I'm confused.. I've really tried to understand the difference between cups and tournaments. What's the difference? When I look at the basic information, I just get the same info for both. I'm very new to this stuff so please explain :(

I think I understand that leagues are seasonal and there are "all time" ranks too. It's all about points, right? But cups are basically one-time tournaments where people compete with each other to climb the ladder to the top, so to speak? But aren't tournament the same concept?

Confusing :(

I've never really cared about sports either so I guess that sort of throws me into the dark here as well.

#1
tourney: ppl come to partytime/ropers heaven and play their pairs till the end. it will take 3-4 hours
cup: moar global bs. ppl get in groups and looking for opponent in ag. once all games played on group stage, playoff starts. cup can take half year or more because ppl dont come into same place to play and registration take few days or longer

easiest explain I can imagine, hope you get it xD

well said impo xD, I'd like to add that when looking for ur opponents during cup, u need to send them private messages or write in the cup topic to let ur opponent know the dates and times when u r available to play with him/her

Conny

So basically they're the same, it's just that cups suck.

A cup has 2 stages: Group stage and Knockout stage. People who joined that cup get paired into groups, 2 people from each group go to the knockout stage.
A tournament is basically a cup but without the group stage, so people who joined get paired directly into the knockout stage.

Look at the cups and tournament as a one time event. For example check this cup. It has been finished. You can see how everything went from groups to knockouts. (groups stage are below knockouts due to importance) When a cup or tourney finishes, the winner receives points and appropriate medal for that cup.
Due to massive misunderstandings: MonkeyIsland refers to an island not a monkey. I would be a monkey, if my name was IslandMonkey meaning a monkey who is or lives on an island. MonkeyIsland is an island which is related to monkeys. Also there's been a legend around saying MonkeyIsland is a game. So please, think of me as an island or a game.

I see!
Even though my opinion is irrelevant; Isn't it pretty useless to have a grouping stage at all? The only time I can see manual groping to be good is when you do 2vs2 since people might want to choose their own partners.

group stage rocks  :)

In tournaments you can get paired against a really good player in the very first round. In cups the knockout stage only starts after the group stage is done. If you finish 1st in the group stage you'll get an easier opponent.

Husk

also...

in tournament knockout stage is better than group stage + knockout stage, because everyone who signed up are alrdy in same meeting

but in cups, group stage + knockout stage is better than knockout stage alone: let's say we have 32 players who randomly check the tus private messages and cup topic, and 50% of players are slackers, to the rest 50% who are active it's very difficult to get ur games done with ur opponent if he is slacking... so in group stage if u r active, there's a better chance u will atleast find one of ur opponents to play. when the group stage deadline is over, u will get advanced to knockout stage, and here all who were advanced to knockout stage are like u, they try to get their games done. I am sure some people are pulling their hair trying to read this cos my bad english

Conny

Bad players wouldn't win against a better player, though. Unless something really weird happens during the match. Right? Therefor there would always be a better player higher up the pyramid. So in my mind it doesn't matter if they get paired manually or automatically, there would always be better people at the top.

I suppose it could be argued that the less skillful players will stand a chance to climb the ladder if they face someone in their own level, but eventually they will meet that strong player anyway and most surely loose. Then there's the issue of time. Since I can imagine it takes quite a bit of time to put together such groups.

Then again.. my opinion is irrelevant. Just speaking my mind here. The main question has been answered.
