What is the backstory of WA anyway?
We play this game everyday, but we have no idea what's going on in-universe. Who are the worms? Why do they fight? Who are we doing missions for?
In the Intro we have this
Many moons have passed since the worms went to war
Onwards and upwards, bigger weapons than before
Boggy B took cover, he shivered on patrol
The arms race crazy, simply way out of control
Then his friend threw it, the latest device
Boggy B went and got it, against all advice - 'What the?'
His tail was split, and his energy lost
How many more will this dreaded war cost?
Then came the nuke, and the disease tumbling down
If the bug didn't get to you, you'd probably drown
But the worms battled on, through hunger and pain
Living to fight, just to victor again
And now it's the curtain call, the final onslaught,
no better bullet could you possibly have bought
But spare a thought for Boggy and with it his friend
So fight with their honour, and fight until the end
Who is Boggy B, exactly? The plot thickens.

Not sure, but apparently Bloopy wrote a sequel(not really, he writes good poetry though):
Worms of ages past,
Drowned and killed in the blast.
Burial ground of pink in the sea.
Dying bodies in a heap.
Fallout from a bright red sky.
Didn't you know?
Today's the day you're going to die!
You send your worms to their death.
The rattle of battle until the last breath.
The world on fire and the sound of war.
You keep coming back for more.
Casualties are on the rise.
Your cold heart will be your demise.
Wormers wriggle around in their chairs,
Tapping their keyboards like somebody cares.
Burning through worms like cigarettes,
'Til one team stands up and takes revenge.
No lump in your throat ever felt bigger
Than when you're looking down the barrel of a bazooka.
With the wind, the fighting turns.
A hunger for payback burns.
Don't be fooled by their size,
They've got guns and you're their prize.
From all directions comes a treat.
Exploding sheep, revenge is sweet.
Wormers wriggle around in their chairs,
Tapping their keyboards like somebody cares.
Burning through worms like cigarettes,
'Til one team stands up and takes revenge.

As Rick already said, there's infinite amount of possibility, it's better to just not think about it ;D
