WORMNET and Internet Data Usage
« on: July 20, 2014, 12:37 PM »
We all have smartphones nowadays and we're well aware that depending on where you surf on the net, the ammount of megabytes used may vary. Most of us have limited usage, like say 1Gb a month, that's why you've to watch out for it.

But how many Internet data is being used when we are playing in wormnet?

Of course, a big rr map will take a lot more of data usage than an elite map. I'm creating this thread because my router died yesterday and as a resort I used my phone as a modem,  via USB Tethering.

My surprise is that after 10 games played, I checked how many MB would cost that and it was only like 10/15MB? What?  For almost 2hours worming online?
I thought, "well I used to play this with a 56ks modem ":D but still, is the data usage that low in wormnet? Does my phone operator not count the full internet data that Wormnet uses? What's the trick here...

I want to make this sure before I waste 2GB data in a worms game.

This is a good thing. Now I won't be afraid of worming if there's no wifi around, hehe.

I am using phone net for prevent disconnects. Afaik, the size of the replay = internet data usage for that game. And wormnet, game lobby etc is as same as a IRC data usage. Once played default schemes for 4 hours (bit and lev maps only), while using IRC as snooper. And it only cost me 5 mb. xD

Nice man! xD

Didn't realize that.  :)  Makes sense

No, lol. Could guess the p/w with wifiway but am too lazy.

The thing that took my attention was that WORMNET barely uses internet data. That's great...

Yes, WormNET and playing WA take very few data, so you can play fine even on 32 kbit/s or below.
However, The Wheat Snooper 2.8 and older will suck a lot of data continuously each 3 seconds, wasting traffic in enormous proportions so you would require 128 kbit/s or faster, and would waste a lot of traffic in a very short time.
Thankfully, The Wheat Snooper 2.9.x fixes that problem. It doesn't refresh the entire userlist with entire information each 3 seconds, but instead does it in a sane way like every other snooper, WA included - it updates the list based on quits, parts, joins and kicks. It's recommended to update if you haven't yet. http://tus-wa.com/?topic=24418

Minus the map if you were hosting. It still doesn't show the whole size, there's a few additional data that doesn't get recorded.
Dec 30 2013 23:59:44 <StepS> windowed mode isn't the only thing you need about frontend
Dec 30 2013 23:59:49 <StepS> you need it to be actually bigger
Dec 31 2013 00:00:13 <StepS> it actually is very small on my 15-inch full HD screen
Dec 31 2013 00:00:25 <StepS> while running at 640x480 or stretched mode makes it fuzzy
Dec 31 2013 00:00:44 <StepS> this problem has been around since the Worms Armageddon's release and no one has even tried to beat it

Do you mean it takes even less data usage if you're the host since you are the one that upload the map?

Well I've been using my phone as a modem via usb for some days now. About 25MB only for 10hours worming in total,  also hosting games. I'm not even gonna bother checking it anymore lol.

Oh right, I forgot about that. Actually no, the map data size you transfer is multiplied by amount of players, excluding yourself. However it's an outgoing data: home networks usually never put caps or fees on the outgoing traffic, however mobile networks are an exception. Many mobile networks still count both outgoing and incoming traffic towards the total.

If you're playing PX games then the libs can be the cause of a bit more data usage, although you only have to download them once. So there the idea that the replay = amount of data usage doesnt hold up, since the replay contains all the libs used in tnat game, but you only downloaded the ones you didn't have locally yet.
