Elite Tutorials: By Crazy & Free
« on: May 27, 2010, 10:38 PM »
Well, what a useless board this has been so far, Free :P It looks more like a TdC forum full of spam rather then a... anything else ;D I said I was gonna add something to this forum some days ago, and I keep my words. I`ll be the first one to add something meaningfull here, and quote what a guy (Antares) at the NNNL boards has as his signature, I find it a bit funny, atleast I did that time after I`d have a few beers:

"Even my clock at morning sounds ''tac-tic'' instead of ''tic-tac''. "

And yes, tactics is a BIG part both for intermediate and elite. You will eventually come to a point where the skill concerning the use of the weps are about even, and what seperates the best players then are two things imo: tactical skills and the difference in creativity. At FB there used to be some boards where people discussed the aspects of every scheme, gave each other tips and what not. I happened to be so smart to save the big guide lines for each scheme, which I found again on my old harddrive. I`m not sure who wrote the guideline/tutorial for Elite, but here it is:

"ELITE Tactics:
ALWAYS HAVE SUPERSHEEP AS YOUR TEAM'S SPECIAL WEAPON!!!
ALWAYS HAVE SUPERSHEEP AS YOUR TEAM'S SPECIAL WEAPON!!!
ALWAYS HAVE SUPERSHEEP AS YOUR TEAM'S SPECIAL WEAPON!!!

The first and probably most important thing you need to think about, is your placement.
A good main guideline is to place two worms at the top out in the open, and 2 covered.
Furthermore, don't place a worm next to where your opponent just placed one. He'll shotgun you, do 50 damage, you'll shotgun him back, and he'll kill you the next turn. However, there's an exception to this. You can doubleteam a worm, meaning you'll place 2 worms close to him so you can kill him before he gets his second turn. However, this gives one of his worms complete freedom, so do this only for tactical locations. When doubleteamed by your opponent, go for the second worm to have it's turn, axe him (50 dmg) and pile with him. This way he'll have to shoot both you and his own worm, leaving you with 25 energy left. This way you'll do 150 damage including a kill. Obviously, try to prevent this when doubleteaming yourself.

What is a tactical location? Considering the lack of movement possibilities, there's only 2 ropes, which usually, you'll want to keep longer than your opponent because it's a great advantage, it's wise to place your worms high where your opponent can't reach you, but you could hit him from up there, or bungee/chute down and go for the kill.

When to use your rope? If you can get the last kill, if you can get a multikill, if your opponent used up his ropes and it gives you a tactical advantage to rope somewhere, if you need to get a worm away and you used all your tele's (It happens..).
Just remember having ropes while your opponent doesn't is probably the biggest advantage you can have.

When to use your special weapon, which should in all cases be a supersheep? Unless you're an elite supersheep flyer, don't use it unless
he's out in the open but unreachable otherwise. A supersheep should be kept for a kill, doing damage with it is just a waste. It does 65 damage, so a good pointer would be going for a 50 energy worm or a drown. If you can get 2 worms with a supersheep, don't hesitate for a second.

Some pointers:
- ALWAYS, ALWAYS HAVE SUPERSHEEP AS YOUR SPECIAL WEAPON
- Watch your placement
- Keep track of turn order
- Save your ropes untill you really need them or they give an advantage worth using it.
- Watch the airstrike delay and get out of the open when your opponent is gonna get them.
- Blow up crates that are really easy for your opponent to get, crates often have usefull weapons, or even a worm select.
- Worm select is god in elites, turn order is very important, your opponent will keep track of it.. Worm select f@#!s it up for him.

Of course these are only basic, there are alot of 'turn by turn'-tactics which are different for everyone. For example I like sacrificing a worm to get a turn order advantage having less worms, I make up for it by doing damage."

Credits to the one who wrote it. It is a very short tutorial, and as the copywriter says, only the very basic of the scheme. But it`s a nice start to creating a discussion on this great scheme, right? :D So, does anyone agree/disagree with anything which have been said in this tutorial, or have something more to add?
Edit: I noticed that the tutorial is abit out of date here, but its still relevant.

Wrong, you can surprise your opponent with a HHG or cows which can deal a whole lot more damage but I consider it a gamble as chances are you won't be able to use them properly.. Supersheep is probably still the most solid special weapon.

This isn't exactly true, by now it's quite a common tactic to pile opponent's worms. You usually pile if you're either at a hiding disadvantage ("oh shit! no more good hides left..") or if your opponent is a really good player and you wanna make sure to deal the damage to him while you can. Of course you can also do it to simply speed up the game lol.
I noticed that the most common result after the piling strategy is that both players have 100 + 50 health left which, for a lower skilled player, is a lot better than going through the "full set".. Hope you get what I mean. You make use of girder blocks and worm rotation here, messing up on either of those will be crucial.

If you can get 2 worms with a supersheep, don't hesitate for a second.
I also wouldn't sign this. There are situations where it's actually good if your opponent has more worms than you, especially in SD when the water is rising. I've seen Elites where one team had an overwhelming advantage worms- and health-wise and still lost because SD f@#!ed them up, especially when out of teleports and/or ropes.

I'd also like to add that it's smart placing a worm (other than the first worm obviously, because of the 1 turn delay) in a position below your opponent's worm where he can't reach you. That way you can use your skunk on him. A skunked worm is practically as good as dead. You usually leave them alone or block them because they'll lose health until they're at 1 anyway.
On the contrary, watch out for skunked opponent worms, they're very likely to rope and deal as much damage as possible (i.E. dyna, sheep, skunk) or use kamikaze from a good position.

Nice compilation Crazy, those are really very basic hints for beginners but if you carve them all into your mind and use them I'm sure you can be a nice match, even against an experienced Eliter.

Yeh ss isnt always the best tool for the job, and it really depends who your playing. Although in most games ss is generally the most useful wep to have, if im playing a really great player then sometimes I may switch weps to suprise his ass, or play super aggressively with cows or hhg.

Tactics in general are entirely subjective to the game at hand. There is no step by step process to winning a game, it all depends on the player, the terrain, and what happens during the game. There are no set procedures to ensure victory, it all depends on the game at hand!

I agree with nial, it is very dificult to make a step by step.

Cmon nino, you shotgun even pussies. :P

This isn't meant to become a step by step guideline how to win any Elite game in the world, it's meant to be a guide for new or unexperienced players explaining the basics of the scheme.

OMG!

I just spent 2 hours making an elite tutorial replay just to find out that typing too much text  into replay makes the replay lag like crazy and moving really really slow. :(

All the hard work down the drain. xD

Need to find motivation to do another one with more simplistic explanation. :/

So here's my first dive into trying to explain the dephts of elite. It's an imaginary elite between Red and Blue team played by me as I explain my thought process with whatever team I'm attacking with.

Text might be out of sync in some parts, but watch it with normal speed and use ESC to pause the game when needed if text is coming down too fast. Try to stay focused the whole time.

You can make the chatbox bigger by pushing CTRL+DOWN ARROW.

The best way to learn Elite is to watch alot of replays, especially your own ones (I've watched total of closer to 1000 Elite replays alone) and try to think with a mindset of "having most possible options open at any given situation."

And most importantly, to practise, practise, practise.

I promise you, once you start to see the depth and beauty of elite, you will love the scheme.

There's more stuff to come, stay tight.

Please leave me some comments or questions and feedback. It's first time I'm trying to do replay-tutorial so if you know how to make it better, let me know. :)

Download the replay and enjoy!
