Leagues General / Old people and leagues? (reflexes and stuff)
« on: January 26, 2014, 05:54 AM »
Okay, I'm not really terribly old, but I imagine older than most here. My reflexes aren't what they were 10 years ago, and I don't think I'll ever be able to competatively rope, given what I see in league replays.

I was looking at the leagues that are played. And the problem I have with them (with partial exception of TEL) is that they're all reflex based. Especially, there's no real way to avoid heavy focus on ropes (again, except TEL) since your opponent can always pick a roper or wxw or whatnot.

Now, there is TEL, but that itself is far more focused on quick action than strategy.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the above - but I do think worms has a lot more room for strategic play that doesn't involve twitch skills with quite such a focus - is there no interest in a league focused on schemes (or perhaps a single one) where time and twitch skills aren't the most critical factor?

It could involve old Pro scheme, T17, maybe even intermediate, anchored BnG and quite a bunch of other schemes.

If there's no audience for such a community, that's fine, of course, but I do wonder if I'd be the only one interested in such a league.

Tech Support / Manual installation help
« on: January 18, 2014, 02:28 PM »
So, I found my old W:A CD - it's the European Microprose release.

Since I don't want to run the installer (which apparently installs DX6 without questions, which I can't really have on this machine, and I also suspect it simply wouldn't work on my Win7x64 system), I was trying to follow the information on
http://worms2d.info/European_release_(Worms_Armageddon)

The cab extraction links are outdated, but http://legroom.net/software/uniextract worked for that purpose. So I copied stuff over as noted there.

Then I downloaded http://wa.team17.com/main.html?page=supp&area=upda&file=15 - which then proceeds to download wapatch.exe, and that tells me that Worms is not installed correctly.

I strongly suspect that's because I have the registry keys set up incorrectly - the three ' around APPDIR appear to be meant to be wiki highlighting, but even without, I'm not clear on the exact correct format - if someone was able to provide a .reg (with any path - once I see the correct format, I'm able to edit) that correctly installs this information, that'd be nice.

That is assuming my assumption about the missing registry keys being the issue is right - if not, what else might be missing?

General discussion / Really old players?
« on: January 17, 2014, 06:05 AM »
I've just checked some backup files I carried over from PC to PC, and it looks like I was active back in 2001 or so, mostly.

I also recall being part of a clan called PSU back then.

I wonder if anyone from back around then is still around?

My nick was the same - Garf - I think. I used to play Pro (back when there was the offical Wormnet leagues, I used to not totally suck here), BnG, BattleRaces. I liked shoppers, warmers and propers, but never even got remotely decent at them.

So - if any old W:A addicts are reading - yay! Anyone remember stuff?

Promotion Project / Where to buy W:A?
« on: January 17, 2014, 05:54 AM »
I've been playing W:A pretty enthusiatically long ago.

But CDs are long lost, and I really don't want to go and buy CDs (with crappy old DRM stuff involved that's gonna be installed).

So, I think if anyone wants to promote the game, a good step would be to help folks like me: Where can I buy W:A digitally? GoG.com would be a good spot to look for it, but it's not there. Any other digital distribution available that doesn't require junk (like Steam)?
