So now I'm ready to go ISO. What ISO creator and what mount works? (Win7x64, but I might also need Win7x32 if I can convince my gf to use a copy I'd purchase for her).

Leagues General / Re: Old people and leagues? (reflexes and stuff)

Wow, big response here! While it seems like there's some folks have similar thoughts, let me start off by saying that I by no means want to try to throw over what apparently works well here! Certainly not by shutting down, even temporarily, popular leagues.

It's also not that I'd dislike roping - I think it's one of the most fantastic game mechanics ever introduced by a game: Deceptively simple, yet extremely challenging to master perfectly. And I like doing it as well! I just am not even remotely good at it.

TheWalrus: Thanks for the link! Seems like there's even more active leagues and cups around, I'll certainly have a look. Watching the replays, I actually think I might put up a decent fight there.

HHC: hitting 40 this year. Also: T17 exclusive league? That sounds like my kind of thing!

Leagues General / Old people and leagues? (reflexes and stuff)
« on: January 26, 2014, 05:54 AM »
Okay, I'm not really terribly old, but I imagine older than most here. My reflexes aren't what they were 10 years ago, and I don't think I'll ever be able to competatively rope, given what I see in league replays.

I was looking at the leagues that are played. And the problem I have with them (with partial exception of TEL) is that they're all reflex based. Especially, there's no real way to avoid heavy focus on ropes (again, except TEL) since your opponent can always pick a roper or wxw or whatnot.

Now, there is TEL, but that itself is far more focused on quick action than strategy.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the above - but I do think worms has a lot more room for strategic play that doesn't involve twitch skills with quite such a focus - is there no interest in a league focused on schemes (or perhaps a single one) where time and twitch skills aren't the most critical factor?

It could involve old Pro scheme, T17, maybe even intermediate, anchored BnG and quite a bunch of other schemes.

If there's no audience for such a community, that's fine, of course, but I do wonder if I'd be the only one interested in such a league.

Files Comments / Re: File #519, RemapKeys for W:A
« on: January 18, 2014, 09:06 PM »
Trying to use this, I get an error - can't load wkremapkeys.dll - error code 0x0..07e.

Edit: Figured that this is due to the madchook.dll missing from this archive. The one over on worms2d.info has the missing dll. Adding it and things work fine.

Thanks for the offer, but I actually managed to find my dusty old european Microprose release W:A disc, and it works (after some fiddling installing it)!

I actually resolved this without registry fiddling: As mentioned in http://worms2d.info/Patch_(Worms_Armageddon) wapatch.exe can actually be opened as a zip file - extracting data1.cab and then using UniExtract and overwriting everything appears to work!

Tech Support / Manual installation help

So, I found my old W:A CD - it's the European Microprose release.

Since I don't want to run the installer (which apparently installs DX6 without questions, which I can't really have on this machine, and I also suspect it simply wouldn't work on my Win7x64 system), I was trying to follow the information on
http://worms2d.info/European_release_(Worms_Armageddon)

The cab extraction links are outdated, but http://legroom.net/software/uniextract worked for that purpose. So I copied stuff over as noted there.

Then I downloaded http://wa.team17.com/main.html?page=supp&area=upda&file=15 - which then proceeds to download wapatch.exe, and that tells me that Worms is not installed correctly.

I strongly suspect that's because I have the registry keys set up incorrectly - the three ' around APPDIR appear to be meant to be wiki highlighting, but even without, I'm not clear on the exact correct format - if someone was able to provide a .reg (with any path - once I see the correct format, I'm able to edit) that correctly installs this information, that'd be nice.

That is assuming my assumption about the missing registry keys being the issue is right - if not, what else might be missing?

TheWalrus - yes, I do remember you as well, though not sure about details. It's been a long time!

And thanks for the welcome, everyone.

Oddly enough, I don't find myself mentioned on that old PSU page. I kinda think I might've played even earlier - given how I just saw that the "official" Wormnet leagues ended mid-2000 already-, and my old bookmark for the PSU clan page was psu.hypermart.net (which 404s now). Definitely the same clan, though, I remember lots of the names there.

It's nice to see that the game is still striving and that so many folks from waaaay back are still around!

I've just checked some backup files I carried over from PC to PC, and it looks like I was active back in 2001 or so, mostly.

I also recall being part of a clan called PSU back then.

I wonder if anyone from back around then is still around?

My nick was the same - Garf - I think. I used to play Pro (back when there was the offical Wormnet leagues, I used to not totally suck here), BnG, BattleRaces. I liked shoppers, warmers and propers, but never even got remotely decent at them.

So - if any old W:A addicts are reading - yay! Anyone remember stuff?

« on: January 17, 2014, 05:54 AM »
I've been playing W:A pretty enthusiatically long ago.

But CDs are long lost, and I really don't want to go and buy CDs (with crappy old DRM stuff involved that's gonna be installed).

So, I think if anyone wants to promote the game, a good step would be to help folks like me: Where can I buy W:A digitally? GoG.com would be a good spot to look for it, but it's not there. Any other digital distribution available that doesn't require junk (like Steam)?
