Starting first on your own pick?
« on: July 04, 2012, 10:18 PM »
Players should be allowed the option of going first on their own pick if they want it.  So if this was a rule: Add Rounds 2+ to every scheme, and if the scheme picker starts 2nd, they are allowed to surrender immediately so that they start on the next round.

If I had the option of going 2nd or going 1st, I'd almost always prefer going first, so why not let this be an advantage on one's own pick?  It's only because of W:A's limitations that we can't choose who goes first.

Thoughts? Discuss.

Own pick is kind of an advantage already, why would we double that with this? Also, I wouldn't call it "limitation", it's the fairest if it's random.
You can discuss with your actual opponent, but I don't think it'd be a good one as a rule.

Being 1st in some schemes is an advantage, but at the same time, being 2nd is an advantage in some ways/schemes as well.

A rule I would personally like to add, i've thought it for years never bothered to mention it:

Don't you just hate when you get 1st turn in a game, only for the player to immediately drop, then when you rehost they get the 1st turn instead and then no one drops or lags again...

I feel like, if you were randomly 1st, in the 1st game, you should get to be 1st in the rehost as well, I actually personally believe there are some players in the past & present who have dropped on purpose immediately because they didn't get 1st turn, funnily enough most of the players I suspect are Southern American players, I never seem to have this problem with other players, so this could just be down to me being a bit paranoid and a coincedence they may all innocently just have bad connections or something.

This idea would cause too many problems.  Prankster makes a great point, picking the scheme and knowing you'll go first is a bit devious, especially for bng and elite.  Whether or not you may think going first is an advantage, it objectively is an advantage in schemes where you place worms and "claim" territory, like bng and elite.  Keep in mind if you're picking that scheme, you're probably making and looking at the map long before the game starts.  This would also cause a rat-races to picking schemes in playoffs.  Like you'd feel obligated to either pick bng or elite because of that inherent advantage to going first.  Keep it random.  This has never been in issue.

Yep.

I liked the other rule additions franz, cause it keeps things simple. Any new addition has to be really worth it IMO (that is, when there is widespread belief in the necessity of such a rule). For complicated 89-pages rulebooks I'll stick to wargames TYVM  ;D

(that is, when there is widespread belief in the necessity of such a rule).

What happens when there is a necessity and most people can't see it?

I don't agree with this new suggestion for a rule though, changes the way schemes are played.
MonkeyIsland, my friend, I know your english is terrible and your understanding of society limited. However, in real life, people attack and humiliate others without the use of a single bad word. They even go to war with lengthy politeness. You can't base the whole moderation philosophy of a community based on the use of bad words and your struggle with sarcasm and irony. My attack to Jonno was fully justified and of proper good taste.

Komodo will post a rant, you will ask for further irrelevant details, shy will go kermit, SPW will plead for the return of TEL and MI will pay for another years' worth of bandwidth.

Joking aside, insiders have always had a bigger say in things than the 'anonymous' mass of players. MI knows where the good input come from. I have no doubt that necessary fixes will get approved.

Other than that, it's not worth discussing. It's a practical guideline I suggested: keep things as simple as possible. Not really worth going scholastic about is it?

Agreed with Prankster, I dont see any real need to add this rule and I could see it causing some problems, potentially.

Random starts are good imo, Maybe set a rule where ur obligatios is to set the cup to 3 or 5 so if u want a rm of the scheme u'll be sure to start next round, u no sometimes when u play with some1 u like and know well they dont rly care whats ur pick after u play their, or they dont mind if u want to change ur pick when u lost the scheme they picked, so this could be useful s;
