Other worms games / Re: Do you guys like Worms W.M.D?
« on: July 20, 2020, 08:51 PM »
It's actually a pretty decent game. This is the wrong group of people to ask though because most of the people on this forum are die-hard W:A fans and nothing but W:A is good enough for them. I've logged about 1,400 hours or so into playing WMD and I think it's worth owning and playing. That said, I do really hate the crafting mechanic. Vehicles I also dislike, but to a far lesser extent. Crafting is by far the worst part of WMD.

I just want it to be known that I have limited time for gaming these days and really my best days to play are Sundays + Mondays, but even that is going to be based upon Central time (US) and not guaranteed.

I agree that WHO is full of shit and BLM protests outside of US, where at countries with no black population is quite dumb.

While I think the way people have been protesting at the same time a deadly virus is globally present is extremely dumb, I don't think it's dumb at all to protest in support of BLM in general, anywhere, I think in theory it's a great idea, but the execution is pathetic and downright disrespectful.

Black Lives Matter is just a slogan, a motto if you will, a catchy few words that can be used as a headline, but the bigger picture is to try and bring equality to everyone, to put an end to police brutality, government corruption, discrimination(of any kind), and various other things, and if you think about it, it doesn't just affect humans, it affects all life on Earth.

If only that is what BLM stands for lol...

BLM is just a Communist front helping to dismantle the West. This shit isn't about equality... it's about revolution.

Those who still play the game on a regular basis are, on average, not nearly as skilled or as interesting as those active years ago. (Personal opinion.) I am not saying that there aren't cool and skilled people who still play the game. I am just saying that comparatively speaking, the current situation isn't even close to what it once was... and I'm not even talking about general activity level on the server. It just simply is not the same experience.
So let me get this straight....  In skill wise, everyone has to rope super duper fast like saltyk9, Anubis, Mablak, Fudo, Noentity,, and so on to make them interesting? A human being at decent skill level can be much as interesting in WA as any  other high skilled human. There aren't much ropers around with high speed as it once were, but that doesn't make people boring. Same goes for land schemes.

Instead of emphasizing how much you miss the past, wish things were like the past, try instead to be some sort of a mentor to the current generation wormers. Show interest, show moves in various of schemes that they don't know about. Impress them with your knowledge and moves. Yes it can be tiring, boring, and so on. Some might not even care and just quit, I have dealt with that a lot and it is frustrating.

Many on Worms don't even know about this update, and once it will be released, people will be shocked, that a 20 year old game got a new fresh update! I am sure it will help WA in some capacity to gain interest of others. WA still sells well on Steam too, so it's not like it is dying. So don't give up hope! Get out off your bubble and seize the opportunity :)

No, that is not what I said or even inferred. Skill speaks for itself. As far as 'interesting' players goes, what I meant by that is personality. Having a cool / funny personality is far more important in other players (IMO) than being skilled is, because if someone can make me laugh or chat on thought-provoking topics, that'll keep me entertained. One of my favorite W:A players of all time wasn't a pro-level player at all, but he was absolutely hilarious and in every game I played with him I was laughing so hard that I didn't give a crap about winning or losing... that is a sure sign that one is having fun.

I have 'mentored' countless players over the years. I've paid my dues many times over as far as that goes. Hell, I even did some of that last night. However, would I rather play some matches with unknown newbies or see AG once again full of familiar names? No contest. I don't see my stance on this as being negative per se; it's more a matter of me simply being honest. No matter how much I love W:A gameplay, without the right people around it just isn't nearly as fun as it could be.

As I have said, I am glad that we are getting an update and I respect the work put into making it happen. I just think that the update isn't going to address what *I* consider to be the real problem(s) of the current state of W:A. Bug fixes and feature implementation is cool and all but until the old schoolers start becoming active again en masse the game will remain a pale shadow of its former self. I truly hope that this update brings some people out of retirement but I doubt that will be the case.

Lolicon-guy, your post was quite a mess. I tried to understand it, but you were jumping from democracy in community, to DC having mental issues, to psycho killers.. :) Gotta admit, fun train of thoughts. Almost felt like you're trolling everyone who decides to read it. Maybe I'm just too stupid to understand it.  ::)

While it can be argued that it's never too late for an update, as far as I am concerned, it is already far too late because the best era of W:A is long gone and the vast majority of the most interesting / fun / skilled players no longer play and likely will never be active again.

I don't know where you're getting all this negativity from. It feels like you, me, and couple of other ppl around here doing same conversations over and over again. "Interesting/fun/skilled players are gone" Cmon dude. What you're saying right now is outright lame! You're living in some kind of a 'last century WA bubble', not letting anyone come close to it cause it may burst eventually.. If you really believe in words you just said, then you're delusional as well.
LilScrappy - couple of weeks ago this was just a name I knew from few of our twitch big rr/aerial sessions when he would jump in and chat about WA. Then I started seeing him in games every night and we got to talk. I mentioned poker one night and he revealed he's playing poker for living. Week after I see him hosting Big RR tournament on TUS with 200$ prize pool. Not interesting enough for you?

