If you are using the CD version, it is impossible to remove it, because it is burned on the compact disk.
Otherwise look for DATA\User\Fanfare\Worms!.wav
Dec 30 2013 23:59:44 <StepS> windowed mode isn't the only thing you need about frontend
Dec 30 2013 23:59:49 <StepS> you need it to be actually bigger
Dec 31 2013 00:00:13 <StepS> it actually is very small on my 15-inch full HD screen
Dec 31 2013 00:00:25 <StepS> while running at 640x480 or stretched mode makes it fuzzy
Dec 31 2013 00:00:44 <StepS> this problem has been around since the Worms Armageddon's release and no one has even tried to beat it

Not impossible, actually. Download wormkit wkFileOverride and put a dummy \DATA\User\Fanfare\Worms!.wav (i use 1sec silent WAV).

if you're interested:
in \DATA\Wav\Effects\ rename the WAVs to KEYCLICK.WAV.disabled and KEYERASE.WAV.disabled so the game ignores them (and you can easily revert, no deleting). the first is used while typing, the second is backspace/deleting text.

this affects in-game chat, not the menu (not sure where menu sfx are stored)
edit: disregard, working on it now.

disable typing in menu: overwrite \FESfx\ keyerase.wav and softclick.wav with a renamed dummy Worms!.wav (back these up first!), since the game will complain if the files are missing.

the 'KEYCLICK.WAV' in here was misleading me since it isn't used for typing in this environment - that sound is for wormNET lobby (joins/quits).

Download goom's file six times, rename it as "cough1.wav", "cough2.wav",...., "cough6.wav" , replace it all on the folder directory. Problem solved. ;)

\DATA\User\Fanfare\     ; CD audio, use wkFileOverride (unless Steam version)
\DATA\User\Speech\      ; wkFileOverride (same as above)
\DATA\Wav\Effects\      ; NO file needed, can remove/rename existing to mute
\FESfx\                 ; silent.wav file -required- (frontend error)

in CD \DATA\User\ if you use an empty file (same as if you had deleted it in Steam version) it simply won't recognize it as audio, and in some instances will try a fallback WAV. (like in the case of zero length wormNET Worms!.wav, that would default to Simple.wav trumpets being heard - you'd need to override that file too. with my method, the silent Worms!.wav is played and stops there.)

zero length replacement files in \FESfx\ will prevent the menu from opening altogether. it needs a genuine WAV.

Try reinstalling the game.

so yes, Xan, it works... sometimes. when using wkFileOverride i stick to silent WAV just to cover all bases.
attached silent.wav is a more optimized smaller file to use as dummy if you'd like (0.001sec, 200bytes)

you actually don't need placeholders (see:above) in \DATA\Wav\Effects\, in that case i suggest either:

  • move to new subfolder (e.g. \DATA\Wav\Effects\disabled\COUGH1.WAV) or
  • append to extension so the game doesn't recognize (COUGH1.WAV.disabled).
happy coughing! :)
