Leadbelly played a lot of folk tunes, but many of these songs are just traditional folk tunes, with no known author.  Gallow's pole, later played by zepplin; midnight special, later played by CCR; house of the rising sun, later played by the animals, are all traditional american folk songs that originated before him.  Leadbelly's guitar playing is awesome, I love how he plays gallows pole, his take on that song is awesome.  No doubt he transformed these folk tunes with his playing, and no wonder he heavily influenced the stones and zeppelin.  The man was rock and roll before rock and roll.