Legion was a nick never to be seen around Wormnet, until 2019. Then he started joining community chats/games, he made a program that lets you make your own Big RR map in few clicks.. Not to mention he's one of the scariest big rope racers in the game right now, especially when it comes to challenges. Not skilled enough for you?

Cueshark is a grown ass man,40+, got kids to feed.. came back to wa recently and enjoying every minute he gets to play it. Making new schemes, posting new youtube vids.. Voice chatting, drinking beers and having good time with anyone who's online. Not to mention guy is a fkn community legend. I also bet he's more thrilled to see a total newbie getting interested in WA after 20 yrs, than to play again with any other legend from old era.  Not fun enough for you?

I see you come online, host a game in 2 seconds and close it in next 10 seconds. 12 seconds of your lobby time is not actually "i'm looking for some fun time, so came to socialise on wormnet" kind of style. You keep distancing from community while also keep saying everyone suck nowadays. I don't see any sense of you keep playing WA with this attitude. Personally, I would be long gone if feeling this way.

Gotta give props to Sensei for making that server and for his leadership with organizing games.

We're getting some great numbers there and lot of newcomers getting interested in the game. Community is where props need to be given, not me! Appreciate your words, nevertheless.

I enjoy the game itself with the various schemes, but what really makes Worms special for me is the community of people who I have gotten to know over the past 20+ years. Every time someone becomes inactive for whatever reason, I find that my enjoyment of the game diminishes little by little.

When I log onto WormNET I rarely see any familiar names that aren't snooping. Rather than join an Intermediate hosted by some unknown Argentinian, I typically just host up a Big RR for myself to practice. I'll play a few games and log off. It doesn't take long to scan the player list, so there's no need to sit around in AG longer than a few seconds. I am not distancing myself from anyone nor am I insulting anyone aside from random noobs, lol.

I used to get so sick of people spamming chat with "(fill in current league/ladder name) NE1????" and people trying to set up clanners and stuff. Ironically, I'd actually love to see that kind of commitment again, even if I don't personally enjoy playing in leagues.

Sheriff hasn't been active in god knows how long. I did see Jmoberg pop in AG one time a few years ago and play a handful of games, but I think it was a one-time appearance because I haven't seen him since. There's a few people who will pop on once in a blue moon but they never stick around for long, most likely due to the fact that they don't recognize any names.

It's never too late for an update. Most of the ppl that left, left because of personal reasons.
Ppl that were active in ranked tus games were there just for money last few years when numbers were still good.
Did you all forget how Asbest got dozens of newbies to get involved in league and play vs him, just so he can get enough pts for spot in playoffs. All that for 10$!
I know it's Asbest and he's not a real mirror of the Worms scene, but he wasn't the only one active just because of the money prizes. And that's the truth. These ppl would leave either way, 3.8 out or not.

I'm quite tired of posts that goes like: "I'm grateful for our community devs and appreciate their work, but.."

You gotta understand that there's no "but's" when you're receiving an update for a game 20 yrs old that's abandoned by its developers for last ~18 years.

Respectfully, I disagree on some points.

While it can be argued that it's never too late for an update, as far as I am concerned, it is already far too late because the best era of W:A is long gone and the vast majority of the most interesting / fun / skilled players no longer play and likely will never be active again. Had this update come out years ago it could have possibly enticed people to come back to the game, or stay active, or at the very least stay active longer than they normally otherwise would have due to life. My opinion on the matter is that at this point the update will do little to nothing in terms of getting older players to come back, and tbh that's all I really care about. I'd take a bunch of old buddies being consistently active again over this update any day because W:A is ultimately all about the community. No matter how well the game gets updated, it really doesn't matter to me if AG is full of afk snoopers and random noobs every time I log on.

I also don't believe that those who were active with ranked play were doing so only for the money. In fact I'd bet that the money had little to nothing to do with it, especially when we are talking about such small prizes. Besides, people were playing ranked for years and years before any sort of a cash prize was ever offered. As far as Asbest goes, who would possibly deign to know the mind of a sad, Russian troll?

I think that 'buts' are entirely permissible because we are talking about personal opinions and feelings. I absolutely respect the hard work of everyone who maintains W:A to this day. However, I think it's too little, too late. That's just my opinion though, and to state or even infer that people shouldn't be allowed any 'buts' on this topic is just an attempt at controlling behavior, or at best shaming people.

83
I wish someone would just ban that Shadow-The-Worm guy because he posts nothing but nonsense.

Anyway...

I respect the hard work involved with the 3.8 update but I feel that it's far too late coming. If this update came out several years ago it might be a bit different but nowadays W:A is nothing like it used to be. I almost feel bad for those involved with making this happen because they put in so much time and effort making an update that won't be appreciated nearly as much as it should be. Rarely do I see any familiar names on WormNET unless they are snooping / afk. There's nothing about this update that I think will entice inactive veterans to start playing again, and to be honest, I don't care about playing games with random noobs; especially those who don't speak English or understand basics like scheme rules. So on one hand I am pleased to know that an update is incoming, but on the other, any happiness is instantly washed away by the recognition that the update isn't likely to bring back the "good ol' days" of W:A and the experience is essentially going to remain the same.

