Title: DarkOne tries his hand at making a WA movie
Post by: DarkOne on November 04, 2013, 09:31 PM

My first attempt at making a WA movie, rendering took me a long time to get right :o
My sincere thanks to all who helped me along the way (put those in the credits) with additional mention to Khamski, who put lots of time in helping me with rendering :)

Love it or hate it! Or have no particular sort of feeling towards this. Whatever applies :)

cool!

i'm studying it in the college, it's called "action figures". Your movie certainlly will inspirate others players to create more of them :)

i cant say the movie was spectacular...

but +1 on the map, i remember trying it, and i was instantly stumped..

most likely one of the hardest maps ever made, and the theme of the map is amazing.

About the spectacular part: the fortress thing is indeed kinda long, longer than any sequence in any other worms movie. But its a brilliant replay nonetheless. Perhaps a bit more speeding up on the 'boring' parts (worm just walking) woulda kept the pace. I wouldnt slow more moves down though. The bungee part felt a tiny bit tooo slow for me :)

I guess the survey of the map could also be improved (somehow), maybe a quick preview of the entire map in a single shot (by opening the .png in windows and screenshot that :)) and after that maybe a close up of the entire path the worm will travel. Or a small sequence of the vital/tricky parts of the map.

That + adding 2 or 3 more normal worms replays. The trojan thing kinda dominated the whole movie, but the 2 (or 3?) small 'moves' before that kinda made it weird. It wasn't a best-of-D1 movie, there was too much trojan for that, and at the same time not a single game replay cause of those tiny clips.
I think the trojan thing would come more to its right as a single, seperate movie, but definitely with those 'director cuts' at the end to spice it up a little... to make it more than just a replay file ;) With the map survey part a little more enhanced you would have a neat introduction as well.

I rest my case though, very interesting movie as it is  :)

Are you planning on working more with 'special effects'/video editing? Or is that more than what you had in mind?  ???
edit: just read simply rendering the whole thing took you a shitload of time hehe, so I guess any advanced stuff is out of the question for now.  ;D

I'm in the movie, I'll keep sending you cheques for all the royalty money you'll owe me.

Thanks for all the feedback :)

I know the movie itself is not that spectacular, but keep in mind, this is my first attempt and it's just me getting used to the video editing software :) I have plenty of ideas for other projects that I want to get done!

The movie was intended as a showcase for the challenge, considering the enormous amount of time that went into making it (and it seems even some of my clan mates had no idea of the intended solution, but considering the vast amount of stuff to do in worms, I can hardly blame them) and wanting for a larger audience to see it.
The first 2 replays were basically just an introduction: they were nice shots, but if you think that's all there is to WA, get ready for some of the batshit stuff you can pull in W:A.

The panning over the map was somewhat of a problem. There's no feature in W:A that allows you to pan over the map in a fluent way and my video card didn't allow for a bigger resolution than 1280*1024, so I wasn't able to do it in the video editor. Alternatively, I could've just used the image, but I wanted the "okay wormer" from the first replay to see the map and give up in the face of the challenge, so it had to be there from the start of the panning. (omg, a storyline! what a nerd!)

But yeah, it was a good learning experience :) The rendering part was the main reason I didn't want to start with too big a project (that and I didn't want to waste too much of other people's time with a long, boring one cause I have so much to learn). In future projects, I want to add special effects and all that jazz.
Maybe I could do some voiceover stuff. Several people have now told me I could go into voice acting (you know, if that other career doesn't quite work out :)), but you can judge for yourself:

(additional effects provided by Khamski, thanks man!)

I think it only took him 40 tries :)

35, but that was after the map was finished, of course :) Finding the right spots for all the moves, the correct width of tunnels and all that took somewhat longer, of course. In all, the map took several months to make, but some of the ideas were formed a few years before I even started.

you could have set the handicap feature in the control panel, so that your arrows work as the mouse...

allows your mouse to run very straight, controlled lines...

also, something i think should have been done, and wasnt (unless i missed it) was showing the weapon box..

I did not know that :o could've used that, indeed. Would take a long time to do, but it would work like a charm

Well, shit, I should have done that :(

+1, sir.

Badass dude! I really like the video. While I can't do any of that, I respect it!  So cool! Thumbs up!

That was intense! The nade trick especially. While I knew about it, I completely forgot it existed. Could it be WA's most unknown secret? ::)

Playing that map, I never would have thought to place the girder like that, or to use the nuke to raise the water. Awesome!

You could've just used the GreeN man! Its a good tool to export HD frames. Anyway, its still a non-standard sized map and even GreeN would have to move the camera ingame on 1080p, unless its possible to export even bigger reso...
