General discussion / New Analog Keyboards for Roping
November 25, 2024, 07:41 PM
In the last few years, people came up with a special class of keyboards focused on competitive games - analog keyboards.

it all started with wooting, and other brands (namely razor) caught up too.

The idea of analog buttons is that, just like on gamepads, each button has a degree of pressing, instead of discrete pressed/not pressed

at first glance, this sounds useless, except perhaps for racing sims (where it allows to turn/gas smoothly), but people came up with several common use cases for analog switches. one of them is "rapid trigger"

here's how it works:
on a regular keyboard, you need to press down a key quite a bit, until around the midway point of the switch, in order to activate it and register an input. After that, if you want to register another input, you have to let the key travel up above this midway point, in order to deactivate it, and then you need to press it down again. If a key is fully pressed down (bottomed out) and you let go just a little bit, but not enough to reach the midway point and deactivate the keypress, and then you push it back down, it won't trigger another input. You can test this yourself, simply press down one of the keys on your mechanical keyboard all the way, then very lightly lift up your finger so the key goes up just a tiny bit, and then press it down again. This counts as 1 long keypress (like how you would hold down for a slider), not 2 keypresses.

Meanwhile, with rapid trigger, every movement that presses the key downwards, no matter how small (as small as 0.1mm) will trigger a keypress, and every movement that lets the key travel upwards (as small as 0.1mm again) will deactivate the key. So you can basically bottom out, then let the key come up only a tiny distance, then press it again, and it will trigger 2 keypresses now instead of 1.

here's a good video example of how it works https://youtu.be/BSlKt7m7xXk?t=55

This feature exploded in some gaming communities. namely community of Osu, from which I took the description of rapid trigger. It's also very popular in online FPS and almost any games where you need to be able to quickly tap and react

Rapid Trigger basically allows players to register clicks by just "waving" the button

I was wondering if any of yall had heard/tried these keyboards in worms.

another interesting feature of analog keys is that, if desired, you can set them up so that they basically register 2 clicks. (and yes, those keyboards are considered cheating in some communities too, which is another interesting topic)

that is, when the button is pressed lightly (say, the key is pushed down 30% - you can actually set up and actuation point of each key with analog keyboard), 1 click is registered, then, when the key is pressed 90%, another click is registered.

this would allow, for example, to shoot rope with a light tap, and remove it by pushing the button further

but even without this, the ability to instantly release the key seems very useful in worms. I remember the problem of many double tapers was that they pressed the second button when they hadn't released the first one yet, so some of their clicks didn't register. rapid trigger theoretically fixes that issue.

Another interesting feature of analog keyboards is the "snap tap". it's mainly used in online fps.
what it does in short is when you have the left and right keys (or up and down) pressed at the same time, the keyboard only registers the key that is pressed harder. Thus, you can change the direction of movement instantaneously by pressing one of the arrows a little harder

It's not hard to guess why this is popular in online shooters, but it's also useful for roping, at least in theory. many movements in TTRR require incredibly fast switching of the arrows. same for trick races (if anyone still plays that..)

I wonder what your thoughts are on this

Quote from: Kradie on November 03, 2024, 01:52 PM- Does something make you happy? IF yes: Then that's something wroth pursuing because it has meaning.
this is a shaky logic.

1. some things make you happy in the short term, but miserable in the long run.
and what if bigger goals are worth suffering in the short run? after all, we prioritize long-term things all the time. we save money and invest, we avoid drugs, and so on

2. why exactly happiness should determine our purpose? this has a well-known ending, called hedonism.
i'd say happiness is just a criteria of life's quality. but it cannot fullfill life's meaning

3. in the end, even if i'll chase life's quality, there are many things that make us happy. how do i make a choice?

Quote from: Kradie on November 03, 2024, 01:52 PM- Do you want to be right that there is no meaning?

my dream would be to be wrong.

Quote from: Kradie on November 03, 2024, 01:52 PM- Do you believe in eternal nothingness after death? IF so, do you want to be right about that?

i'm agnostic, i don't believe it, but I don't deny it either. it's simply beyond subjective experience

Quote from: Kradie on November 01, 2024, 03:40 PMSome people, particular religious people, argues that if there is no God, there is no meaning.
are you suggesting to believe in God to find purpose?

by the way I'm touched that you guys are reading my awkward thoughts. I'll delve into philosophy a bit more

the people you are talking are, first of all, are Nietzsche and Dostoevsky, who by chance dived into the implications of the "death of God" simultaneously: as soon as people as a society realize that there is no God, there is no turning back, and men can only (and has to) create their own meanings, according to niezsche. hence his ideas about the ubermensch (basically a man who creates meanings for himself)

in philosophy, what you're suggesting (simply believing in god) is kierkegaardian leap of faith.
the problem is that you can't do it on your own. personally, i lost faith in christianity when I was a kid, i just can't consciously decide to believe again. I'd be glad to

