Title: TUS Mobile Application
Post by: MonkeyIsland on February 25, 2021, 11:32 AM
Alright guys, time to work! I've decided to polish my mobile app skills. Instead of writing small "testing" applications why not channel that effort into TUS. So it's official, one TUS app coming right up for both Android and iOS devices.

What features would you like to see in TUS app?

Cool! TUS works pretty poor on my smartphone in browser, it's really tricky to post something..

I think the app would be good to notify about stuff happening on TUS. For example, I would like to receive notifications if someone uploaded a new scheme on TUS. But this is me, most people I believe wouldn't like to receive notifications about that. So, the app should let you choose which notifications do you want to receive. Most people would like to receive notifications about Private/Direct messages or replies in forum posts. Others would like to be notified about cups or tournaments happening. Others would like to be notified about new challenges or even new maps. I believe the notifications would be a great feature to an app version of The Ultimate Site of Worms.

Honestly not even sure what would make a great TUS mobile app, is it going to be a clone of the whole thing with a few things tweaked or aiming to be different in a big way?

I guess part of me is thinking functionality should be limited in the sense reporting games and stuff would be kind of useless in the way you play from your computer and have the replay files on your computer. So i'm thinking it should focus on the things like Shoutbox, forums, statistics like standings, challenges, awards, etc.

Maybe even the mobile app could have the ability to send and receive @mentions similar to Discord(I don't know how it works so this may be a silly request lol), so if someone replies to you(by quoting you, or @yourname) you would see a notification?

Apart from that maybe something will come to me later lol.

I'm more leaning to make it for members. I don't see any use for a guest at the moment.

TUS website will also be updated for browsers. Separate thing from the app.

Yes one of the key features will be the notifications. Members will have the option to choose what part of TUS they are interested to receive notifications from.

what technology will you use to develop it? I am just curious :D
I used to code for Android via Java but now there's Flutter which uses Dart.

@Komo,
It won't be a clone but I'll be setting up mentions and a notification system for that. I'll be updating the TUS website as well.

Sure.

Interesting xD

Only internet access obviously. (I have no interest of spying on anyone, if that's your concern)

I guess, QR can contain all needed data but the replay file of course. Also reports can stay not published until the winner come to TUS and back up the report with replay files, game ID can be used to juxtapose a replay with its report if the winner offer a bunch of replays to TUS. Replays should not be transferred to the site in this case, only IDs, no need to create unneccesary traffic. This feature would be useful to help people who keep forgetting to report, or who they played with or what scheme it was etc.

I started to learn web coding, i want climb this industry and maybe can be useful for TUS one day.

I agree. It should be extensive. If someone reports a game against me, make a better record than me in a challenge, if a tournament I joined has started, or if someone posts on a thread I have posted, I would like to be notified.

Maybe a better looking DM interface for mobile would be nice? You know, something people can actually use. Like instead of creating a discord server or whatsapp group, people should be able to use clan/group dms here. Maybe DMs itself need some polishing, to allow things like group messages.

Btw a wild idea, but I gotta ask since TUS can snatch data from replay such as the map, chat etc. How about automatically creating MP4 GIFs of some replays by using WA's export video feature? Imagine you sending a TTRR run for a challenge, TUS automatically creates an MP4 for mobile users to watch. If it is possible to extract audio too, you could even have TUS YT channel for all the replays.

Right after a match WA shows a QR code you scan with a smartphone and get instant report on TUS  ::)

Maybe an even easier way is to have a bot like HostingBuddy to host TUS games and it can report automatically on behalf of winner. A bot hoster can also prevent things such as map-whoring, or even avoiding if we also put matchmaking into the equation. You start matchmaking, if you get a match, you're sent a password for the game the bot will host. So, no outsiders, only league players, and their friends possibly as spectators.

Hell, why stop with mobile app, maybe a PC app with features of TUS and a snooper.

Obviously, I don't expect everything I say to become reality. I am already grateful for what we have. I am just brainstorming. :D

Great ideas. But in case you didn't notice, league is practically dead for years now. I hope TUS mobile app can make ppl come back, but realistically - it's against the odds at this point. Seems like pretty big project, MI should ask himself is this really worth that much of his time. Hope I'm wrong about all, honestly.

An ability to watch replay somehow would be great for sure. If you can make it happen then having a call to action for voting would be awesome.
Other than that I think the chatting system would be nice on mobile.

dead? u wot m8? at the time of writing this, this is the most recent game (https://www.tus-wa.com/leagues/game-226620/), done yesterday.
dead is too strong of a word here, inactive is what you might be looking for, relative to previous years
i wish someone (i might too, not sure how to do it properly tho) could do some more ambitious statistic analysis for arguments like this

someone would need to develop a way to convert replay files to video files without recording them. theoretically you can get a png sequence of the replay, but to automate getting a video file (with audio as well) is something no one has challenged yet afaik

Sensei, you are correct about the time and effort. It IS a pretty big project. The app itself takes a lot of time to develop. That aside, a lot of current TUS code must be tweaked. Last time I did a major update on TUS was back in 2012 and lots of stuff are outdated. For example TUS doesn't look good in a mobile screen and I have to make a brand new theme as well. There's no notification system, so that must be coded as well.

