From a F2P perspective it even makes more sense to play the fast decks because it yields more gold per hour. I accelerated my deck quality with long sessions grinding gold on ranked/unranked and the gold per hour ratio was quite good.

This is, in my opinion, the best progression any f2p player can do in HS when starting out.

Play arena (also teaches you the cards) till you can create a Zoolock or Hunter deck, grind gold with it, create other competitive decks to play with. Do whatever you enjoy the most.

then get bored and go back to wow

WoW addon was a disaster, I played until 5/7HC and quit out of boredom around x-mas. Garrison feels like a browser type game and doesn't fit in a MMORPG. Tbh I hope wow dies, it's like W:A nowadays the golden days are gone.

can anyone give me quick pointers as to what cards I should combine with all the various characters?

I have a mage now with gooder spells, but ae, I wanna know what kind of cards I should select with warlock, warrior, shaman, etc.
I tried a murlock spam with druid, but the deck sucks asss.  Are murlocks a no go with druid anyway, or did I pick the wrong cards to go with them?

Depends what kind of hearthstone you want to play. slow, slowish or aggro.
Murlocs need full classic roster and some additional cards to be able to pull anything, but they are bad vs meta decks. Also, if anything, you should try warlock or shaman with them.

Surely some characters learn more towards aggro and others more towards slow.

Nah, all characters can play various styles, maybe except priest.
Anyway, you could post screenshots of your avaible cards or something. Sadly theres no easy way of linking someone to your collection, at least none i know of.

Whats your goal, HHC? Playing for fun or with ambitions to get legendary someday? If first, Murloc decks are fine. Shaman best hero for it, imo. But its also funny with a paladin, f.e. with sword of justice in combo and so on. But for those decks you need a lot of epic and rare cards, some leg is also not that bad. So, if you wanna save time you should play a cheap basic deck like hunter or maybe a mech mage. You will climb up easier and earn some gold to get the entry-ticket to the arena, to get boosters and from time to time, you can craft missing cards with your dust.

So its all up to my entire question. 

And, if you like the game you also can think about buying some boosters. Dont see a problem there because it was free and if you have the money, no worries. It just gives you a nice starter.

As I said SPW, I have a decent mage deck so far. But I get lost trying out other characters. Don't really know what creatures I should look out for then.

Did you already level up all heroes to lvl 10? You easily can do this against the Innkeeper. By reaching lvl 10 you gain some more class cards. That was my way when I started and gives you a feeling for all characters. Its important to know all specific cards from each class. For your mage deck, maybe you could head for a freeze mage, you already have some cards for it. The combo with the doomslayer f.e. is a part of it. Maybe we can talk later, going to work now.