I'm sorry, although my views can be perceived as depressing, I'm trying to be optimistic. i believe that life is worth living. i'm just searching for why.

by the way, speaking of religion. have you read Old Testament/Tanakh? one of the famous writings in them is called Ecclesiastes. it's truly one of the most pessimistic things you can ever read, it basically repeats my message above. it's about how meaningless life is, and paradoxically, its a big chunk of christianity

i couldn't believe it when i read it. partly because the style of writing is also quite different from the rest of the bible. it actually deepened my current views. i think i was around 17 at the time

If I had to choose a religion, it would be orthodox buddhism, like theravada. It's difficult to call a religion, it is a philosophy mainly. i find it much deeper than the western philosophy.

but even in buddhism, the central thought is pessimistic - life is suffering

i guess, the best thing I can do is probably not to infect you further with depressive philosophy. so avoid Schopenhauer at all costs, and german pessimists in general. they wrote much more convincingly than I do now.

but here's something I wanted to point out

Quote from: Kradie on November 01, 2024, 03:40 PMAn ungrateful person is not a good person
one of the implications of "God is dead" is that without God, the foundation of human morality disintegrates, so the concepts of good and bad lose their meaning (it's called immoralism). your appeal to what's good in your argument is itself based on faith in morality and religion.
when nothing has meaning, there is no criteria by which something can be good or bad.
i'm just too hopeless of a nihilist for that argument

nevertheless, I understand what you mean, and I also try to be a good person. even if you can't find meaning, there are "objective" reasons why it's logical to do the ethically right thing. one example for me is kantian categorical imperative. but i'm probably going too far with this

here's an interesting fact, I have a reading recommendation too. a play by Aristophanes called "the clauds". it's very short, around 80 pages.
in the play, Socrates basically invents science, and this destroys faith in the former gods, so all the moral foundations of society collapse. I was very impressed when I read it. it was 2,000 years ahead of Nietzsche. it was a joke against Socrates, and it's the reason why Socrates actually died (people believed in the play and condemned Socrates for "corrupting the youth")

Quote from: Kradie on November 01, 2024, 03:47 AMHave you read the book Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl?

I highly recommend

yeah, i've read 'search for meaning' and his other work on logotherapy. the problem with the logotherapy is that it can only get you so far.

Frankl's greatest achievement is "man's search for meaning", indeed, because it outlines how important it is to have meaning (in context of concentration camps, having meaning of life is the difference between life and death). and i agree.

but how exactly do you find meaning? that's the main weakness of logotherapy

once you've gotten a little into philosophy, there's not much logotherapy can give to you.

the problem is that there is no meaning in the outside world. meaning exists inside people's heads, as a deception, thanks to which they continue to exist. there is no meaning in the real world itself, and in order to have meaning in life, you need to maintain a self-delusion, a lie that meaning is real. depressed people are closest to the truth, because their ability to create mirages of meaning (aka dopamine system) is broken, and they cannot effectively lead themselves into self-deception.

our healthy brains that keeps us happy does so by deceiving ourselves. and i know, this is a hard thought to agree with. but once you understand it, there is no turning back.

how is logotherapy supposed to help with this? well, from the logotherapy point of view, if you can't find the meaning, a logotherapist will give you the meaning (and also antidepressants).

but having received the meaning from the outside, I will not have the responsibility to this meaning, which is what logotherapy comes down to. moreover, if I see that any meanings that seem to appear before my eyes are illusory, I will also see the illusory nature of the meaning of the logotherapist.

of all the existentialists, I liked Camus the most. if Frankl is an apologist for the need for meaning, which is generally obvious, Camus raised the issue of the lack of meaning very well, which was like meeting a kindred spirit for me. the absurd as meaning is also interesting, but in the end, Camus deceived himself too, in order to escape from the trap of meaning.

the problem of meaning is fundamental. things can only acquire meaning from the outside. and we as species can't look "outside" the universe, or ask gods about our purpose.

analytical philosophers even argued that the very formulation of the question of meaning is linguistically incorrect, so such a question should not be asked. but the question is necessary in order to live, and so I disagree.

i have been thinking about this for many years and have found some philosophical tricks that allow one to suppose the existence of meaning without self-deception.
i also think that one can transcend meaning through meditation. and i probably have a lifelong journey ahead of me to find this out

hey Triad, it's nice to see your doing flux lora training.
ask me anything if you're interested in the topic, i can give some tips. i'm actually one of the top researchers in the field. my antiblur lora is the most downloaded lora for flux (800 000 downloads on huggingface)

personally, i'm stuck searching for meaning.

it has been going for years, since i was a kid. i've read all the philosophy and religious books, and I haven't really found an answer. all texts try to penetrate the question of meaning, but not one can give a satisfactory answer. and the rest of philosophy has no purpose without the meaning, so it always comes back to that one question. i found answers that satisfied me for months and years, but each one eventually fell apart.
i can discuss this forever. i feel that one day i'll be able to find an approach to this question. but so far, my search has only taken me further from this goal.

