Gaming Central / Against the Jellub
February 12, 2021, 01:13 PM
Last year I made a game, which I've uploaded as (very) "early access" on GameJolt. Here's the link, and here's some introductory text from there.

https://gamejolt.com/games/jellubs/584379

QuoteIt's a tactical turn-based (or turn-based strategy) game in which simple autonomous machines must destroy blob-enemies ("Jellubs") on a hexagonal grid. The player controls the positions and movement of the machines, as well as their upgrades. The Jellubs, which come in different types, land in random places at the start of every turn. The USP of this game is that the player can see four or more preview-screens of the exact landing patterns of the incoming waves of Jellubs, which lets the player plan where to move the machines, for optimal effect.

There are lots of gameplay videos to watch.

It would be hard for me to go much further with this project. I'd be interested to hear any opinions from wormers. Thanks  :)

Gaming Central / Into the Breach
March 03, 2019, 09:31 PM
This is the game that has temporarily replaced worms in my life. It will probably take you several runs (or "timelines") to get into it, but it will be worth it.

Off Topic / Enlarging a big image (tiff file)
November 28, 2018, 02:44 PM
I have a tiff image of about 3000 x 2300 pixels, 300dpi (20 MB), which I want to increase to roughly 8000 x 6000. Can anyone advise me on the best program(s)/algorithm(s) to accomplish this? I already have an adobe-produced version and the windows 10 MS Paint version, which are almost identical. And these are actually decent quality, so I'm mainly wondering if you can do better.

Off Topic / Freelancing
March 16, 2018, 09:09 AM
Does anyone here use the site freelancer.com, either as a freelancer or a client? I've joined it recently, and would be interested to hear other people's experiences. (Other sites offering similar services are upwork, guru, and fiverr, but the phuckers at upwork blocked my application.)

Off Topic / Mumble: Server connection failed
November 17, 2017, 10:05 AM
I couldn't join the worms2d.info mumble server yesterday, and I thought it was because my version was out of date, but when I updated I'm still getting this message: "Server connection failed: Connection refused." I've googled it and other people have this problem and seemingly can't solve it!

Can YOU still connect? Do you have any suggestions for me? Should I/we use another program?

Annoying that this is happening just after CWT streaming has resumed...

General discussion / Oi nutter

This is a (mildly) popular UK TV advert from the 90s, which I can remember. So why am I posting it here instead of in the off-topic section? Wait till the end and you'll see!

General discussion / New game: Battlesheeps
December 21, 2016, 01:03 PM
I've had an idea for a new game type, based on the classic paper-and-pencil game Battleships (wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleship_(game)). I'm not sure how much fun it would be, but never mind that. Here's the lowdown.

There are two players who have two teams each, one with one worm and one with six worms (i.e. total worms = 1+6 + 1+6 = 14). The inventory contains invisibility, lots of teleports, and unlimited super sheep and maybe unlimited pigeons as well. Worms are initially randomly placed on the map, and all healths are 1. Here's what the map might look like:

The two single worms are manually teleported onto the launch pads in the centre. These are the attacking worms. The worms in the teams of 6 must be made invisible and then teleported into the rectangles. One team goes to the left, the other to the right. One worm is alone, two must be adjacent, and three must be adjacent, where adjacency can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. The single worms will launch super/aqua sheep to seek and destroy the worms in the opponent's team of six. The invisible worms in the teams of six will always skip their turns.

Terrain will be destructible so worms will plop and you'll know which rectangles you've previously attacked. The winner is the first player to kill all the worms in the opponent's team of six.

As with Battleships, if you kill a worm, you'll naturally attack the rectangles around it on your next turns in case it's a group of 2 or 3. And a new factor here is that worms in the middle rectangles are slightly safer than those around the edge, as the latter are easier to hit.

Okay, that's the concept. I don't know if anyone, including me, will bother to test it out but I wanted to share it with y'all.  :)

Of the eight team/special weapons, only five are used by serious players, with the cows being the most popular choice among pros. You occasionally run into someone who uses the moles (for a laugh) but you absolutely never see the old woman or the sheep launcher.

So why not combine them? If one of them is selected for a team, they get the other one as well. This way, people might actually choose them.

Everyone can see it's happening but no one can believe it. Leicester City, my local team, are 5 points clear at the top of the English Premier League with 7 games to go. This time last year we were at the bottom. What's happening now is comparable to what Nottingham Forest did under Brian Clough in 1978. It's the stuff of football dreams. We finished 2nd in 1929 and 3rd in 1963, so this will be our first ever league victory, and by the way we've been FA Cup runners-up four times, so we've never had that trophy either.

So how has it happened? Nigel Pearson built a damn good team, and after Claudio Ranieri took over, he continued the momentum. He's determined to win a league for the first time and most of the players want to prove themselves too, old and young. But crucially, the usual top 4-6 teams in the league are all playing shit this season, which has paved the way for Leicester. When other smaller teams have played exceptionally well in this league in seasons past, at least one of these top clubs tended to be too good for them. But not this time! Only Arsenal are their usual selves, i.e. finishing third.

History is being made at the King Power stadium! Remember the motto: Foxes never quit!

WE'RE TOP OF THE LEAGUE! WE'RE TOP OF THE LE-E-EAGUE! WE'RE LEICESTER CITY, WE'RE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

Tech Support / Skunk-poison health-drops stopping
February 14, 2016, 10:54 AM
I was in a four-way inter game yesterday, where two worms were skunked. Around the time sd was supposed to start, the worms stopped losing their 5 hp! A couple of turns later, these two worms were the only ones left for sd and their healths went down to zero as usual.

Why did the poison stop having its effect? I'm thinking it must be to do with sd, but I've never seen this before and I can't find anything online about it.

Macclesfield is a town in England to the south of Manchester. I found the following worms tournament advertised!

http://www.entropyevents.com/worms/

There's no date, but I'm guessing it's either finished or didn't happen. Does anyone know anything about it? It is - or would be - a great event for wormers in the northwest of England.

PS. Interesting to see that their scheme features unlimited baseball bats.

Cups and Tournaments General / Group standings
April 17, 2015, 11:31 AM
What's the exact formula for ranking the players in a group? Points come first, obviously, but in the event of two or more players being tied on points, there are numerous factors to consider, i.e. rounds won, rounds lost, round ratio, head-to-head result, matches played (unless technical wins are granted when games aren't played), player problems (e.g. disappeared and uncontactable), and relative position in overall ranking.

I don't know if this is the correct sub-forum for this post (if indeed there is such a forum) but what the heck. I've written a Worms-themed short story, and I want to share it with the community  :)
