Title: Finger Rollers - Keyboards
Post by: kartious on April 24, 2013, 10:05 PM
Hello

I am trying to learn how to finger roll but my keyboard is rubbish so It would be great if you told me the keyboards you use to play WA so I can buy a one.

Any advice also is welcome.

Or you can not take the easy way and not be a noob and learn with 1 finger . . . .

P.s if your space doesn't work well, hit it HARDER

Maciej, do you perhaps have something that documents that you, indeed, use finger roll? Perhaps a video of some sort??

This is the only video I've seen of someone actually finger rolling

Anyone who 'finger rolls' using 2+ spacebars is a cheater, in my opinion. I have no respect for this fake kind of roping.

And I've heard all the justifications for it so don't bother arguing. Do what dub-c says (who is an excellent roper) and learn to rope the proper way.

I will argue, sorry Joe ;O. Key remapping should be allowed, and I imagine WA 4.0 might have this programmed into the game. It doesn't change how the game accepts inputs, and finger rolling on a sufficiently sensitive space is the same as doing it with two spaces. It's not even clear finger rolling gives you an advantage in the end, I feel that one finger might give you more control, since there are fewer moving appendages to think about (or at least, this depends on the person).

Hey kartious, welcome to TUS :)

If you're serious about learning finger-rolling, please be careful because you will find a few scripts in your way which will make it so easy but they are totally cheats. Learning the actual finger-rolling requires a lot of time and patience. Please read here (https://www.tus-wa.com/forums/announcements/using-autohotkey-is-considered-as-a-cheat-9118/) for more info.

The argument you just gave is exactly the one I had in mind when I said don't bother arguing. Not that my arguments are ironclad, but you won't convince me that 2 space finger rollers don't have an unfair advantage.

There are no space bars as sensitive/controllable as two separate buttons. With a single space bar, sure you can get a few fast taps, but it's 100 times harder to control than if you're using two buttons.

Part of that is because with 1 spacebar, the downstroke of one finger can prevent the spacebar from lifting from your previous space press if your timing is off. That doesn't happen with 2 buttons because the buttons aren't physically connected. This limitation also affects your timing.

The proof that 2 space "finger rolling" gives an unfair advantage is in the results. Just compare a "finger roller" with a 1 space roper - you don't have to know who is who because it's immediately obvious. Arguing about how WA accepts keyboard inputs and about ideal sensitive spaces, etc, is irrelevant. In theory maybe it works the same, but in practice two-space "finger rollers" have a huge advantage.

You said you doubted if FRing helps. Having the ability to do fast, reliable tapping definitely gives you an advantage in some situations. If you're doing a scroll close to the roof with 1 space bar, for example, you pretty much have to slow down or stop if you get too close to the roof with too much speed, because you can't trust that the spacebar will register, and you'll end up hitting your head on the roof. "Finger rollers" just spam some taps and keep scrolling. I remember watching this exact scenario with barman rr'ing with his last worm in a clanner, where his worm suddenly got really close to the ceiling during a fast scroll, but instead of slowing down he pulled a bunch of impossible taps out of his ass to save his scroll, without losing horizontal speed, with his worm practically touching the roof. That same move would be pretty much impossible, and at least far too risky to attempt, with one space bar. And it would be a lot more difficult to time properly with the above-mentioned limitation of having a single spacebar that is physically one piece. I'm not saying barman isn't a great roper, but when you watch something like that, you are forced to think "wow, he has an unfair advantage".

In the video I posted, the guy can tap pretty fast, but he still can't trust his space bar enough to scroll with a short rope. Using two spacebars eliminates that uncertainty.

On a side note, there are some remappers that will accept both inputs, even if the two spaces are pressed at the same time, and input one space right after the other. But you're not talking about those programs.

I can finger roll with my padded space as fast as any finger roller can with two, and I'm not even a finger roller. The only difference you could argue is that it takes more time to learn fr with one space, I really don't know.

Finger rolling rarely gives an advantage in control; saving yourself from hitting the roof is something that's only related to spacebar sensitivity. It does give you an advantage in taps, but that's about it, doesn't result in faster RR times or more controlled/efficient roping. The situation you're describing sounds too rare, you can pretty much never just spam taps and have things work out better than controlled taps would.

Many of the top RRers have used one space in any case, so I don't see that your claim of two spaces having an advantage is vindicated by the evidence. Maybe there is a slight advantage for those starting off, but at the higher levels it doesn't really make a difference.

Well, I am using a kinda cheap keyboard (maybe that's why I am so noob in rope), but even if I would like to use my spacebar to rope with, I couldn't because my spacebar with one of my arrow keys has keylock. So I use two keys on my keyboard with has no keylock with my arrows and they are not so important for chatting.

