Leagues General / Re: TEL goes Pro!

Hm, this offer is for the winner of TEL playoffs, not the season, right? Maybe I could manage to play, but I'm guessing I won't even be able to find anyone during the hours I'm on.

Congrats all, yeah Chuvash did well, he's gotten much better at elite, his cows are pretty hard to deal with especially for those who don't play inter as much ;0. I feel like franz and Crash could've been top 3 if they were in peak form for each match, but it's hard to have time these days. I didn't actually expect Almog to be top 3, he's done very well, maybe I've just been gone from 1v1 elite too long to notice his progress.

Random played great, though I'll have to get some revenge against him at some point, maybe next year since I'm going to have to be in intermediate mode for a while. SPW too, he almost came back against me from 0-2. On my own performance, I'm reasonably happy, but I never managed to get sufficiently warm for SD scenarios, I did some unthinkable things during SD, I wish I'd just been practicing for a longer period prior to EAC. I think no one should feel down if they didn't finish as high as they hoped though, everyone here is damn skilled.

Very big thanks to SPW and Random, without this tourney I wouldn't have had any motivation to play elite right now, it's kind of a nice way to force all us busy old schoolers to play each other. It's pretty amazingly generous for SPW to sacrifice so much cash for us, so huge thanks there, I just hope this isn't a lot of money for him. And props to Random for getting some real life trophies, very awesome of you.

It was a pretty big time commitment, especially because I'd usually have to warm up before matches each week as well, so  maybe next year we could find a way to reduce the amount of time it takes, like 2 opponents per week. Doing that might also keep people warmer, since I don't think many of us could stay in shape throughout the entire 16-week period. But yeah, thanks for organizing guys.

SPW, would Sunday work? 19 or 20 GMT is usually my best time.

Thanks Kory, well I re-uploaded Fab16 to replace the current one, but I didn't see it get confirmed yet, I think MI has to do that.

I just tried downloading a PNG version of Nail 04 to re-save it as a BIT... doesn't even work, just gives me a blank PNG. I'm not exactly sure how to correct those files, if anyone has clean versions of any of those maps, please upload 'em. So far:

Lukz missed the date; I would've appreciated a heads up so I wouldn't have to wait. What times are doable now? I can probably do next Wed/Thurs/Fri at 19 or 20 GMT.

So Lukz, I'm not really sure about your confirmation... we can try to do Fri at 19 GMT, just let me know what the deal is by Thursday I guess? And again, let me know if there are any other time ranges that work aside from around 19 GMT.

Maps / Re: Elite maps? Random or Elaborated?
October 02, 2013, 06:43 AM
Random maps just need to be chosen well; if you can get across the map in one turn then they're probably too simple. You definitely want to have a number of peaks and valleys so that mobility is reduced. On very complex maps, usually you can walk almost anywhere with ease, random maps help add variation to this, and make rope use a bit more strategic.

I definitely think you need to play well on both to be a complete player, on randoms you just need to think about placement a lot more. With fewer places to hide, you need to balance a number of things: having the best locations on the map (the spots that seem like they'll withstand BnG the best, as well as offer good hides to BnG from), having access to the best high ground for SD, having enough close worms to reinforce yourself, having some open worms to attack with (or possibly a worm for skunking), and especially having enough worms hidden away so you don't risk getting pummeled immediately.

On random maps, you really have to formulate a plan of attack, and this is almost entirely absent from many complex maps, where it's always at least an option to hide away and BnG without ever attempting to reach your opponent. There are many more instances where you can stop thinking during complex map games, but not so much for randoms.

Lukz, if none of those times work for you, what about later hours like 6-8 GMT? Most nights are doable for me around then.
