Promotion to the public ..! But ...
« on: June 04, 2015, 01:59 PM »
Hi guys, what an interesting topic ...

While It would be great to see more new people coming into the game, I think we first look at our own community!
In my brief week or so back on AG after a couple of years, I've noticed that Ag is swarmed with players that only spam out shoppers (Anybody who says 'shoppa' will be shot on sight) and big rr's thanks to their one and only friend, HostingBuddy! Clanners seem to be becoming even more rare, and tus singles games seem to be by the hand full.

On a small note of late, I have been letting people I dont know join, moreso newer players when I host rrtt games, and show them that roping is *hip* and *cool* and theres a lot more to be said about ropers/rrs/warmers etc. It saddens me a little that a lot of these players quit my host after one turn or say these maps are too hard etc but every so often an impression is made, maybe enough to make them strive to become a roping SEXBOSS. But alas, I am only one man!

I have been talking with one or two other ropers in getting more tournaments going, particularly in the area of roping. Even bringing back a glorious rebirth of rrkit or something similar. Would be good to promote these schemes to newer players, as roping seems to be a skill that may become lost when our senior members start you know ... getting married and other grown up things, and forsaking their roping roots, how dare they.

Hell I might even take on an apprentice when I get back on full roping form.

So yeah, as individuals we need to get talking to our noobier members, show them the wonderful world of WA (and cough no bias roping cough). I'm sure similar posts have been made in the past, but well, yeah.

As far as general promotion of the game, I think the only way of filling up WA with players again would be for steam to take it rejuvenate it and re-release it. Anybody here work for steam and conveniently also goes golfing every Sunday with Team17's CEO? ;)

Just a random post with random thoughts. Ciao :)

New generations... or are we to blame for anything?

In the old days, I'd be amazed whenever I joined a skilled roping game...

Edit: Don't be selfish LH!  :D Not only roping is suffering the lack of decent games...

Insightful and informative!

Not sure what this blame is you .. mentioned ... something ... *shrugs*?
I'm talking specifically about roping and getting more people roping. Nothing more.

i agree... there gotta be more public hosts with classical schemes for sure, not only roping but bng, elite and everything else. perhaps even stop singles league and leave only clanners, it could quite possibly change things i believe...

Agreed.

A lot of people are often greeted with rules or kick. I don't blame for not sticking around then.
Good initiative, LH, sir :)

I've met Shopper players who don't even know what kind of scheme Roper is :o There are so many schemes that some of the classics have been forgotten. And if league players play only league games, who would host a pro roping game?

I should get myself more into roper myself and so should other people really, there is probably a level of intimidation taking effect here as well which prevent the non "pro" players wanting to join.

Maybe it would be a good idea to create some "Ropers for noobs" games ?

Just a thought.

Intimidation and straight up not feeling welcome is a big part of people not branching out. A huge barrier for people is not knowing HOW to engage in new things especially if met with rules they have not learned.

If there was a convenient way to get people to join games named something like "Roper tutorial" or any hosted game for the nature of teaching newer players something, that'd be nice.

I try to vocalize about the less basic schemes that provoke mastery (roper, ZaR, TTRR, etc), and although I'm new to roping in general, it's not that hard to get shopper players to try new things once communicated to.

Joining shopper games and inviting them to play is an easy way to get more attention. You cannot wait in a hosted game of Roper and wait for fish to bite-- many who enter cannot even rope (randoms who mistake it for a Normal match or something), or already have had plenty experience with the scheme.

I'm sure this is an echo of many other voiced opinions on this site, but alas, I am a noobie here. Just my two cents. I'll do what I can to get roping more attention and therefore potentially more people wanting to play together/eventually clan ;)

Yeah I get the feeling some of our older members don't really play with people they don't know which kind of makes it hard unless you're aware of tus, and for a long time, I would have been the same. But even recently people I don't know that join my host, see a rope race map appear, freak the f@#! out and cheese it.

I've also tried being like "hey, wanna try some rope race?" - this usually ends with a "nah, rr is too hard" and a quick escape or ever worse, silence and a quick escape (although that could be also down to language barrier ... I hope ...).

So these players see the host named ttrr in this instance, and still join regardless, which shows at least some willingness to see what it is. But 95% like I said, leave instantly. A part of me just think that this generation of gamers are a little less patient and want instant return on game effort, and schemes like roping take to long to master? *shrugs*.

Id have no problem hosting some rr tutorials on ag, but I get the feeling it might be similar. Just trying to think of little things I can do on WN. Even if I was able to get through to one person a day and show them roping shit and they get all excited and wormgasm, that would be worth it I think. But I dunno, open to suggestions.

I guess even for leagues, putting a bot in Ag that spams tus league/addresss/details etc every 3 minutes or something might get everyone aware if they're already not, but I'm sure somebody has tried that already.

And yes im roping bias, im greedy and horrible ;) but what I'm saying applies to all schemes sweh sweh sweh.