So it looks as though the new Worms title will be crap.

3D, realtime, battle royale. Blech.

Have you actually created anything or do you just come up with ideas and claim to be some kind of "modder?"

General discussion / Who has moderator access in-game?
« on: May 28, 2020, 10:47 PM »
I know for a fact that at least one person has true mod access in W:A - Maverick. I know he doesn't play anymore but last time I saw him I learned that he did have some sort of special mod/admin access to various features of WormNET. Does anyone else have this sort of access? And if so, who?

Other worms games / Re: Team17 has announced Worms 2020

Crafting doesn't really require much resource management at all. The lowest grade of crafting materials are essentially infinite because one can just infinitely deconstruct infinite items. The next grade up is a little harder to come by but with crafting crates turned on you never know what you might get. Also regular weapon crate drops can contain items that are kinda crap (like sheep, etc) that you can deconstruct for materials. Of course not everyone crafts the same items in every single game but of the 'over 80' items in the game, how many actually get crafted? Maybe a dozen at the very most? It's so very random and unpredictable and the coin crate system that they used in Revolution / Clan Wars was much better and easier to keep track of.

A huge part of Worms gameplay has always been paying attention to what your opponent(s) has used during the course of a match so you can know what they have available. Of course, random crate drops are a thing in a lot of schemes but still... the other games also don't have drones that people can spam, which is a major problem in WMD. For the most part, you start with your inventory and that's that. In WMD there is practically no way of knowing what anyone has in their inventory at any time, which doesn't add to the strategy of the game, but rather diminishes it. You can't make intelligent decisions based upon what they have used. Well, you can to a degree, but at best all one can do is cross one's fingers and hope that they don't have sufficient materials available to craft an item that can perfectly screw you over. Default Worms gameplay is largely based upon observation and prediction, but WMD completely ruins that because you have to expect that anyone could have any item at any time, which leads to suboptimal plays and positioning based upon paranoia and unpredictability.

Also, being able to craft right before someone's turn ends and have that item immediately available to use the next round is just plain cheesy. It doesn't take skill or really even "fast thinking and reacting." As long as you have your crafting tab open you can easily craft anything you want at the end of someone else's turn without the need to be exceptionally quick about it. I think that there should be AT LEAST a 1-round delay between crafting an item and being able to use it just to prevent cheese.

I actually really like the graphics and art style of WMD. I also love the concept of buildings and tunnels that they added. However, a lot of the rest of what they added is either broken or not very useful. Weapon emplacements are often kinda useless depending upon where they spawn. Random starting magnets? Useless since they only last a couple of turns and then they are deactivated. I do like random neutral sentry guns on the maps. Vehicles are cheesy and lame and can be exploited, and if one player gets a lucky vehicle drop it can easily make the difference between a win and a loss. Crafting is by far the worst though and even though the meta of which items are generally 'best' to craft (and most commonly-crafted) is clear and I can to some degree predict what someone will craft or has crafted already, there's no way of knowing for sure. Vehicle mines are also basically useless 95% of the time.

Imagine if crafting were a thing in W:A and you're playing Elite, for example. It would COMPLETELY change the dynamic of the scheme, and for the worse. It would be poison nades everywhere, just like ranked is in WMD. Speaking of poison, one thing that Worms Reloaded and the next 2 titles did well was making poison not be able to magically pass right through solid terrain. In W:A and WMD the poison goes right through, which I think is ridiculous.

edit: Also, another thing that sucks about WMD is the fact that in team matches there is no option for all members of the team to have a shared inventory. Everyone gets their own inventory with their own pool of crafting materials and if one player collects a crate only they can use it. That sucks. I think that by DEFAULT team matches should have a shared inventory so players are forced to communicate and strategize.

"     go Ancient!"
Kradie?
Nah, I have now like 3 main teams and go Ancient is not one of them.

I swear I played with someone that have a team named go Ancient. The aggravating part I can't remember who it was, and I believe it was fairly recent lol.  :D

Go Ancient! is a Swedish player if my memory serves. Orbik maybe?

I just tried it for a minute or so and my average was about 235 ms, but I'm also left-handed and my mouse is a piece of shit. It could probably be a bit lower but I don't care. I don't play any quick twitch types of games. I'm also using a 1080p TV as a computer monitor.

« on: May 18, 2020, 09:20 PM »
ICQ and AIM to start with. Eventually I barely used ICQ because most people moved to AIM. I had MSN but barely used it. I still remember my ICQ number... 6073961. Pretty sure some Russian stole my account. I know I had that at least as far back as 97-98, if memory serves. I used AIM until social networking sites and mobile phones rendered it basically irrelevant. I don't even really 'chat' with anyone anymore. I especially hate text messaging or typing shit out on my phone. I'd much rather just send a message from my computer because I can type 20x faster with a keyboard, but even then I don't really see the need to chat with someone for hours like I used to back in the day.
