Can someone explain how the ranking system actually works on this site? Looking down the list I can't really understand why some players are higher / lower than others given their records, does anyone know what the actual algorithm is?

If the lower ranked player wins, his new rank is both players' ranks summed up and divided by 2. The higher ranked player doesn't move in ranking unless the opponent gets above him. There's also Elo-based rating system (http://www.igl.net/rating.html). Sort the list by "skill" to see the true ranks
