General discussion / Re: Real time mode in Worms Armageddon?
« on: May 17, 2019, 09:05 AM »
Real-time mode would require significant rewrite I suppose (to support all features), as the underlying architecture was made to work in modem era which didn't allow to synchronize game between players in real-time. Modern games take advantage of high-speed Internet so you see more games shifting towards real-time experience. Some RTS games could still use the technique as in Worms to optimize the sheer amount of data needed to synchronize players. For instance, imagine the case with thousands of units. Both techniques have their pros and cons.

There are two aspects of this: the gameplay and the actual architecture. Turn-based and real-time modes could co-exist just fine if the architecture was made real-time from ground-up as turns could be still processed in real-time, but not the other way around.

Life changes constantly, so do priorities over what to do and not to do. Eventually one has to survive, so they postpone playing games, others live pretty much comfortable lives, so they don't feel like doing anything else but playing games.

If the motivation behind any activity is to escape their own painful feelings and emotions, I call this a waste of time under any circumstance, I don't care what you do.

... Isn't the end result of happiness more important than the source of happiness itself?

Not worth it if the source of happiness comes from hurting people, directly or indirectly, willingly or unwillingly. Although I'm not sure if such happiness is true happiness, I think it would qualify as obsession which brings somewhat similar state of being and oftentimes confused with happiness itself (passion vs obsession).

Like I said before, if they aren't harming you, or others, and they seem happy, don't worry about it  :)

Some of what you say is somewhat contradictive  :o

Can you please update the missing list?

Seems like it's updated automatically.

Nowadays, instead of making history, people make sure it's clear.

No crash for me, the time it takes to generate such map with TheMadCharles' settings is anything around 10-40 seconds.

Looks neat! Do you remake those generators to use this new hexagon based algorithm? I can spot some places where it shows up on the maps.

Looks a lot more like W:A style to me, which is good.  :)

I think Sensei and me want a special type of map for Aerial scheme as he mentions about maps being more spaced so that to allow easy jetpack maneuvering.

Well, that's just a bigger map, you can set any map size you want up to about 8000x8000.

Does MapGEN generate from a random seed internally? I think it would be good to expose it and be able to modify it, that way we can compare how the same map looks with the same aspect ratio but different size, using the same seed for generation.

Maybe just program it to have more open spaces and not so long horizontal lines.. That would probably be it.

I think MapGEN scales maps so they become stretched horizontally... If you try to generate a 696x696 px map, it looks more decent, respecting aspect ratio.

lolicon-guy: I think you underestimate your abilities, and I can relate about perfectionism/motivation part.  :P

I think deadlines shouldn't create any promise, or they shouldn't be called like that. I'd prefer "milestone" term as it clearly defines what has to be done, no matter how much time involved to implement a feature.

When I want to create a deadline, it's only because motivation to continue plummets due to a bad reason. In these cases I remind myself of the very first reason why I'm doing something in the first place.

Lets face it, not all projects are going to be finished, so it's natural to freak out about things like that. But hey, skills don't die, so nothing is wasted.

Mods, shall we set a one-month deadline for final/bronze? Because this can take forever...

We've already played 2 rounds with Walrus (1:1), at most 3 games left to play!
Attaching replays so that they're not lost in Games/ dir:

Cool terrain Xrayez. Can this also be implemented in game like tetris and candy?

Thanks! You mean like using the same objects from tetris/candy themes with this type of terrain? You'd just have to replace relevant /objects from those themes for that:

[attachment=1]

I mean - using this terrain in game as old ones - cheese, snow, old forest..!? (To be able to generate this terrain's maps in game's map editor)

I'm guessing it won't be possible due to higher numbers of colors.. or whatever. Seems like i asked this question already for some other terrain :/

I don't think that's possible... One could replace the theme data with this one in W:A, but that would lead to desync issues, because the other player must have the identical theme installed on his PC, so it's not trivial. That's why MapGEN exists, because the image maps are synced.
