There is a backlog of snapshots on the server again (2 months' worth). I've begun a controlled cleanup. It may impact load somewhat, but hopefully it shouldn't cause downtime or massive lags.

General discussion / Re: Should they release Worms Armageddon v3.8 on Dec. 31st. even if it's unfinished?
January 06, 2018, 08:07 PMQuote from: skunk3 on January 06, 2018, 07:32 AMSo what is the reason why these improvements and bug fixes are not being released?I think the first page of this thread is as close to an answer as you'll probably get for now.
Quote from: skunk3 on January 06, 2018, 07:32 AMWho do you talk with at Team17 and what is the nature of your communication? How often do you communicate? (Just curious!)Sorry, I don't know to which extent I can discuss our communication with Team17.

January 04, 2018, 07:41 PMQuote from: miketh2005 on December 30, 2017, 06:02 PMWill you continue working on the game when 3.8 is released?Yes, of course.
It is really demotivating to implement a feature or even bugfix, then see it waste away for years in a row in secret alpha builds that only a few people see.
We are in agreement, though, that we need to get back to releasing updates frequently. Hopefully this can become reality instead of another "when it's done" deadlock

Quote from: miketh2005 on December 31, 2017, 10:48 AMIf something is buggy due to not being properly tested, yes, I can see the community leaving or being split between versions, but just make sure it's not buggy, eh?Bugs (potential or known) are not what is holding the release back.
Quote from: miketh2005 on December 31, 2017, 10:48 AMI recommend youI recommend to not offer unsolicited advice, especially when you have access to less information on the subject than the party you're offering it to

Quote from: Gabriel on January 02, 2018, 08:14 AMWhat are these 3.8 features people are eagerly waiting for?Check the support forums (esp. on Steam). Almost every thread is an actionable thing that could be fixed or improved. The worst part, though, is that many of them have been fixed years ago, just waiting to be released.
Quote from: Mega`Adnan on January 02, 2018, 01:53 PMDevs should work on resuming the dropped game,Yeah, however it turns out it's a really hard problem.
Quote from: Ytrojan on January 02, 2018, 05:24 PMThen Again, Worms Armageddon 4.0 is probably using up all that valuable time, and that time could've been spent on the short-term 3.8.Right now nobody is working on 4.0 stuff.
Quote from: Sensei on January 03, 2018, 08:23 PMWhat is it then, are we getting update in January or it's postponed? We've contacted Team17, and are using the time to continue working on the game.
Quote from: skunk3 on January 03, 2018, 10:24 PMAlso, if there's stuff he's been doing more recently that I simply do not know about, that is very possible.Lately, the division of labour has been mostly as follows:
- Deadcode works on the game itself (code that ends up in WA.exe)
- I work on everything else, i.e.:
- Maintaining WormNET services, i.e. WormNAT2, HostingBuddy, SheriffBot
- Maintaining the servers the above run on
- WormNET moderation
- Development tools (building, releasing, localization, documentation)
- Development infrastructure (bug tracking, communication, source code repository)
- Cheat countermeasures
- Communication with Team17
- Communication with the community, apparently
- Setting arbitrary deadlines
Currently I'm working on an internal tool that will make it much easier for us to document and localize the changelog, at Deadcode's suggestion. This tool has an open-source component, you can follow its development here: https://github.com/CyberShadow/rtf2any/commits/master

*looks at poll results*
Well, it's settled. Update delayed until December 31, 2022. Pack it up, boys! I'm sure all 7 people still playing W:A by then will find the wait worthwhile.
No. The entire idea that an "unfinished" release of a W:A update will "hurt" the game or community and is worth delaying the update indefinitely is Deadcode's and Deadcode's alone. Nobody else (who knows what this is exactly about) shares that opinion.
There is a reason why I practically stopped working on the game itself a long time ago.

We had high load today due to another snapshot cleanup task:

Quote from: Kradie on August 12, 2017, 01:26 PMWhy does it take so long to resolve?Because there's a lot of work to be done.
Quoteperhaps you could give a more clear answer when users can expect a resolve? The bottom line answer is "when it's done" (though we have a deadline for the migration until the end of September or so, so no longer than then).

Please.
OK, done. I turned off HostingBuddy on the server for now.
Until the maintenance is over (and maybe some more time, depends), it will be running on my home PC instead, which is on all the time anyway.
WMDB is still on the server, so map loading may be slow sometimes. So, please don't spam !map too much.
I'll do the same with WormNAT2 tomorrow, I think.

August 04, 2017, 03:01 PMQuoteThis in popular opinion can be very frustrating in games.
If you want, I can turn off HostingBuddy and WormNAT2 until the maintenance is finished. All games will then be hosted directly, and there will be no more lag

Not... really... I mean, maybe, technically, depending on how you interpret it, but it's still misrepresenting the situation.

There's a btrfs snapshot cleanup task running that should bring the load levels down again within a day or two.
There is still more maintenance work left to do.

I am not asking too much. In fact, I am asking for next to nothing. Yet, as I have been previously in this thread, I fully expect to be harangued again for not treating DC & CS like gods who can do no wrong, just because they're volunteers. It is not written anywhere that volunteers can not be called out for a lack of communication or not be compared to other volunteers in similar situations that communicate much better (see my prior post about MarathonMan, who continues to consistently update about his slow progress).
Hi,
The state of the update is essentially "when it's ready" taken too far. Almost everyone involved with the updates one way or another agrees that it should have been released a long time ago. It has been very demotivating for me as well to have my work from many years ago to still not have seen the light of day.
This is why we agreed that Worms Armageddon v3.8 will be released not later than December 31, 2017 (plus however long Team17's release process takes), ready or not. Unfinished features will be cut, buggy or insufficiently tested changes reverted. There are already many good changes queued to make a great update. I will do my best to ensure this happens personally.

Hi all,
We're doing some heavy maintenance on the server, which is having a big effect on load levels. Unfortunately everything will be slow-ish for a few more days, possibly a week. Some downtime will also happen for reboots and such.
It's all for a good reason, though, and will allow us to have much better backups and possibly allow moving to a faster server (much more efficiently than the previous server move).
Sorry for the inconvenience