I am that I am
I remember therefore I was
I think therefore I am

We are that we are
We remember therefore we were
We think therefore we are
We dream therefore we can
We leave, therefore we say goodbye.

i'm sorry komo but of all the things you've written, only cartesian cogito ergo sum makes sense. remembering does not always mean being, as memories can be false. but to think always means to exist, so that's always a good one.
i'd actually recommend reading descartes, his texts on philosophy aren't that hard, he wrote with crystal purity. and his meditations will give a good perspective, it's a pretty interesting read. descartes wanted to find the very basic starting point from which to build a philosophy, that's why things he wrote were that simple, yet influencial, especially the phrase you quoted

Its a good choice.

Players from gold/main league can't play versus silver/qualification league.

this is hilarious. a topic about reducing the number of leagues ended up with the idea to add another league as a lower division xD

General discussion / Re: What if WA..
May 18, 2024, 07:11 PM
personally, I wouldn't be the same person.

I didn't know english when I first started playing W:A. My grades were the worst in the class.
but the experience of communicating with people here has given me english knowledge that no courses or lessons will ever provide.
I speak with people in english everyday now.

I like to think that W:A gave me an understanding of the mentality of people from different countries.
I remember how playing kaos has significantly changed my sense of timing in the daily life. probably helped with strategic thinking too.

And it's probably the game that gave the most fun.
I like how there is no grind and dopamine hooks in the game, all the fun comes down to the fact that while someone is making a turn, you can chat with other people.
In fact, most of the game is not an actual gameplay, but just communication with people from different countries of the world. The game is really more of a "World Party", than an actual game. that name was very fitting..

Pretty sure W:A had a huge net positive effect on me, bigger than any other game, and probably more than studying at a university xD

I think 2009 was the golden age of RubberWorm and PX.
I'm afraid PX 0.8.0 only came out in 2011, and prior to that nobody played it. Same with RubberWorm, it was still in development by Pisto in 2009, long before Kawoosh takeover (KMZ at the time), the game was unsaturated with players who had RubberWorm installed at the time. I'd say the golden age of RubberWorm is right now.The problem is that the "golden age" of the game itself is gone. Although I think "golden age" is the wrong way to put it.
back in 2009 people told me about the golden age in 2004. But it's not about this gold stuff, it's that the game was more popular.

Asked both ChatGPT and Bard about Hysteria and Darts. Bard got both right (altho there is some slight hallucinations, like I never saw explosive barrels on Darts lol), while ChatGPT completely hallucinated.

ChatGPT's answers:
[attachment=1]

[attachment=2]

Bard's answers:
[attachment=3]

[attachment=4]

Both models have access to internet, but Bard seems to know better when is the best time to use it.

wow, Bards answers are insanely good. although now that services with language models have Internet access, the task is straight-forward.
but LLM inside ChatGPT still hallucinates thought out moust of the details, only knowing the nicknames and basic information

I don't want to be the one to say this, but there will be no more Worm Olympics.

The format that made the Olympics possible assumed a popularity that the game no longer has.
Even in the "golden days", when the game enjoyed it's popularity, not all tournaments managed to gather 12 or 16 people simultaneously, the minimum for tournament hosting. Nevertheless, some tournaments attracted 30-50 people, or more.
Spoiler! View

Since then, the popularity of the game has dropped 10-20 times. In the last years, Tus tournaments attracted 8 people (as best-case scenario), or 0 (meaning no one came, most of the time)

My point will be that this is not enough, from a simply mathematical point of view.

And here I'll note another thing: that magical feeling of Olympics stemmed from the Network effect:
2-3 tournaments with a small number of players are of little interest. But when for several months many tournaments with a large number of players from many dozens of countries and clans are played every day, forming a standing, people get involved in the race and competition, and this is a network effect that does not generate in a situation where the amount of players that comes to the tournaments is almost less than the number of medals expected to be awarded. (Not even talking about the old 3vs3 tournaments, where the winners received a total of 9 medals, more than the number of people tournaments ever had in the recent years).

The Olympics without the network effect is not going to work. This was already felt during the last few Olympics, where it did not attract enough people, felt like a failure, and it was for this reason that WO disappeared in the first place. The community has since shrunk several more times.
Tell me if I'm wrong, but I don't see how this can be fixed without raising the games popularity back 20x

never heard of: Szczebrzeszyniarz, Selentic, Xtrato, Lombriz, Swistak, Impo (plz don't go hard on me, i discovered WA in 2015)

otherwise im quite impressed
yeah we only had one komo. but we had alot of shadows. the other players were made up by chatgpt (it really likes to hallucinate on the stuff its undertrained on). and impo is me! I also saw chatgpt mentioning you in one of the answers, Charles. so you're in the history!
