know what the f@#! to do now
.
You could try to set the Windows energy save options to "high performance". There are cases where Windows doesn't recognize full screen applications as "priority worthy" and therefor sets the cpu clock to minimum for example. Just an idea though, not sure if it works... you can access those settings over Start -> control panel -> hardware and sound (or equal) -> Energy settings (or equal).
I don't have this "hardware and sound" option you speak of
Hm there should be: http://www.techrepublic.com/photos/windows-7-walkthrough-hardware-and-sound-control-panel/358565?seq=2

Right click on your WA.exe > Properties > Compatibilty > Disable Visual Theme + Disable Desktop Composition + Disable The Display High Resolution.
Don't know if it's the good names, but you might understand after seeing those checkboxes.
I just played with them until something worked, and it finally did.
So let us know if it also works for you.

I don't have the "disable the display high resolution" option but I will try the others.
I do have that after all, chakkman, didn't have it on classic view or some shit. gonna try that too. I feel like i'm f@#!ing up my computer tweaking with all this stuff for worms
ah, you mean battery power options... yeah, i have high performance on already

here it's like "Use 640x480 resolution", and there's also "Disable the screen scaling on high resolution".
PS: Warning, there can be issues with creating/modifying a team when certain compatibility options are active.

No ? :o

Np, since we only disable. :)
Anyway, let us know if it works Shy.

I haven't played worms since I made those changes, but I'll let you know soon
My bad Steps, I missunderstood.
Anyway, thanks for the image ( :P ): Shy, just check the 3 last of this "parameter" section.
I still get the same kind of lags :( GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:( >:( >:(
I did something for my host problem, maybe it's this which removed the lags.
It was creating a new rule in the firewall (there shouldn't be any about W:A in the second section).
You can try this.
PS: About the checkboxes, you disabled everything except the 3 lasts of "parameter" ?
In addition, I'll give you the checkboxes to remove ingame, cause they also make the game lag depending on your computer setting.
Edit: In Advanced Setting of W:A (ingame), remove everything on the left checkboxes except those ones in the "palette fix" section (there, they are all checked).
My firewall is off. I'll try the ingame stuff now
These are my settings... never in my life have I gotten any screenlags in worms

send me a screenshot of what i should have checked since we're getting lost in translation here

This also did not work. At this point, I feel it is my disc that is the problem. When I tried to make an ISO of worms, it didn't work because it said there was a bad block on my disc. Any suggestions on how I can go about getting a good WA.iso?
you should be asking...
'Any suggestions on how I can go about working a good WA.iso?'

those ones in the "palette fix" section (there, they are all checked).
I don't recommend the two first checkboxes in the Palette Fix, because if you don't run Project X, they will mess the colors once you maximize under Windows 7 during the match (it isn't really "Frontend" palette fix only), and you will have to press Shift+Pause. Only enable two last parameters of "Palette fix". Also, do not use wkcolorfix, it is buggy and messes colors in frontend, even with any fixes
try to instal newest Service Pack.
i instaled it yesterday and it helped.
Should I start a new thread even if I have the same problem as ShyGuy, but only different graphics card...?
You don't need. Just try what we suggested.

hey shy and barman, i see your viewing this thread... shall we play some laggy worms?

from this picture, which of these do i need checked?
There are 7 checkboxes: check the 4, 5 & 6.
I uninstalled WA completely and installed it using a fresh WA.iso, tried all the settings you guys suggested, but i still have the SAME type of lag... could this be a hardware issue? i have a brand new laptop that was custom built that can run other high maintenance games with ease. what could it be??? some files in my WA directory need tweaking or something? that's the only option i haven't explored yet
I guess it's just a prob of Windows setting.
I wanna thank you Abnaxus for the help. It worked out really well for me - now most of lags are gone and I barely get them now. 8)
I'm still getting the lags. I even tried now disabling my virus software, but it did not work
@AlTarf: You're welcome. Great to know we'll get another opponent on Wormnet. :p
@Shyguy: I'm sorry, I don't have any clues more. :-X

Indeed lol, you don't even wanna play if you're facing such lags.
bumping this in hopes that a tech savvy guy knows how to fix my problem
worst case, get a different video card. maybe one that many say works well ;/
You should try modifying the setting on your own, until something works.

I mean this video card can run very demanding games with ease... there has got to be some option, buried deep somewhere, that I can select or deselect and this would go away... Also, it's a laptop, so I can't replace the video card that easily.
I feel like it might not have to do with my video card... I mean, the game runs fine but at random times I get the series of lags... it isn't a science like I'll get them every 3 minutes EXACT. there have been 20 minute games where I didn't get any lags, and 5 minute games where I got plenty... I feel like something is going on in the background randomly that causes these lags... I've disabled anti virus but that didn't work... there has got to be a way out of this!
Now you disabled your antivirus, maybe you got a virus ? <.<
Try to look the active processes when you get those lags.
Have you tried checking if these lags only occur with an active internet connection? Try playing offline without internet.
Also, like Abnaxus suggested. When the lags occur write down the active processes and google for them.
If it's a driver issue try disabling sound completely for once and see if that helps. (in the hardware panel)
Try different resolutions. Start with the lowest and go up.
Try playing with a different keyboard.
it happens on and offline and with all keyboards. I minimized whenever i got lags to check my CPU, and i get huge CPU spikes apparently when i get the lags... I checked which processes were using CPU whenever I got lags and i found that some nvidia driver component was using a lot of CPU whenever i got the lag spikes, and then it would go down.. so i tried killing that process and I will let you all know if that fixes anything.
Have you tried forcing the W:A.exe to run on highest priority for CPU? And if that does not work set the process that is causing these CPU spikes to lowest priority.
On Win7: Task Manager - Processes - right click the process - set prority.
On WinXP: the same.
I have tried that. Also, I still have the lags after killing as many processes I know I can kill... something is still causing a huge spike in CPU usage, but none of the processes seem to be the culprit? :/ have no f@#!ing idea now
Do you use an image like .iso or the original CD? Try both methods to load the game.
I have tried both, same results, same exact type of lag
Sorry then I have no clue, have you tried reinstalling Windows? :D
hmm I have reinstalled worms but not windows. That's a very interesting idea.
ShyGuy I have the exact same problem but it happens so rare, that's why I don't mind. when it happens it happens about 3-5 seconds then it goes away. In the lag time, I hear my hard drive sound and it is exactly like windows is processing something in the background and eating CPU, so that W:A will lack. Mine is XP btw and this lags started exactly after .31 release.

that's not good. probably the you are encountering the bad clusters. To check and fix them, input
chkdsk /Rand put it to be done on reboot.

so no idea on how to fix it? they aren't so rare for me.. I usually get at least a couple sets of those lags every game... but like I said, sometimes i won't get them for 20 minutes...
I'm not sure reinstalling Windows would help you, since it might be a problem of setting.
Imo, can't be another thing since W:A is an old game.
Some games used to lag under Seven, cause they had been done for XP.
But many players here have no problems with it, so...
now I've uninstalled avast virus protection and replaced it with something lighter. Although disabling avast shields didnt work, i think the program itself was still searching for updates or something... I hope... so I'm going to try this now.. wish me luck