Regarding the leagues, let's assume the league is completely dead. TUS still survives as a community. If I disable leagues right now, there are still other members using TUS for different purposes. I don't look at this project as a way to boost league activity but a boost to W:A community itself.

I like the idea of converting a replay to video. I'll check it out, but if everything goes right, it would be the last part of the update.

Really great ideas by Triad. If match making become a reality I would play more leagues. In League of Legends I played ranked games a lot, many hours per day (I rarely played for fun, I used to play like more than 10 solo queue games per day). In WA I really don't have much patience to play ranked games. The very good part of WA for me is the creativity it brings. In League of Legends there is not much creative things you can do. You can make fan art, but that will not be inside the game. You can play with champions with bizarre builds or bizarre roles but nothing too creative that you can see inside the game as WA.

Many league players were not very cool to me too and many were very against new schemes they only thought about leagues and nothing more. If you don't play leagues you are noob, if you edit one thing in the TUS scheme, you are noob. And that made me avoid playing TUS leagues. I know many players who don't like TUS so much due to this kind of behavior of the players. However with time I started to enjoy TUS and see other aspects of the site such as a very good platform for schemes with the best actual editor (better than the game editor AND SchemeEddy), it is the only site I know which has scheme icons, this is really a great feature, the website is beautiful and well organized, I like the communities, the maps don't receive bullying tags like WMDB "UNIMAGINATIVE" (this is the worst tag and useless of all), etc, etc.

I believe with new updates coming people will start playing WA again. Like many people I see are playing again. Now with the custom terrains it is more fun to play in random maps.

If 4-5 ppl are active constantly, that doesn't mean league is active.
Few years back you had competitive level through the roof with dozens of active members playing on daily basis. Yeah, it is dead right now, in my eyes. Hopefully MI will bring back some players with new ideas he got. My previous comment may seem negative to someone, but most of the ppl around here knows I want TUS to shine again.

When you put it like that, it makes lot of sense. Let us know if we can help in any way.

That's quite reassuring thank you.

So in that case....

Skimmed through other advices before giving the following advice.

My advice may seem a bit ambitious, expensive and complex? But could it be possible to integrate the games replay folder to the TUS App through some cloud technology? For example: When I am done with 1 roper, the game is saved on to my device as well as my computer. So I simply click report and select the game from the cloud folder and upload. The game files are pretty small, and shouldn't be much of an issue I guess, and the replay wouldn't be stored on the cloud indefinitely.

This same method could be used for other aspects as well...

Have you ever thought about branching TUS out to other games? Even other games in the franchise if not completely other things?
Title: Re: TUS Mobile Application
Post by: MonkeyIsland on March 03, 2021, 06:12 PM
Thought about it? Yes but never felt like doing it. The power of W:A comes from replays, custom schemes and maps. It's customizable and TUS uses those feature as its fuel.  On other worms game we don't have this flexibility.

A non-WA game that could benefit from TUS fully is perhaps Assetto Corsa. Has replays, custom tracks, and allow different racing disicplines (schemes). Races as league games, time trials as challenges, pretty much covers everything TUS has.

Nice Idea for a Mobile Application, but remember this...

as being a Mobile veteran (a Mobile Gaming user before becoming a PC Gaming user), be careful of some CURSED ads.
Some of them are scams or even Trojans, most of them are from Google Play than Apple's App Store because Google somehow prefers money and abusing people (yeah, Apple is greedy to but is not extremely incompetent and insane like Google).

So be careful and good luck with this project. I'm waiting the final results like the rest of the TUS.

would you consider a new design for the main tus website which is easier for new players to understand as feel like the UX is a barrier to entry for new players.

could this co inside with the TUS app?

I have another idea for the app: make it easy to appear the scheme icon as a button or something like that. I had this idea when I transformed the Drive for Weapons gif sbs made into a Whatsapp sticker. The gif fitted very beautifuly as a sticker, maybe even more beautiful than the original size. This would be great to ask people for a game, you simply select the Scheme Icon you want and it appears as a sticker to people, so that they automatically have an idea of what the scheme being hosted is about.

I don't know how to share the sticker without sending the sticker via whatsapp. If there is a way, I'll need to discover.

That would be amazing, TUS with several artworks as buttons. I wonder if sbs would be the official artist or maybe more people of this game community. Who would accept this and dedicate some time facing this challenge?

There are screen record apps you can use on mobile phones, simply record your screen while viewing the sticker, then edit the video, from there you could modify it to a mp4 video or gif and share it.

I opened whatsapp web program installed in my computer, found a conversation with the sticker, recorded the animation using oCam program (using the entire screen of my computer), then I cropped and cut the gif. Perhaps the quality is a bit lower than the original (I attached it here too), but at least now you can have a notion:

I maybe got an idea but I don’t know if it applies to your specific projects for making native mobile apps.

Since TUS has become somewhat of a central go-to point for everything related WA community I was thinking that other WA related projects could integrate some of the data coming from TUS. I was thinking that the mobile apps might take advantage of the backend that already exists for TUS. And maybe some of that API could be exposed to third-party consumers.

For example retrieve general user data from TUS like clan and country or also use an account on TUS to sign-in on other sites (OAuth). Of course the websites that could make use of this already exist and I’m not assuming many websites coming up in the future but oh well … that’s our community, right? It’s all for the funs. I’m owning CWT and WL and I would certainly use that API.
