Whats the "contacts" on YouTube all about?

These random channels keep adding me as a "contact"

I just received another one from this channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/MusicRussiaTV

"MusicRussiaTV added you as a contact
MusicRussiaTV has added you as a contact. You can either add this contact to your address book or ignore it. "

What's that all about? Is there any point in having them as a contact? Is it an automated thing or is someone actually trying to contact me or what?

Impossible

youtube remove friends feature and put contacts instead.

No, think about it, why would they add me as a contact, they don't know me, I don't know them, I just wanna find out if it's just an automated spam thing for them to advertise their product (more than likely) or if it's a serious friend request from whoever runs that channel?(Less than likely lol).