I think it's more easier to rope with little keys. And I think that you don't need immediately to buy a new keyboard, you can learn the basics with a cheap one too. All you need is practicing a lot and nerves :D

For example before I started fingerrolling, I was playing for 3 years continuously with 1 key (but not the spacebar), and it took me to change my style about 2-3 months.

using 1 or 2 spaces doesn't make a difference

the 2nd space will only shoot a rope if the 1st one is released, much like what would happen when using only 1 space

Logitech G15. U won't need any remapper because the spacebar is pretty sensitive and it has no significant keylock.

Like always I'd recommend the model I myself have been using since January 2012, Logitech Illumitaned. Note that it's rather expensive, though. I'm sure there are keyboards that are at least half as cheap and perform similarly well.
You can see a video of myself roping on that keyboard in Masta's post (thanks). That should also be an example that finger rolling doesn't necessarily involve remapping your space bar to two different keys.

Alright, maybe for the top 5 ropers it doesn't make much difference..  you may have convinced me of that, but I still think that for 99.9% of people it's an unfair advantage.

Anyway thanks for keeping the responses civil. I went over the top a bit. Finger rolling (2 spaces) has bothered me for a while, but never enough to say something about it, until now I guess.

So going back to the topic - kartious, I myself never bothered to buy these expensive keyboards just for roping. I just bought some cheap 5-10$ worth keyboard and modded my spacebar with putting little flat plastic square under it (you have to adjust it couple of times to get a proper effect though). It contributed in very high responsivity of spacebar making it easier to control the taps and also I gained comparable speed to double space scripts. So, if you don't want to spend much money you can modify your regular keyboard. :)
Title: Re: Finger Rollers - Keyboards
Post by: StepS on April 27, 2013, 10:47 AM
the problem is that most keyboards' buttons are way too "huge" in height. I can't understand why there aren't as much flat keyboards as there are on laptops (I know, it's to economize space on laptops, but such keyboards are really better even on their own). I once tried a "huge" keyboard again. space was terrible indeed. this is why I always roped fast with 1 finger and 1 space on my laptop. :) and its in a lot better condition than it would be on any other standard KB (bigger amplitude gives bigger imbalance, thus the serving period is less). it's still perfect in fact, but I've got a new laptop already.
on the other side, typing on the "huge" keyboards is also very bad, however this may just be my own experience since I'm already used to flat keyboard for years.

Logitech ultra flat.  Great low profile keys.  Tried media elite and g15 and stuck with this for the last 5 or so years.  All other keyboards' keys seem too big and bulky once you get used to low profile laptop style keys.

Anubis STFU your the only one i know that can pick up a kb off the curb dust it off after 5 yrs and make the leet feel like noobs in a 10 min warmer.... finger rolls are a dedicated skill yes, but ropeing in itself is a skill that is learned over time put in and dedicated.  Yes some people learn finger rolls and some learn cross handed but at the end of the day its what you can do with it. i know some one finger tappers that can put rollers to shame. but then i know some rollers that got "style" that can never be touched by the one finger tappers. My great friend volrin was a roller that even to this day on a cold night below 0 couldnt be touched by the greatest. but it all depends on what you can do with it. i know on days im upset from work and whats going on in the day i cant rope for nothing, but on a good day i can keep up with the best. Avirex will start to make fun of him, while MonkeyIsland says "yeh, they might have invented worms, BUT I INVENTED THE WORLD!!!"
Ano will post "buiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!" and peja will wank on nino's pics.

The game is over, if i forgot someone just PM me, i will include you in the story.

lmao!!

When you're hearing a joke from a person using a foreign language you have to do the exercise and jump back in time, to when you were young and that shit was funny.

Unless you're also from somewhere else.

I`m using A4 Tech KL-7MU. Its the best keyboeard i ever had and played!
Oh, also i have to say that its the only keyboard i ever had. Oh yeah, also i dont use any fingerrolling. Onefingerman ftw! :D

Its all this thread about - nothing. As many players - as many differnet opinions.
First learn fingerroll on any keyboard you have. Understand you need that or you dont. When u`ll get used to it - buy any keyboeard with small flat keys, for fast respond and enjoy your roping skills :)
So that`s my tip. From a guy who never even tryed that stuff and who think he is good @1finger spacing and prouds of that :D lel.

Amazing, that.

Anyway, I ordered the Steelseries 6gv2 a couple of days ago.
Fell for the cherry black switches - will let you know how I get on with it, first mechanical keyboard.

awesome, I've been tempted to try that exact keyboard ever since it was released, but never took the plunge.  I'm really interested to hear what you think of it, if you're willing to share whenever.

Certainly.
Should arrive before next Thursday.
Going to have to be accepting of the fact that I will be nowhere near the old roping standard but if I can't blame the keyboard then it's all good.

I've recorded a movie of myself pretending to rope and finger rolling on a old school machine on an interactive exhibition during Slot Art Festival (my friend's youtube channel).

lol bonhart...

too bad you didnt have the camera focused on a computer, with a replay of you ttrring aswell.. that would make the video epic...

(funny moment, i was originally going to say you would have to personally know someone who knows how to rope who can actually be roping off camera on the real KB, while u mimic the moves.. lol.. forgot about replays some how)

:D
